I recommend that we hold it before Memorial Day to avoid the tourist crowd.

Something to be said for that, although Cody can be pretty busy already by then. Will depend somewhat on when the gate to Yellowstone opens. April/early May could still be pretty cold and nasty at times.

Any weekend ought to work for me -- the water is pretty white up there that time of year in the creeks so brookies will be pretty hard to get -- great place for it when the runoff has done runned off though. But I'd like to go when that big gun show is there too anyway.

Hmmm...~750 miles in a straight line, 1274 miles driving according to Google Earth. Maybe time for creative navigation. Never have seen that part of the country before... grin

Cody, May 8 2009

If Cody is elected as the place, I wouldn't recommend April or May. Mid to late June would be better, but bring winter duds anyway. Tourist are a PITA from the end of April until the end of September.

I wsa going to mention that but......I have seen 6 inches of snow here on June 8 before. Where ever we choose we may have to deal with some weather in May.

Barring an unforeseen conflict, I am interested in attending as well. I am good to go about anywhere. But you know that Cody is a touristy pain in the ass during the summer and sometimes it is not an easy place to find a camp spot or hotel. If you dont have a little private ground tied up, folks will probably be scattered all over a pretty busy piece of real estate. CP.

Actually there are two strong candidates. Cody is one and the Glendo/Guernsey area is the other. Both have lots of things to see and do. Both have camping, a reservoir and fishing opportunities. Cody has a real nice range and some prairie dogs East of town. Hunting is allowed at Glendo so we can setup some kind of range there if that's where we end up, but the prairie dog population has been decimated by a recent plague. There won't be as many tourists at Glendo State Park as there will be around Cody. Cody is closer for the Montana guys. Glendo is closer for the Colorado guys.

I prefer the Glendo/Guernsey area because it's a shorter drive for me. But I will go to Cody if the majority of people vote for that option. The vote will be interesting.

Yes that is a real concern. As much as I like Cody we may want to shy away from there if we do this in the summer months.

The only tourists at Glendo and Guernsey usually have green and white license plates ! laugh

Still thinking on the location thing. Wherever we do it, there are plusses and minuses.

Not to toot Cody's horn too much it does have an advantage of making into a family vacation with the trip. You do have to put up with tourists in the summer but with the BBHC, the nite rodeo, short access to Yellowstone, etc there is quite a bit to do and see. It would be a decent drive from CO but also from the outer reaches of MT as well. Roughly halfway between both extents. I would even extend the invite to anyone who wanted to come from various states.

Was also thinking we could line up a trip up past Meeteetse to Kirwin (an old mining town) up in the mountains, or a drive through the beartooths (the later spring earlier summer the better for that). Great drive by the way. Give me some more time and I could think of some various other cool places that most of the tourists don't go to just cause it a one track mind to Yellowstone.
