I'm into short actions now. I have a Howa SS SYN in 7mm WSM that is a very nice "do it all" rifle. I have 3 SYN Howa's and a wood Vanguard in .300 WBY. Three were bought new, and the used blue Howa .300 Win came with a scope. None were over $400. My deer hunter is a lever Sav 99 in .308 Win. Don't overlook those used rifles that aren't made anymore. If you are set on a long range, flat shooting bullet and are willing to train for long range windage and elevation reckoning either the 240 Roy or 25-06 will certainly fill the bill. Ideally that cartridge should be chambered in a rigid platform with a long barrel to maximize velocity, a high comb to accomodate a medium AO scope, and maybe a third swivel stud to accomodate some shooting support. A 240 Roy on a Ruger #1 platform would be a fine prarie/alpine/canyon rig - but that's on the 2K custom wishlist rather than the $600 out-of-the-box list.

Personally, given only those 2 cartridge options I'd go for the 25-06. In either case though, premium bullets will be prudent to assure that velocity is working for rather than against you. That little factoid adds to the already considerable cost of practice needed for long range windage and elevation reckoning and you can probably see that cash outlay for this little backyard mulie rifle could add up in a hurry.

On the + side, 25-06 barrels last longer than overbored 240 Mag. barrels and you can also get away with less barrel length which equates to less weight to pack around. Factory ammo for the 25-06 is also more available than for the 240. Factory ammo for the 25-06 is somewhat cheaper at ~ $35/20 compared to ~$50/20 for the 240 Roy. On the - side, if you do handload there is a better suite of 6mm bullets available than quarter bore bullets - which is not really reflected in factory offerings.

A Weatherby Mark V stock is certainly a suitable platform for either cartridge, the problem is that even doubling your bankroll isn't likely to get you a 240 Roy., unless you happen to find one in hock or at a fire sale. The 25-06 of course is out there on a variety of platforms, including the less expensive Wby. Vanguard line.

If you are really firm on one of those cartridges you can look forwrd to a fairly specialized rifle in your safe. Personally, if this was to be my 1st high powered rifle (or even my 3rd) I'd want a more general cartridge along the lines of 270, 280, 308, or even a 257 Roy. Available on many platforms, any of those could be set up within your means to do most of what a big 240 or 25-06 will and would likely be more useful than either of those if someday you decide to hunt something more exotic than your backyard mulies.

Savage in 30.06 with burris. Bought one for my son, strait shooter will work for any thing+ cheap easy to find ammo.

Or go with the standard Vanguard or Vanguard Stainless and save a few bucks.

The Vanguards are better looking than the Savages, and you get a 24" barrel for your .270.

30-06 in a shorter package.

There is a thread over at the "Hunting Rifles" thas expounds on the virtues of the .308. Compares it to another way to slice baloney, the 7mm - 08.

Those who endure - are enlightened towards the finer points of the .308 as to "distance" and "velocity" as well as well soled for just any topic for polite evening conversation.

Splendid cartridge, the .308 Win. My dad used one for years and piled up many deer and elk.

It is suitable for use in 1,000 yard competitions, is known to be inherently accurate and gives just a touch less than .30-06 velocities with the same size bullets.

The "numbers" may not imperss someone inclined toward speed, but the performance sure will.

Diameter: 0.308"
Common bullet weights: 130 gr. till 180 gr.
Suited powders: N 133, N135
Velocity for 150 gr. TSX from a 22" barrel: around 2650 fps

42 - not to forget. The number of all numbers. 7,5.000.000 million years of calculating. A number, as an answer to what - the ultimate question, which is ...?
