My NULA that I just purchased is in .30-06. I was going to order a .270 Win, but Melvin already had this 06' built just like I wanted it, so I bought it to kill the 5 month build time.

I'm wondering if I did rebarrel to a .270 if I would be able to sell the .30-06 barrel to help ofset the cost of the rebarrel. I believe Melvin said he usually charges $550-$600 to change barrels.

I've always had a love affair with the idea of a 130gr. Partition at 3,100 fps. for deer hunting. I would imagine that I would get a SMALL reduction in recoil from my 165gr. 06' loads, although the recoil is very manageable now.

Also, I bought a Leupy VX-3 3.5-10x40 for the rifle. After getting everything together, I'm thinking I might should have gone with the VX-3 2.5-8x36. The rifle is so trim, the current scope seems a TAD to big for it.

Well, I've opened myself up to all kinds of flaming....so go ahead folks...tell me what you think.

1. How easy would it be to sell the 06' barrel (#2 @ 24")

and

2. Do you think the 2.5-8 would fit the rifle better than the 3.5-10?

You know how it goes....tax money about to come in...mind begins to wander....wife says I'm stupid....the usual.

#1....Don't think you'd get much for a used 30-06 Douglas barrel. Does Melvin send them back after re-barreling?

#2....Stick with the 3.5-10x if that's what you already have. Not much more weight and works great with a long action. The 2.5-8x is my personal preference....but I wouldn't kick a 3.5-10x out of bed!

Good grief. You drop big bucks on a Nula and start changing it already? Frigging run some 130 tsx in it or run some Berger VLD in it, do anything but start dicking with it already. And the 3.5-10 is picture perfect on it. Your market for a used 30-06 barrel is gonna suck.

Use your tax money for a hunting trip or something for your wife. Or paying off your mortgage if it isn't already. There, that should be enough flame.

+1

It's just loony fever. Take some Tylenol and give it a week or so to run its course. Just have fun playing with the '06. With all the new powders and bullets, there are bunches of options and new frontiers to keep you challenged... smile

What about another NULA in 270. Or a Kimber Montana in 270Win & keep the NULA as is(30-06).

I have a 2.5-8x36 on my 24. IMO the 40's are too big & long.....36mm is were it ends on UL rifles for me.....

There is an old saying we have all heard " if it is not broke, don't fix it" I would keep the 06 and like some others above...play with some other loads etc. under normal hunting ranges with a light rifle like that the difference between a 130 .270 and the 150 - 165 06 is minimal . You really have a great gun now, and made. Great decision when you bought it. Good luck with whatever you do.......goodshot.

You'll have no problemo selling the scope here on the classifieds.

If the scope is Matte, p.m. me first before you list it. blush

Don't write off the VX11 2-7x33 either. Bigger eye-box, more eye relief, less critical eye relief, lighter & bigger front tube space than the 2.5. But the former is a gem!

Sell it. It's essentially new, perhaps it may not hurt all that much.

For a NULA I think I'd want the smaller 2.5-8x36.

As for the rebarrel or not, I don't think I'd do it but in the end YOU are the only one you need to make happy.

Schoolcraft,
I'll trade you a VXIII 2.5-8x36 and some cash for that VX3 3.5-10x40. Somebody here told me it would be perfect for my 223AI...

Keep the '06 the way it is and order a 243, 257 or 260 NULA.
