I'd put a 6x42 on it.

The 280 Remington is overbore.

The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

I've got both Z3 3-9x36 and 3-10x42 and prefer the Leupold......for not much reason other than cost and just because. I got my Z3's when LL Bean had them for 33% off the anniversary price.....or I'd not have them.

Swarovski Z3 3-9x36
Swarovski Z3 3-10x42
Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40
Zeiss Conquest 3.5-10x44
Leupold vx3 3.5-10x40 (thoughts on CDS?)
Leupold vx3 2.5-8x36
Minox?
Leica ER?

Swaro's have great glass but only 3.5" er. Zeiss appears to be the best value just a little on the heavy side. I have used Leupold scopes for years without complaint and are my standard for comparisons.

Looking to see what nula owners have put on their rifles and would recommend.

Closest thing I have to that gun is a .300 Win Mag, Ed Brown Damara. This one now wears a Z3 4-12x50 BT with Outdoorsmans turret, set up for 180 gr. NBT and NAB's at 3,050 fps with RL-22. Very accurate and light weight.

One photo also showing Browning BPCR in .45-70 with VX-3 3.5-10x40 CDS.

Hey Dirt....how much adjustment do you have in that Z3? Total, and per revolution. Thanks.

I zero'ed at 100 and IIRC, it will go up to around 550 yds. with the one turn. I could have zero'ed at 200 and probably gotten more range, but this set up does all I need it to do.

I wouldn't be too quick to put a leaf spring Swaro on a lightweight 300 magnum.

I'd go with a 6x Leupold of some sort. The first NULA I ever had (a loaner for a year) was a .300 Winchester M28 with a 24" #2 barrel. It shot great but was hard on scopes!

Haven't shot it enough to mess it up... laugh

Have too many other rifles.

Ed Brown put a brake on all his Damara Magnums. He claimed they were more accurate with the brake. I shot this one with and without. The brake stays. I write in the past tense, as Ed quit making rifles, to concentrate on pistols.

So, it doesn't kick much more than a similar weight .308 Win. Kimber Classic shooting 150 gr. bullets. Maybe it won't trash the Swaro Z3, at least for a while. Swaro CS is great, anyway.

That is the same gun that I have on order. Sounds like I better stick with a leupold. Any reason for a 6x over 3.5-10 or just personel preference? Thanks

I've got older VXIII's (3.5-10x40) on my 270 WSM & 300 WSM ULA's and have no complaints. Lighter, better looking, & more eye relief than most other scopes. Have also used my 4.5-14 Zeiss on the 270 on occasion; mainly because of these "old" eyes!

You guys keep talking about 6x Leupolds until I'll have to get a FX-3, 6x42. Must be a pretty good scope by all the good reports from a number of shooters I respect.

Yeah, a bit less likely to break when you are mixing a lightweight rifle chambered to a "relatively" hard recoiling rifle.Fixed power is simpler, fewer moving parts to quit, and especially if you shoot a lot.

As has been said, the 6x42 is a terrific scope on most any rig, especially a light weight, hard kicker.

Plus, for some reason, it seems brighter, sharper and clearer to my eyes than most variables of similar quality at the same setting.

Additionally, it seems 6x42 is just about perfect in terms of magnification and objective size.

If fixed will work, it's a great choice.

I read the post's title, and immediately thought "Leupold 6X42". Matte with LR reticle.

And I wouldn't be averse to putting an M1 elevation turret on it.

+1. The 6x36 with dots has become my favorite for light rifles and actually most hunting rifles anymore. Its tough and at around 10oz it is perfect on a trim rifle.

I went with a Swaro Z5 3.5-18 on my ULA 7RM. I like to have the extra mag if I need it. We can only shoot bull elk that are 3 point or better and those three inch eyeguards can be tough to see across a canyon. And, 3.5 is plenty low on the bottom end for me, and its less than 16 ounces. I like it more than my Leica 3.5-14, but they're close.
I've never had an issue with eye relief.

That is a very nice scope. Its weight was too close to the 5-25X52 for me to go with it over the larger z5.

A friend of mine uses a 6 /12-20X on his elk rifle. He has set two world records at 200 yards with a slug gun so he has the basics of shooting down pat.

He shot a five point bull across a canyon as it came into a very small clearing. It turned around and went right back toward the direction from which it came. He heard a voice from further up the hill say,
"Good thing you missed it. It is only a three point."
"What scope are you using?" Cliff asked.
"I have a 3 to 9 power Leupold," he proudly informed.

About that time the bull staggered out into the small clearing and fell where they could take a very good look at it. It still looked like a three point to the guy limited by his 9X. When he had a chance to take a closer look he discovered it was a five point. I don't remember the last time he killed something under 500 yards.

Personally, I'd not see much use for a turret or dotz on a magnum to 400 yards.

A standard Leupy duplex in the 6x makes it pretty easy to estimate what's going on out to 400.
