I am running the 150 gr ttsx in a 30-06 between 2950-3k fps, would you feel this is enough for elk inside of 300yrds? Even though the barnes should give better penetration, is the bullet too light in your opinion?

That's the bullet I'd use....and in the 308 too.

Lots of things have been killed by 150 grain bullets out of the 30-06. This one should work.

Will work fine vabowhntr; just practice with your load and be sure of what distance you can place your shot properly and it will work out fine.

Getting the exact same velocity range in my 308 win using that bullet with 2000MR. Excellent groups as well. When I take this 308 elk hunting, that will be the load of choice.

Thanks guys, I am setting up this load for a friend who didn't think the 150 gr was the right choice. Someone told him he needed 180s or 220s for elk. His gun shoots them better than the heavier bullets, and I was sure the 150s would do the job at those speeds out to three hundred. As little as he gets to shoot, he shouldn't shoot farther anyway.

I would use it in a heartbeat. I would also have no problem using the 130gr barnes as well.

From my experiences using the 150gr X, XLC, TSX and now TTSX out of the .30-06, I have no doubt this combo will kill any Elk on the planet. Good luck!

Inside of 300 yards why not just use a plain old rn bullet or a partition of 180-200 grains and sight your rifle in for 200 yards. this can't be all that hard.

Cause the TTSX is actually dependable, accurate, and hits like lightning.

have you shot big animals with a nosler partition? at moderate velocities they are utterly dependable and in 30 06, inside 300 yards would be a fine choice. my point was I don't see the advaantage of using a long range bullet at the distances you estimate and a rn hits a lot harder than a spitzer as far as my own experience has demonstrated.

I killed AK/Yukon moose/40yards, caribou/405years, mule deer/125yards, and dall sheep/250yards with a 30-06 and the 168 TTSX running 2930 last season. All of them died quick. The 150 TTSX will out penetrate anything out there. People telling him to shoot 180-220 grain bullets have never shot anyting with a barnes tsx/ttsx.

Thread hijack in progress. Mississippi, what load did you use in your '06 to get that speed? I bought a box of 168 ttsx this week.

+1 what load?

Let's hear some 150 TTSX loads while we're at it. I have partially worked up with RS Big Game, but need to confirm things when I find time to hit the range.

that's true, i've never shot anything with a barnes because NPs work for me. my point was what is the point when a 180-200 np will do the trick. in other words, what exactly is being gained by the use of this bullet?

just curious to the mindset here.
