I thought the reasoning was so they could make a 45/70 magnum performance/like factory loads that could not go into older weaker actions, ie trapdoors etc.
That is why they made it and I guess that's an advantage in that while a hot loaded 45-70 could be loaded into a Trapdoor the .450M couldn't. I don't think there is a performance advantage however.

Hope not as I bought a Beretta with tip-up barrel a few weeks ago. Carries very nicely. Wish it was a .32 or .380, but for $149.99 for a pristine Italian 950-B Beretta with original box I wasn't going to complain.

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.
A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.

just curious as to whether there is an advantage (claimed, or discovered later) in the .450 marlin over the 45/70.
dunno about worthless, but i personally never found a use for the .308 marlin express, .338Marlin Express, or .30TC.
Just hotter in Lever action. That is all Snake

Well I suppose a 30-06 has some value if you can only have one rifle. But if you can have 2 then the 30-06 is wurfliss.
A .270 Win and a .300 win mag is better than a 30-06 alone. ;-).

That's not worthless, it's a reason to buy a new gun!

I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Think a 6.5 Rem Mag might top many lists. My 6.5Rem Mag pushing 120BTs at 3300 might beg to differ! :)Although it does help that I have 350 pieces of new brass. Monashee

OK, it makes sense in the BLR, but it would really have come into its own if someone had ever made a factory bolt action for it - you could have sold it as the 458 short magnum. And the ammunition to make the most of it. The problem with the cartridge was that of all the people to commercialise the 458x2 American, it was Marlin. And worse, they put it in a weak rear-locking lever action. Put it in a frontlocking lever like the BLR, or a bolt gun, and it is suddenly a whole lot more appealing than the 45/70. It is a genuine DGR. In the Marlin lever gun, it is a complete waste of time.

And i'll vote for the 6.5mm Creedmore or .30 T/C as the most pointless cartridges of recent times.

The 257 Weatherby is kinda useless. It's performance over the 25-06 hardly justifies the rather large, increased amount of powder used.
The other thing I don't like about the 257 Weatherby is that I keep wanting one. I've got 3 257 Bobs and 2 25-06s. What the heck do I need a WeeBee for!!?? That alone chaps my ornery hide and makes it worthless!
