X2. And with the popularity of the .300WSM these days I'm willing to bet that most place that stock .30-06 probably have .300WSM as well.

I wouldn't count on that....Was just at a store today and checked. They had a lot of 06, some 300 win mag, and others like 308, 243....but no wizzum.....

i too have owned and killed a few animals with a 300wsm. mine killed elk and deer just fine, but i couldn't tell any difference between the 300wsm (using 180gr bullets) and my 30-06 (also using 180gr bullets), so i sold the wsm and returned to the 06'. when i lived in alaska i killed all my moose, caribou, and black bears with a 270 win, so the 06' is more than capable, as would be the 300wsm. bottom line - 270/06'/300wsm all work, so the question is which brand of rifle do you prefer?

grin....I say these things to mess with BobinNH.....He's a good guy to talk to and loves the 270......He sees these threads but doesn't get involved. Just like ingwe hates when you start messing with his beloved 7x57 and pushfeed model 70's... grin. Now, I thought we were talking 300wsm????

I have a 300 WSM Model-70 that I've taken to Africa twice hunting with JJHack. I shoot 200g Nosler partitions and it has been a marvelous plains game round. I took wildebeest, kudu, impala, waterbuck, nyala, jackal, zebra, blesbok, and various other smaller critters and they all seem dead and on the wall of my home. I've hunted Africa with a 30.06 with the same results. Could probably do it with a 22-250. 300WSM is a fine round.

Haven't killed a thing with a 300WSM despite loading for 3-4 of them......OTOH I have killed plenty with the 30/06 and the 300 Win Mag....we all know they work so it's unlikely something stuck square in the middle between those two, wouldn't....is that' deductive reasoning? grin

I don't know what a guy can't manage with a 180 gr 30 caliber bullet at 3000 fps......easy to load, accurate,tolerable recoil,and proven ballistics on about any soft-skinned game.

What's not to like? smile I wouldn't hesitate to take it to Alaska.

BTW,ignore the 270 comments by the kids above. grin

I bought a Kimber Montana in 300 WSM and really like it. It is very accurate with either 180 gr Barnes TTSX or 180 gr Nosler Partitions, and you could hunt with either without adjusting the scope.

I booked an Alaskan Brown Bear hunt at Afognak Island for the spring of 2014 (all of 2013 is already booked) and the Randall bros. told me that they use the 300 WSMs. If it works for them, it should work for me, and that's for brown bears!

Get what you feel comfortable with and go for it.

A 180 at 2,950 - 3,000 is a lot of rifle.

Been using the 300 WSM since it appeared over 10 years ago. Have taken antelope, deer and elk with it. Its recoil is relatively mild for what it is. Really, a nicely balanced round. Get it in an M70.

Load a 180 Partition and go hunt.

Thanks for the words of experience regarding this wonderful cartridge....I know it seems like I'm trying to steer the op away from it but I was just trying to bring up some points to consider. Like I said, I have 2 and love them. I've only taken one buck with mine since I'm a newbie to the cartridge but so far it is everything Brad said it was and yes mine are built on win model 70 CRF actions....I'm a long time user of the 06 and feel that the wizzum is basically an o6 on steroids or its fat cousin so to speak......Love them both but still believe if you want to shoot a lot it's more of a handloaders cartridge since ammo is quite a bit more than most other 30 cal's.....
