John has been a Jack of All Trades I think. He was active in the Rhodesian Bush War even though he is South African. At one time he was part owner of the Hardrock Cafe in Capetown but pretty much all he does is hunt where he manages to keep quite busy. PRetty good pilot too. And yes he has lots of stories to tell. When I hunted with him down in the Lowveldt it was a history lesson of the Bush war. Fascinating. jorge
As far as comparing, a 340 with a 250gr TSX@ 2900 plus can do about anything a 375 can do.
and vice versa.

Without having looked at ballistics charts, I would imagine that a .375 H&H bullet that can reach 2900fps is not gonna have a very good BC. So maybe the .375 is not as good at long range?

I've not even seen one of the new 285 TSX's but I'd sure love to run some thru my .340. 4 some reason or another I think it really levels the old 340 vs 375 playing field...grin

The flag being flown upside down is typically done when a military unit is in distress. With The Messiah screwing the country up from the White House, And Queen Nancy and Harry Reed and their bands of idiots screwing the country from Congress, it seems pretty appropriate.

I don't have a .340 but I'll bet it does kick azz on both ends.

Agreed on the flag. Mine are folded us in the closet and won't see the light of day until Osama is back in Kenya enjoying his retirement.
Sorry to hijack -- carry on.

I'll take that explanation.

I have never owned one, but spent a rather unpleasant afternoon getting one sighted in with/for a friend who was kind of afraid of his own rifle....never a good thing. It was a stainless synthetic weatherby, not very heavy, no brake....had the stiffest, sharpest, fastest recoil of any rifle I've ever fired.

I own and shoot .338 WM, .375, and .450/.400.....none of them hold a candle to that .340 in pure nastiness. Maybe it was bad stock fit or the rifle was too light or whatever, but after about a box and a half I was mighty glad to call it good.

the effect on the target's end is a lot worse, of course, and it is like my .338 on steroids.

I have a 340 Accumark and I can't be happier, it's been a very lucky rifle for me. it is extremely accurate with 200 grain bullets thru 250 grains bullets. I have a Wby break on mine which is loud but it tames the recoil. I shoot it with or without the break and it not unbearable. I think that the stock has a lot to do with it. The 340 Wby seems like it shoots for ever, thats a long ways. I have a 416 Rem Mag Win 70 that really slapps me silly, talk about recoil.

Redneck,,,,I too have been mulling the .340Wtby. for some time. Did zero a friends some yrs. back and it was quite tolerable as recoil goes..surprised. But, a 300 grn. for long range shooting I hear/read comes in close to the Lapua and components are cheaper than the Lapua. That would be the reason for me to own this Wthby. caliber. I "want" a long ranger and understand this caliber would be ideal.

I've 4 .33's and am getting another .338 win mag built on a J.C.Higgins soon and think it is the perfect caliber. It would be "cool" to have the Weatherby to do just that.....get them down range with a 300SMK @ 2700fps.

I have a Sako M995 chambered in the 340wby that I put a Vias brake on a couple of years ago. Really tamed the gun down a ton and I'd swear it's actually quieter now too, but maybe my hearing is just getting worse! Anyway it's been a great gun for hunting Elk and has become my goto weapon of choice. Of course your going to want to reload yourself & I like the TSX's but so does my gun!

I don't have a 340 Wby but I do have a 338 RUM that I've put a couple hundred rounds through. It is a Rem 700 that I had ported before I ever pulled the trigger. I'm shooting the 225 gr Accubond at 3050 fps which basically duplicates what the 340 Roy would do. Recoil is not unpleasant at all, certainly no more than a 30-06 and no muzzle jump at all thanks to the porting. I'd have a hard time picking a better all around type round than the 340 wby/388 RUM.
