Montucky 7 WSM. Because I can bring my ammo with me and don't need to worry about "buying factory ammo in the corner mom and pop gas station/grocery"...

OK, here's the hypothetical. You are going to be transported back in time to the year 1800 (could happen). You can take one rifle with you. You don't know where you are going though. Someplace in the lower 48 or Alaska. You will need the rifle to get food and defend yourself against animals (we'll assume you are the only human being on earth). You might end up in antelope country, bear country, pheasant country, mountain country, anything.
Without explanation as to why or what rifle, simply state the caliber of rifle you will take. (You will only have as much ammo as you can carry--so if you're real strong you have an advantage).
Remember NO explaining. Just list the caliber. We all know that a .3xx can shoot bullets ranging from 1xx grain to 2xx grain and yadda yadda yadda. (Assume any ammo you want is available in quantity). Don't want to hear why the types of rifles available affect your decision. What caliber is the only question.
Here goes my answer:
.338 Win Mag Plus one Waders. Old thread!!
The CENTER will hold.

Theres a lot of cartridges that would be fine for me, I'll choose the 7rem mag. I just browsed the other posts, not reading all of them completely. Wade. Has enough time passed yet for us to explain the why we chose whqat we did and write about the rifles yet?

I am assuming that means I will only have the ammo I take with me, with no chance of obtaining more ammo or materials to make more ammo.
I am talking a round I can use in both a pisol and long gun. It's 1800, so I don't need any long distance capablity when shooting and I want something for close in work against a bear or wolves if I am attacked.
9mm, 44-40 or such. Whatever allows me to carry the mostest shots.

Nice to see a 10yr old thread dusted off. Great way to ring in the new year Jim. Lets see, Since this is a "time machine" scenario in the 1800s, go ahead and make it 1836. I've gotta live out my long time fantasy of fighting at the Alamo with a modern rifle. Make mine a .223/5.56 with how ever many cases of ammo I can fit in the trunk of my Delorean.

BTW, I realize I hijacked a Big Game fantasy thread, but I've had the Alamo itch since I was a little kid.

I think i would rather have a suit-case full of antibiotics and just use a muzzle loader from the era.
