I'm having a rifle completed and the 'smith is suggesting it be coated with "Black T'. Apparently a teflon coating. I've asked about having Cerakote done, since that seems popular on this site, but he isn't familiar with the Cerakote process. Anyone familiar with both that can offer suggestions?

I had a rifle with Black Teflon, and now have a rifle with Cerakote. I like Cerakote better. In my case, my Cerakoted rifle is smoother than by Black Teflon rifle was, though that is not what I would expect.............

Cerakote is great. If you want teflon, do it yourself with KG gunkote, order it from brownells. super easy, and just as good as black T, maybe better.

Check out CAS at riflestockpainting.com,he has Cerakoted several rifles for me and does OUTSTANDING WORK at a very REASONABLE PRICE.Cerakote is what I'm told the NAVY SEALS use on their weapons,so if it's good enough for them,it's good enough for me.CAS is a TOP NOTCH person to do business with,he also paints stocks. He's done several of them for me also.

For Cerakote, and Ultra Bore Coat, and other metal finishes you won't find anyone better than Doug at:

I have had Walter Birdsong coat several of my rifles, a pump action 12ga, Beretta 92FSC and even a Spyderco "Police" folder. Nobody does Teflon coating better than he. Walter does not advertise and there is a reason for that. He doesn't need to. Birdsong refinishes more guns in a month than most do in a year.

CAS is doing the second rifle for me at the present time. The previous job he did for me is great.

CAS is also going a rifle for me right now and has been a pleasure to work with. I can't wait to see the final product.

I've got a Mossberg shotgun that CAS did for me in ceracoat and a Model 700 that was done in Black T by Birdsong. If you'd like I can email pictures.

I like em both - I think they both protect well and look nice. I think that the Black T looks a little nicer and more expensive, but you can't go wrong with either one.

Jeff

BTW - Birdsong has 3 other colors too - Green T, Earth Brown, and Desert Tan.

You OBVIOUSLY haven't had Walter coat a rifle. Gunkote isn't even in the same ballpark as Black T.

People who make those statements just aren't familiar with Walter or the Black-T process.

They have done some rifles for me, and I just got two scopes back from them yesterday. Doug is one of the best to deal with I have ever run across
Great product and a great person to deal with.

I have been in Walter's shop, and have had several rifles done by him. It is the smoothest finish you will find. That being said, I have three times as many rifles done in Cerakote by Doug than I have by Walter. Cerakote is not as smooth or slick as Black T, but it is as tough as anything on the market. If I was not concerned with abrasion resistance and was only concerned with corrosion resistance, I would do Black T. For a hunting rifle, Cerakote gets the nod.

I appreciate the info and suggestions. I'm inclined to go with Cerakote. Partially based on my understanding there is a somewhat lengthy wait to get the Black T done.

Can you do a complete rifle in Cerakote the same way Walter does? I mean a complete disassembly just like Walter does (pins, screws, springs etc.)

This is my Grandson's Mod 600 that I just finished and sent to Charley Santoni. He did the cerrokote and the stock paint.
He has always taken them apart for me.
[Linked Image]You need to remember that a 9yr. old picked out the color scheme. Not my choice, but it is his rifle.

Are you trying to tell me that Charley Santoni breaks down the bolt and coats every component or just coats the outside of the bolt?
