The best all around hunting caliber, is the best one that`s available in one`s safe or collection for a specific range of game, the terrain and average shooting distances for the kill shots.
Some will say the 25s, others will say the 270s, more will say the 7mms, many more the 30s, the 338s, and even up to and including the 375s.
Good judgement in choosing the right caliber and bullet for a specific job or hunt, should always trump the "what is the best all around caliber" debate.
Even though there are a few calibers capable of giving excellent results on the same game and under the same conditions, the "best all around caliber" is whatever is chosen wisely for a specific hunt.
This is why just about everyone owns more than one rifle.

Caliber would be .3" (fittingly, as between .307" and .376", I think you could find something to do everything).
Agreed, on when's school back in.

I'm not saying it's the best(a very subjective word)but a good old 30-06 wouldn't be a bad choice.

It`s great for the sake of subject matter and speculative purposes to have an "all around caliber" discussion.
Seldom will the majority agree, as we all have our pet calibers and cartridges too.
This type of discussion is like a perpetual "merry go round" where little is accomplished, with the exception of perpetuating further dicussion.
The all around caliber "merry go round" never stops, because it cannot! It just keeps goin around and around and around and around!!!..........I`m gettin dizzy!

IMO, one should be able to buy the best all-around caliber practically everywhere that rifle ammo is sold. It should come in different off-the-shelf loads designed for various types of animals, with a wide range of bullet weights and designs. Basic ammo for deer-size game should be very competitively priced, for the average Joe Hunter. The cartridge must be commonly offered in lots of different rifles and must shoot flat enough for the occasional 300 or 400-yard shot. With the proper bullet in the right place, it should be capable of taking any game on this continent. Oh yeah, it needs to be accurate and have a sane amount of recoil in rifles of reasonable weight.
That cartridge is called the .30-06. I want to hunt all over the world with mine.

Mr. p3dr0; First off welcome to the Campfire from south central BC. The best all around hunting caliber for me is .30! Of course, I might be wrong about that, so I'll keep trying others just in case. Dwayne
