I coated my Montana with Dyna-Gun Shield. Hoping between that, the stainless and some Eezox on the bolt it's reasonably immune to the environment.

I WON'T be selling my 84L Big Sky to buy a 24B
and neither my Ti's.
Mel Forbes will laughing all the way to the bank with 24B profits.
You could re-trigger a used Colt Light Rifle and come out ahead by 50 to 60% less money spent.

dont see how you would be ahead by re triggering a colt when you get a kevlar stock on the 24b rifle

Then restock the CLR and still come out ahead. You'll also get a Douglas barrel instead of the Shaw.

The CLR's did not have Douglas barrels, and the barrels they did have weren't all that hot. They shot reasonably well because of all the other positives in the rifle's design.
In my experience the Shaw barrels of the past decade (since they retooled) are very comparable to Douglas.

I've never had a Douglas, but I've had 3 Shaw barrels and they shot great.
** Chris Bozzi at Forbes Rifles replied to my email today about the Forbes Rifle barrel... "The barrel contour is *similar* to a #2, and will mic at 0.615" at the muzzle."
Personally, that makes it a real winner to me... a rifle as light as a Kimber 84L but with a no.2 contour and arguably the best synthetic rifle stock made.
I could care less if it's chromoly, though I personally think they should put a SS barrel on. I'm still no fan of the M700 slotted safety, but it's not the end of the world either.

i think you would be money ahead with a forbes rifle compared to a colt after you made all the upgrades colt rifle upgrades to include new trigger new barrel new stock

Thanks for clarifying that. It was my misunderstanding that they were.
btw, what barrel did the CLR's have? Because many here at the Fire reported that their CLR's actually shot better than the ULA's they owned.

Brad,
I would rather re-stock the 84L with a McEdge.
You would have a better rifle all around.

I can see no reason whatsoever to restock a Montana, YMMV.

If something happened and I needed a new stock for my Montana I'd be calling Kimber, period. Great stock.

Montana stocks certainly are rugged precision made stocks. The 84L Montana feels nicer inhand & on the shoulder than the 84M(M a bit too small for me) to me, but I still think the WSM Montana series is numero uno as far as stock dimensions go..... As that is a closer copy of Melvins 24, with it's thicker pistolgrip & forend. But nothing is perfect

Kimber should have 2 stocks for the M & L.........meaning a WSM size stock. But I guess that where Melvin 24's & Forbes 24B take charge.....

all i can say is i was in Melvins shop and there was a 84m rifle there and he stated that he was helping them out with a few things on it and this was before they were on the market. I will say it was a wood stocked version and had heard Melvin had helped them with getting their stock program up and running.

I would like to see a slight palmswell on the Montana's too......Mel's design here with it's more pronounced sweeping grip has no peers in synthetic stocks, for me.

Just comparing the 'castoff' on the 84L & NULA24. No wonder Mel's rifles tame recoil, as does the 84's. But according to the laws of stockbuilding I would say Mel has this one nailed with that cast PS-But on that note. Everyone is different.........
