Usually if there is an elephant attached to the other end, it is authenticated as "real ivory".

Dunno anything about ivory, but if you put pearls in vinegar the fake ones won't dissolve.

Hmm. Is that a fact about the vinegar? Interesting, if so. WRT pearls, a basic check is to put them between teeth. A pearl will feel gritty like sand against tooth, not smooth.

My sweet little old Mommy, church lady and all, used to stuff a bar of soap in my mouth and make me stand in the corner for an hour. Irish Spring was the worst in our house. I would hope for Ivory. You could almost bite off a piece of Ivory and chew on it to pass the time.

If thats 40 year old ivory I'll eat your hat, there isn't any aging show to the ivory, I have some brought back in the 60's and it has a very nice yellowing to it and some slight cracking

I've seen the black light used before to verify real ivory on older grand pianos, Steinways and similar, to verify if the key caps were still original. Most have some significant yellowing, especially if room placement gave the instrument exposure to the sun.

On the other note, real Ivory floats. It's the camper's favorite, and much easier on the palate, if caught using profanity.

Thanks, folks! OH, and BTW, STX, I think you win. Lowland tapir. Endangered. Looks like it'd taste like pork. wink

I do not know about other Ivory's but Elephant Ivory has a cross hatch striped look to it (light and a little darker stripes) as you hold it up to the light and move it the stripes can be very subtle. and if it has been exposed to sun light it turns kind of yellow and has an aged look to it
