If you are recoil shy, get the 25-06 or stick with the 7mm-08. If you want to step up, get the 7Mag. Acually that 7Mag won't bite back any more than your 06. Any of the guns that you mention will get it done but if you just want to buy something new then go big or stay home. You can always load the 7 down if you so desire. I see that you only have one post. If you stick around here long enough you will be convinced that all you need is a 223 with Barnes bullets or you are stupid and don't know chit. Next will be a 22 Hornet or a BB gun with solid copper BB's of course.

They are two dissimilar cartridges.

For Texas, I'd think I'd be good-to-go with your 7MM-08 Rem.

The answer is quite simple, get the 25-06. This is truly a high performance cartridge that will do many things.

As far as buying a 7mm mag, don't waste your money. The 30-06 will handle everything else just fine. The 7mm mag is the most over rated cartridge to come out in the past 50 years, that was until the short mags showed up...

Get the .25-06rem.

Hunting with a 7mm mag in Texas is like driving a huge lifted truck that never leaves the pavement.

As many here would agree, either would be a fine choice. I've shot a ton of hogs, & lots of Whitetails & Mulie's with both calibers.

But, if your hankering for a "new" rifle anyhow, let's say strictly for West Tx, where I've hunted all my life.... My choice would be my .264 Win. Mag. With the long range shots on Auodad, Prairie Goats, & Mulie's in that wide open area around the Fort Davis Mountains,
I've made some damn lucky long range shots using a 120 grain Partition in my .264 WM.

But, thats just my Favorite "long range" West Texas rifle. Good luck hunting & welcome to West Texas. Those wide open desolate spaces out here will make you feel like your the only hunter for 1000 miles. Awesome landscape!

You need to also be aware of the dangers in that area. My Texas State Trooper buddies all tell me the Drug Cartels do a lot of smuggling through that area because of the lack of LEO's needed to patrol such a vastly unpopulated area and the proximity to El Paso. Be safe!

I like my 7rem mag. It has done well for me. The cartridge is great ballistically. I can shoot mine with out any worries about the recoil. A good stock, good pad and good technique make it easy. And a 162 AMax with a 625 BC at 3000+ is amazing!

Jmo. I will likely get a 25-06 one day....or just build a 6-06....hmmm decisions...

Get the 7mm. you have medium rifles, get something with more umph..I would suggest you try one before you buy, but there is little diff. in the recoil of the the 7 and 06..30-06 that is..While I like my .25-06 there are times when it does not kill as well as I would prefer at longer ranges...

Hmmm...30-06 180gn at 2800fps, 7RM 175gn at 2800fps, there might be a slight advantage in ballistics but none a hunter or game animal will see in real conditions, so why have a repetative rifle when you could have something different!

So my vote would quickly be for the 25-06 well actually I'd rather have a 257R

.25-06 is my vote too. I've had 3 different 7mm RM and just couldn't warm up to them. Gotta agree with the above statements regarding performance. The performance advantage over the ol '06 just isn't enough to really make it worth talking about to me. Or for deer and pronghorn you could load up some good 120g projectiles for your 7mm08 and go whack em.
