Stopped by my local shop late this afternoon and he had a 1954 Win Mod70 in 220 Swift. Metal is excellent but a matte finish. Lettering is sharp so it appears to be original. I'm not up on Pre-64s so looking for info. Were they all gloss blue or is the matte finish factory? All sights are there including front hood. Only mark in the metal is on the top of the barrel where it appears it may have spent time in a gun rack, it's a very light mark though. The bottom metal and trigger guard do have some scratches. The wood is excellent, not perfect but extremely good for a 59 year old gun. Comes with a 10x El Paso Weaver in the rollover type Weaver rings so the iron sights can be used. The scope does have a crack in the objective lens on one side but I couldn't see it looking through the scope.

The shop was closing so I didn't have time to get pics but I tried to describe it accurately. Estimate on value?

Values are in the $1000 to $1500 value. The reciever bluing is different than the bluing on the barrel and floorplate as it left the factory. It is hard to describe the bluing other than it is not high gloss but a medium color and gloss. The reciever is a low luster bead blast type of coloring.

Tatelaw: Th metal on the receiver was always a matte finish;the barrels on the Swifts were SS but plated with something so they could be blued and were a matte finish from the factory....264 Win Mag tubes were the same on some rifles,although others were CM....not sure on the Swifts although a buddy had a blued CM varmint contour on a Swift.

Do you have access to a bore scope to check the throat?

I assume you ran the numbers to determine date of manufacture.

What price was on the rifle? A really clean Swift can approach a couple of grand,maybe more.

The shop is selling it on consignment. The man who owns it got it from his uncle who used it for deer hunting when he got older and no longer wanted to deal with recoil.

I've always wanted a Pre 64 and I think this one may be it.

Be the first to the shop in the morning and buy that thing ASAP. You won't find another one for anywhere near that price in any condition.

Sounds like a darn good price. Saw a pre 64 220 at cabelas awhile back for 1500, but then again they seem to price themselves around $400 high

That's a darn good deal on a pre-64 220 Swift. I probably see 10 '06's and .270's for every pre-64 220 Swift I see.

That's a good price. If you don't like it, you can easily get your money back and then some. If it was only used for deer hunting and the bore was cleaned and oiled after deer season each year, it should be a dandy shooter.

Wow that's a smoking deal, id snatch it up ASAP. Id say the rifles probably in the $2,000-$2,500 range from similar ones ive seen for sale. The 220 swift is one of the harder to find pre 64's so you should feel pretty lucky!

Oh man, you could probably double or tripple your money on that one...

After looking more closely at it today, I believe it is a cleaner gun than I originally thought. The only rough spots in the wood are along the top edges of the barrel channel and I wonder if it came that way from the factory? I can't see how those marks could have gotten there with there being some marks on the barrel or elsewhere on the rifle.

I'd bet those marks got there when someone tried to take the barreled action out of the stock without removing the front-sight tension screw; or, perhaps more likely, when someone tried to drift the rear sight out and missed with whatever hammer or punch they were using.

I bought its twin a couple months back, made in 41, paid $1200 but no scope. The swift will shoot.

It's hard to tell it from the photos but all of the rough places match the grain of the wood. They also carry across evenly on both sides of the barrel. It almost looks like the top edge along both sides of the barrel didn't get sanded down as smoothly as the rest of the stock.
