Hey all, I was wondering about putting a takeoff .243 barrel on my LA 700. it's the standard matte ADL. I'm not worried about getting the most out of the action length, just wondering if the short shell would feed right, and if there would be issues with them shifting around in the magazine due to too much room. I suppose i could try feeding some of my brothers shells through the gun (in .270 right now), but i don't have any with me right now. Thanks for any help.

It would be helpful if you try to use long pointed bullets like VLDs. As for feeding you will just have to try it and see.

I'd be tempted to punch it 6-06.

It might feed but probably not smooth. You'll also need a SA follower and figure out some way to plug the magazine to keep your rounds in place.

I hate to say this but IMHO when it's finished you'll have a cobbled together rifle that's worth no more than what the price of an action will draw (maybe even less) and it probably won't function 100%. You'd be miles ahead and have a lot less trouble on your hands by just taking your rifle to a pawn shop and trading it in on a .243 winchester if that's what you want.

The 6MM-06 ain't a bad idea though.

I put a 260 Rem take off VLS barrel on a 700 ADL/ LA for a while..

there were no feeding problems at all on that rig..

I left it as a 260, until I pulled the barrel off and replaced it with a 6mm Rem barrel with a one in 7 twist from Pac Nor.

Going with a LA for a 6mm, I'd be tempted to do a 6mmRemAI, throated for 115VLDs, or a 6-06.

A .243 takeoff barrel, just wouldn't horn me up, unless it was a 26" VLS type tube, and the likely punch and throat was in order.

Just finished that very rifle in long action. .243, LONG ACTION Remington, Single Shot Follower....takes away the feeding worries. Barreled with Krieger 8 twist for the 105 Berger VLDs.

So answer me this, why would a 243 in a long action not feed when a 308 will? The 700 based military sniper rifle is a 308 built on a long action.

A 6mm-06 reamer will not clean up a 243 chamber.

A 6mm-06AI would as would a 6mm Rem AI.

Well, for starters we aren't talking about building a M24 sniper system here. He wants to take a factory pulled .243 barrel (1st clue he wants to do this on the cheap) and screw it on a long action and go shooting. There is quite a bit of difference in a M24 sniper rifle and a "Hey, will this work" scenario. You can make anything work if you throw enough money/work into it. My guess would be that's not what he has in mind, hence my 1st reply. At a bare minimum a new follower and magazine block would be highly recommended. You don't think the army just takes a Remington 700 long action, screws a .308 barrel on it and calls it good to go do you? laugh HA! I didn't think so either.

TC1, In other words, you haven't a clue, but that won't keep you from spouting off.

I have done several short action rounds on long actions, but always for seating bullets long. Never had a feeding problem, but the long seated bullets may be assisting with the feeding. Never had to change a follower.

I have had to modify feed rails and followers doing WSMs on long actions

No need to act like a dickhead here. I'm sure it comes natural for you but you should really try to refrain. I answered your question and yes I do have a clue.

It will feed fine. Just like any short round, scoot it all the way back in the mag when you load it.

TC1, I'm sure you are more capable of recognizing a dickhead then I. I prefer women, but to each his own.

You Walter Mitty types amaze me. But then again, I may be wrong in thinking you a Walter Mitty. The other possibility is that you are one of those who can't, and so you rest in your armchair and tell those who can that something cannot be done.

You started the wiseazz behavior, man up or fug off, I don't care which.

Ok, explain to me how I hurt your feelers. Maybe I did something wrong here and I just don't see it.

I will take Terry's words and opinions well over yours.

I believe, they have your photo on the program for the International Dickhead's symposium!

Quite a bit of setback would be required for a 6mm-06 to clean up a 243 chamber. Something on the order of ~.500" if my trig is correct. To be safe 8 turns. (I'd like to see Mathman do the calculations though)
The 243 measures .454" at 1.5598" and the 6mm-06 measures .441" at 1.9480" and both measure .471" just ahead of the extractor groove.

Thanks for all the replies. Trading in the rifle is not an option, I don't have the money for a new rifle, but would like something smaller than a .270. I'll just wait until I feed some through it and see what happens. If the 6mm would feed better, i'd be most likely to go that route. does anybody have a good idea of what it'd cost for a decent takeoff barrel, then to have a smith rechamber for 6mm? thanks again
