What a weekend. Friday night 1 stand late and coyote hangs up at 495 yds. 1 shot right through the lungs. Saturday morning by noon 7 dogs down. The last 4 were the real story. Sat down over looking a little bowl that I knew a pack of dogs has been hanging around. Snuck in and sat down and started calling. For some reason in this real open country not very responsive to calling. Rancher hasn't had the cattle in thier much so grass is layed over from storms but lets the coyotes lay down in the grass and very hard to see.
First dog starts walking out and gets to 400 yds. I hit him and down he goes. 2nd one starts out behind him just walking and looking around. Gets to 375 and down he goes. 3 and 4 start sneaking out and get to 325 and I knock down another. 4 stands there to look at 3 and doesn't move, I miss and he goes to 350 and stops and I put him down. 4 coyotes, 5 shots all between 325 and 400 yds. Have never seen coyotes just walk out when the shooting starts, usually like a covey of quail and just bust out everywhere. I could see them just looking around trying to figure out what was going on.
Weapon of choice:
Oly Arms 243 WSSM, 75 Vmax at 3400 FPS, Vortex mil-dot 5x15, Timmney single stage 3# trigger. Love my new Caldwell Dead Shot Field Pod.

"What a weekend"....I'll say!

Congrats!

I curious also as to why they did not blow out of there after the shooting began. I've had them crouch down after the first shot, then rocket out of there on the 2nd shot.

Usually with a pack of them lucky to get 1 or 2 at best. Never had them stand around trying to figure out what is going on. I was supriesed that they are all older dogs, not young ones.

At my back which is why i wans't waiting for them to come in. I circled the bowl and walking about 1 mile around them and then the wind changed right when i got to the top. Thought i would be busted but wasn't much of a wind.

Man, nice shootin'......coyotes being coyotes will make a guy scratch your head. They just don't ALWAYS do what we think they should.
I once filmed a coyote that stood around and let a "newbie" shoot at it until finally on about the 11th, or 12th shot, he connected. It never ran away and was with-in 150 yards of us thw hole time. If I hadn't filmed it, it would be a hard story to sell.

Nice job Faith. Wonder if the "bowl" was doing strange things to the report of the rifle and maybe they couldn't figure out which direction to run?
