My dad recently gave me a Winchester 94 1776-1976 Bi-Centennial that is NIB. He bought it new. I don't have any "safe queens", so the question is wether or not to take it on either a mule deer or cow elk hunt this fall. I usually draw a cow permit about 100mi from home and last year shot my elk on opening day with a 270. Shots are usually less than 100yds so I was thinking about trying out the 94 on at least the first two days. What ya think.. shoot it or not?

Thats what im thinking... Dad would be disappointed if I sold it, so thats not an option. But I think he'd be proud to see it bring home some meat.

well, if selling it is not an option, you have 2 options left - hunt with it or shove it back in the closet (where it sits and never makes a single memory). i say hunt with it.

Yeah, if you can't sell it, then you have to hunt it or at least shoot it.

Since you ain't into safe queens, (good for you!) then I'd recommend making meat at least once with that lever gun. Doing so will make that family heirloom just that much more special.

Do a Waltz Across Texas with it this year; kill every legal Lone Star game animal with it, and all the varmints you can zap, too.

If I can't shoot it I don't want it taking up space in the safe. I'd shoot it because I wouldn't sell a gift.

Just a thought. Get the gun out sometime when your Dad is over and tell him how much it means to you to have something he thought so much of. Then tell him you're thinking about consumating the gift with a memory hunt, something to add even more value to what is already an heirloom. See what he says. That'll matter more than all the opinions here put together. FWIW.

Now that is sound advice!
