Outlaw - good post.

Before I offer my opinion, a few qualifiers of my opinion: AS - Business Admin, BS - Geology, MS - Geology- hydrology emphasis, State Regulatory Agency - 7 yrs, Private consulting - 3 years, Federal Regulatory Agency - 10 years. I state all that to make a simple point - I didn't fall off the environmental turnip truck yesterday.

The earth has and does go through warming/cooling cycles - search on the "Little Ice Age" for a recent mini-excursion. Clasically trained geoscience folks learn about the carbon cycle in college - and its associated feedback mechanisms - one of which is production of more water vapor, and increased precipitation. Ice cores do show the earth may be heating up a few degrees - so what. This isn't the first time and won't be the last time.

For a real chuckle look up the climate model used for the Kyoto protocol. From memory - I think it showed a 1.8 degree C (4 F) increase in temperature over the next 50 years. The model has a gazzillion parameters - none of which has that kind of mathematical precision. The model is akin to doing brain surgery with a chain saw.

Second - until the rest of the world (r.e. China mainly), gets on board with cap and trade, US efforts won't amount to shiite.

As to the clean water/air/ecosystem BS spewed earlier. Have a gander at the nations stream and air quality in the 2000's compared to the 1970's when the Federal Regulatory Agencies were created. Drive around the Appalachian coalfields and you'll see evidence of past abuse - that many mistakenly believe is occurring today - not. It is a visual legacy of days gone by.

There is lots more to say about this goofiness. Mostly I believe the folks spewing the BS believe in what they say. The difference is they do not know what the hell they're talking about. A classic case of a little knowledge - and extrapolating way beyond the data. They are at best mis-guided, at worst ruining the US.

The probem is two-fold: 1. Industry, in some cases, doesn't help itself by self-regulating. They are in many cases driven solely by profit, 2. The people spewing the earth is falling BS have become entrenched in that position - and won't listen to what science says, in spite of the few "science supporters" backing man-made global warming.

Club for Growth is calling it a massive money transfer program from rural America to the cities.

Quote

Winners & Losers: The bill transfers wealth from rural areas to cities. States like California, Washington, and New Jersey would receive more emission credits than they need, enabling them to sell surplus credits to smaller facilities in states like Ohio that receive maybe half of the credits they need - making the rich, richer, and the poor, poorer.

Quote

Devastates Rural America: According to the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, the monthly residential electricity bills in 25 states will increase 15 to 28 percent for every $20/ton of carbon dioxide allowances. Rural households spend 58% more on fuel than urban residents as a percentage of their income. The Heritage foundation estimates farm income will drop by $50 billion by 2035.

bwinters nailed it.

this is a religious exercise by the true believer Warmist zealots, and a power and money grab by the rest of the democrat/socialist machine

and Mr. Climate doesn't give a damn about any of it, and will do what he will do, just as he always has and will. one little bit of solar activity dwarfs all that Pelosi and her dwarves can do.

Good post. In fact, the world has not yet fully recovered from the Little Ice Age. Prior to the Little Ice Age (between 1150 AD and 1850 AD), England was known for its wine vineyards and sheep were grazing in Greenland, i.e., southern Greenland was actually green. We have a long way to go, in terms of increases in global temps, just to return to what was considered the norm prior to the Little Ice Age.

Obama will bankrupt the coal industry
[Linked Image]

Quote
Let me sort of describe my overall policy.

What I've said is that we would put a cap and trade system in place that is as aggressive, if not more aggressive, than anybody else's out there.

I was the first to call for a 100% auction on the cap and trade system, which means that every unit of carbon or greenhouse gases emitted would be charged to the polluter. That will create a market in which whatever technologies are out there that are being presented, whatever power plants that are being built, that they would have to meet the rigors of that market and the ratcheted down caps that are being placed, imposed every year.

So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it's just that it will bankrupt them because they're going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that's being emitted.

That will also generate billions of dollars that we can invest in solar, wind, biodiesel and other alternative energy approaches.

The only thing I've said with respect to coal, I haven't been some coal booster. What I have said is that for us to take coal off the table as a ideological matter as opposed to saying if technology allows us to use coal in a clean way, we should pursue it.

So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can.

It's just that it will bankrupt them."

B.Hussain Obama, speaking to the San Francisco Chronicle in January 2008.

Not only do the solar cycles, solar flares etc dwarf us all being forced into some death trap hybrid, but volcanic activity super dwarfs any emissions we could possibly create in a man made way. Some vulcanologist claim that the ONE Mt St Helen's eruption was equivalent to DECADES of 100s of millions of SUVs on the road. One NATURAL event.

At the core of all this, I still believe that the wizards behind the curtain have one intention with all this- to take your money and secure more power over our lives, period. The rest of the people are basically cult members and true believers that the wizards are leveraging without their knowledge to scare everyone.

This cap and trade crap is also profound for us from a political perspective. If this bill gets killed, all the calls, all the debate and all the common sense will have prevailed. And it could be seen as THE turning point where America finally drew the line in the sand and said "NO MORE" to Hussein's agenda.

Many conservatives that I know feel quite overwhelmed, powerless, baffled and depressed right now. But momentum is a funny thing. If killing this massive power grab could mark a turning point where the people finally took back some control, that momentum could provide powerful encouragement that feeds on itself and builds more momentum into the 2010 elections.

All we can hope for in 2010 is that enough of Obama's disciples gets fired and we get back to gridlock. Gridlock and getting nothing done is better than the "progress" that they want.

I manage the coal regulatory program in Tennessee. There is a lethal combination of environmental zealots coalescing at the moment. Not only is the cap and trade BS occurring but EPA has found a supporter for 20 years of pent up environmental aggression. If EPA passes their intended TDS standards, the coal industry will not be able to meet the new standard being discussed.

So we have armgeddon for the electric generation community - cap and trade impacting their emmissions, and environmental regulations curtailing coal removal.

Who do you think will pay for that? Does any of the Obama supporters really think these coal companies and electric generators are going to eat the costs associated with meeting both of these new mandates? I'd like to hear from an Obama voter.....................

I think 2 "good" things are happening. First - Obama is moving as fast as he can to get all his agenda items implemented. Note the rush to votes on all major bills - hint # 1. The good thing to become of this is that the impact of his policies will begin to be felt by the next election - at least I pray they are. We can't go 8 years of this BS.

Second - I know of several high powered scientific studies throwing serious doubt at the whole man-made global warming BS. I know 1 was recently released and was buried by EPA in recent weeks. I'm trying to get a look at it but have heard it is serious science and cast serious aspersions to the whole human caused global warming myth.

I think the combination of significantly higher energy rates combined with the rush to policy changes, in addition to better science will show the folly of current policy direction and hopefully spell defeat in 3.5 years. America is being hoodwinked at the moment - if it weren't so, the people voting on these signficant changes would have time to review, have a rational debate, then make an informed decision. At the moment, we're getting party line votes and people making decisions based on future personal benefit. Both of which are gutless and not in the best interest of the country.

Hopefully, the Republicans will find a collective conservative voice and put forward a candidate worthy of the moniker.

If I have to hear that biotch Pelosi say one more time that this is a "jobs" bill, I'm gonna hurl. Beck on Cap and Trade:

Remember, if we don't pass this bill NOW, this will be over your house for eternity:

Hey I wonder if SACharlie or Junior1942 or the rest of the idiots will step in and 'splain" why this bill is a good deal for all of us. jorge
