Mauser G33/40 30-06 Douglas featherweight barrel 21" long Blind magazine, Sunny Hill trigger guard Talley bolt Rust blued S&K scope mounts Dakota safety Timney trigger Nikon 2x7, the Leupold 4x it normally wears is at Leupold for repairs Weighs 7lbs with scope Very nice, fine wood grain. Do you prefer rust blued over satin hot-tanked? I can't decide which way to go on my next custom. Enjoy.

Thanks for the kind remarks, I preffer the rust blue because it has depth that hot blue cant match. They say its much more durable than hot blue? In 20 years I will let you know! This rifle is meant to be usad and thats what I intend to do. Safe queens are worthless to me. To reach 7lbs total weight I used a featherweight Douglas and Cut the magazine box from the military bottom and fabricated a sheet metal bottom for the mag box. The S&K mounts are very light, my goal was to make the lightest all steel and wood Mauser possible. I also picked the blank for light weight, every ounce adds up.

Hey Ed, Do you have any close up pics of your Erfurt Mauser? That looks like a fine classic rifle.

Have drilled & sanded mag box for a little. Intended to use a little epoxy for a border to keep the spring from wandering (synthetic stock) but worked out ok. It is a shame one can no longer buy Gentry mounts for the small ring--they went with Dave, I guess. Agree on queens, they do look good in museums.
Would you tell me a little about the stock, did you shape it or use a pattern? Pad? What was your finished stock weight?
Thanks, tom

Tomk, I cant remember exactly what the finished stock weights? I do remember it was under 2lbs. I did hollow out under the barrel channel and cored out the buttstock. I made a pattern stock from a laminate that I got from Boyds, the laminates make great patterns because its easy to keep your lines straight with the laminate layers.
Then I went thru a huge pile of blanks at Ed Presliks in Chico,Ca., looking for the right combination of grain and weight.
Then I sent the blank and pattern to Dennis Olson, in Plains,Mt., and he turned the blank for me. The pad is a red deccelerator. Tim-Smith Lyons does my checkering. Dave at I,T&D fitted the barrel.
I highly recommend all these guys they do great work with short turn-arounds, and are fairly priced.
Edm, I will get some more pics for you later today, I am heading up the Mtn. to do some long range shooting.

Thanks.
Imagine with Lupy 4x it would put your finished stock in the neighborhood of 1 3/4#.
do have an "extra" g33 action...good to know 7# can be done w/ great looking wood...:)

EdM, Thats a fine little Mauser you have. Its great to see a pic of it out in the field doing what it was built to do! No safe queen there! Dont underestimate no-name builders, hell mine was put together in a garage with files and sandpaper by a guy who goes by fubar! ha ha

Tomk, I was careful in the wood selection to get that weight, the downside is it turned out to be relatively soft for english walnut. My checker had a hard time with it and it seems more prone to scratches and dents than my other sticks of english.
There is a guy in Ausralia, named Roger Vardy that grades his blanks by weight as well as figure, he has a web site and is worth checking out. Otherwise I recommend picking your blank by hand.
