I gut my deer where they fall, losing a knife for a bit of time is not uncommon in the fading light and the blood and inards. That orange handled knife is calling my name....

Look at the Helle Harding knife as sold by Discountcutlery.net
Its Norwegian laminated stainless and sells for under 80 bucks. I've been using mine for years and love it. I dont think theres a better all around big game knife on the planet.
Check it out.

We have had good luck with Gerber Hunter fixed blades at around $45. I take the wooden handles off, coat them with about 5 coats of Tru Oil and screw them back on. For the money, very good rigs.

If you are willing to go into the $150 range I just listed a pile of Winston knives in the classifieds. These are great values and you will never regret the extra money once you get one. By the way if you were interested in a multiple purchase I could discount my already low prices even further. RP

Well I think that "GERBER" is one of the very best knives one can purchase off the shelf of your local sporting good store. They certainly do hold and edge and are priced so even a poor man can afford one of them. I gave several away while in Africa and used them myself as well. The price of around $35 to $40 dollars is a very good one for the quality.

^2nd. I don't think you can go wrong with an SV30 Gerber fixed blade. I have a Benchmade folder in SV30 that is absolute junk, worst edge holder and absolutely refuses to take a proper aris, and I know how to get steel shaving sharp, Randalls, Bucks, Gerbers, no problem. Maybe I got a lemon.

Affordable? Let's say around $75.00?
Gerber makes a few knives that I like, their Gator line specifically the fixed blade S30V that Cabelas sells on sale for around that price. Sheaths re IMHO pretty worthless. I don't often carry a fixed blade on my belt but I bought one Kydex sheath for when I do.
The regular Gator is cheaper and is easier to sharpen if he isn't into Diamond stones.
Cheaper? Cabela's has Kershaw AUS8 Antelope hunters for around 14.00 right at the moment. nice sheaths too.

WOW! Lotsa great options here. I'm a Buck fan and would recommend any knife they make from their 420HC stainless steel.
For a good knife w/o breaking the bank, i think Jim62's recommendation is just about right. It looks solid enough and their 420HC and proprietary heat treat makes for a great edge-taking blade.
I'm a 2-carry kinda guy and Buck's Paklite Skinner will be my go-to knife for these types of tasks - and talk about inexpensive/value? Yea, try $15 for one of these awesome little guys!

I like the SV30 buck blades with rubberized handles from the "cabelas alaska series".

I worked on two moose last week between my son and I we have several Buck 110's and some Buck Vanguards. You need both. The 110's have a very sharp point to start a lot of hide cuts like ringing legs, and neck, skinning legs, the Vanguard is plenty good for skinning. Moose hide can be pretty thick and a real job. Nice to use the 110 for poking a hole in the skin so you can get a finger hold to keep pulling as you go. Take something along that you can do a few licks with to bring the edge back to live and you are good to go. Personally we took a DeWalt Sazall with 2 18 Volt batteries. Doesn't take two batteries but just over one. We take most everything out except the legs from the knee down and the middle part of the spine. I'm not interested in getting hit up on wanton waste and they are EXTREMELY picky here.

As a Dealer and a Hunter I've handled and used alot of different knives.
Someone already mentioned the Gerber Gator, in S30V is great but they also have one in ATS-34 that I like, love the handle material on these, very non-slip when you're hand is bloody.
My choice for a fixed in your price range would be the Spyderco Billl Moran. Amazing value in top notch materials.
