It's rainin'!!! We were on the verge of record drought and temperatures. Since I am off for the Frio River in the morning for a week of tubing with the family, it is just in time.

East Texas and it got up to about 85F today but it also rained 2.5 inches, otherwise it would have been right around 100-101. I'm off tomorrow for MT/WY/CO so maybe it will be cooler.

It was running 96F in the shade when we got home to the south Okanagan in central BC this afternoon at 1:30pm. By about 4:00pm a hot north wind had come up.

We just missed Highway 97 being closed by a forest fire just south of Kelowna. When it's hot like this and windy, the fires spread fast.

The heat and fires are a part of life here in summer that we learn to live with.

The fire is behind Gormann Bros. saw mill, which is on the left as you come up the long hill off the lake and are approaching West Bank. It's right near where the Coqhihalla comes in from the west.

Last I heard it jumped the highway and is on both sides, so the 97 is closed at this time. So far it sounds like at least 4 houses and part of the mill are gone, but it's hard to get a clear picture of the extent of the damage.

Give me a shout either here or by phone on Sunday and I'll try to get you more current update.

Portland, Oregon.

95 yesterday, with low humidity ... thank goodness.

88 today, again low humidity.

Karen and I spread barkdust at our parish this morning. Don't ever remember sweating so much. Too darned hot.

Tomorrow is supposed to be more of the same.

Steve

Mr. Hammerdown;
Thanks, but as this one is 50 miles north of us our family will be OK.

As I said, it's a part of the summer here. In the 25 years we've been here I can recall 8 or 10 "big" fires for which we've been fortunate enough to have only been evacuated once.

Some areas have floods, some hurricanes or twisters, we have fires. It's part of central BC life we've accepted, but thank you for the kind thought.

Thanks again,
Dwayne
