Godogs, as you know I hunted a nearby ranch. My wife arrived on the last day of the hunt and we stayed a few more days on the ranch. She's the complete opposite of an outdoorist and has never been hunting in her life. She fell in love with the area and said I'd be going back every year and she is coming with me. I don't exactly know where the money is coming from but we'll work out the small details later (grin). Can't beat that with a stick!

Three Forks has some 350 bulls. Not a lot of them, but I know of at least one that went down there last year. And I saw one that was in that class, but he was pretty crafty. He got that way by being darn smart. I shot a cow out of his little herd, and had to hike up a mountain to get her.

Roads,

I agree...having the wife with me has made the trip twice as nice, and like you, I have no idea where the $ comes from to support this habit. Does anybody need a good, functining kidney? I have one for sale before my next hunt.

Might look up the Inn of the Mountain Gods in Ruidoso. The "Gold Hunt" in Sept takes several 400's each year. May have a waiting list.

They have some huge bulls it looks like! More expensive than the Vermejo though! Do you know any more info? How are the accommodations? Thanks

A luxury elk hunt for me is having a wall tent available instead of a packtent, so I guess I can't help you any....grin

(wouldn't do it any other way...)

Pretty nice idea though, goodluck it should be a lifelong memory..

Ebby, most hunters stay at the Inn which is a first class resort. After you pay your 20 or so for the bull you can go get it all back at the casino! Now how can ya beat that? smile

Yeah, I told my wife it was up to her to make the trip free! They didn't seem quite that expensive though? I certainly can't do 20k. Thanks for the help.

Sgt, I am with you on the tent/backcountry thing. My idea of a prefect trip as well. I am just trying to balance a hunt for me and keeping the wife happy! Hard thing to accomplish!

Ebby, I am pretty sure that the $13.5 hunt is held AFTER the Gold hunters knock down the big boys. Could be mistaken but I think that is correct.

I talked to them today and they did not mention any other hunts except for that one. I'll call back tomorrow and clarify. They had 92 permits in 2008 and 2009. Apparently 2008 was a bad yr all across NM and 2009 was much better. They averaged 320" in 08 and 350" in 09. That is across the board. I don't need a 400", a 350" will do fine! May not work for me but I am going to look into it. Thanks again.

Go easy on the Emphysema. I only smoke after we double on bucks and at the Long Branch. So much excitement my nerves needed to be calmed down. The smokin is only a once every couple of years thing. Two packs over two weeks and my body starts to get pissed off.
On the hair: It only takes 40 minutes, a full charge on the beard trimmer, and two new razor blades to shave the back and front. When my wife shaves me I am really smooth and sexy.
The training is going well; just not droping the weight. Easy to put on and a bitch to get off!!

I spoke with the Apache at Mescalero again today and they claim that they only have one type of hunt and no tiered system of any kind. May not be true but that's what they said.

I haven't seen the Deseret ranch mentioned. I've hunted for elk there some and it has got to be one of the best. On one great hunt, I saw 16 bull elk in one day, most were 6 points. This year the average bull scored 340 gross B.C. points and change.

$15k to hunt on a ranch like Ted Turner's place...wow. In 2007 I could have pulled off a stunt like that but with the economic slow down my ol' lady would go ballistic....our company is only building one facility this year. After that I am taking the remainder of the year off to enjoy with family and finish my masters.
