I've had all 3 at one time or another. I prefer Winchester. The Salvage 99 would be a good gun if it just had an exposed hammer.

I'm thinking you haven't carried a Savage 99 much, if you think they are heavy and bulky. Due to the balance, and actually fairly light weight, they carry very well. Quite slender in an EG, anyways. Model 94 Win., 20" barrel - 7#. Savage 99EG, 24" barrel - 7.5#. Seem pretty close.

7 of the scopeless 99s in that picture weigh 7 pounds or less , none weigh over 7 pounds 8 oz.

But swampy is the same guy that can't make his mind up on barrel length. What do you expect?

Swampy is a Special kind of Guy, so special he wears a helmet when he gets driven to the store to buy more windex from have to clean tongue marks off the short buses windows. I understand they are gonna get him a football helmet with a facemask so his tongue won't reach the windows anymore.

The folks who think 99's are heavy and clunky think that 99's only consist of the 99E and 99C models from the 60's and 70's.

Pick yourself up a nice 1899H or 99H (1950's 99F if you need a scope) and you'll change your mind.

I think the problem comes from people looking at pictures of 99's, and not actually handling them. They do look heavier than they are in the receiver area, due to the slender forearm and barrel. '94's, on the other hand, and most other levers, look more slender due to the mag. tube. Really a matter of proportion. One they handle one in the flesh, those misconceptions disappear.

I think that's why they make different kinds of stuff! To each his own. Can't remember many firearms I really didn't like.

A couple observations:
1. If Savage was the best levergun why didn't Marlin build off their experience of actually building them? Now the first thing someone might answer is that the design was patented, yes however in the world on manufacturing, if you fear, an another companies design you move to top it or at least coral it and limit it by filing your own patents with IP disclosurers. Marlin did not do this (that I know of). Wouldn't a clip instead of a topfill rotary magazine have been a logical extension?
2. Savage stopped making their 99, for lots of reasons; however Marlin is still making their levers.

You know that I like the 1899's as much as any gun and was liking them before some of the readers here were part of this world. I liked them when other gun collectors won't give them a second look. They are a wonderful rifle with many attributes including great function, pointy bullets, and sleek lines. I do like them but I only add here, to qualify them.
