I have seen all sides of 'tippers' when I was working through college, from the most generous to the stingiest. While i have never agreed with the mandatory 18% on large parties, I do know that it is there because often the server gets screwed on those types of large groups. It should be mandatory that everyone has to wait tables at least one year of their life....... It would change a lot of attitudes, and increase a lot of common courtesy in people.

I understand that my waitress could be sitting on her ass somewhere smoking crack or shooting up or selling puzzy for that matter but instead she is working to earn a living and feed a family.
Compare that to the majority of Obama supporters. Absolutely worthless pieces of fecal matter..
I tip well, well over 18% and am proud to be able to help someone who is doing their best to help themselves in this economy that is being directed towards socialism more and more.

The wait staff pool their tips at the two Applebee's I frequent. Many times you'll see more than just your specific waitress deliver food and drinks plus clear the table. Especially for parties over 8...

Some places pool tips with the bussing staff and dishwashers too, so don't always assume your tip is only going to the server...

If I can afford to eat out I can afford to tip for good service. I tend to be a 20% tip kind of guy, sometimes more.

My wife waited tables in college and she can be the harshest critic of wait staff. She says she had to bust her behind to earn a good tip, and she expects the same of others. Having said that, while I don't necessarily agree with the automatic 18% for larger tables, when the service is good, the tip should be good. Displays a serious lack of character to do otherwise.

Generally large groups tend to tip less each than if they had eaten as a party of 4. It is still just as much work for the servers if they eat together in a large group. I have no problem with insisting on the 18%. I would rather restaurants just charge more and pay the employees a fair wage. Then if you receive bad service complain. Enough complaints will get bad servers fired.

18% is an absurd tip amount regardless of the service or food. Period.
Sit down in a decent restraunt and do some quick math. If all the wait staff was $1 per person they'd be making $15/hr just to write down your order, fill your water glass, and bring you food somebody else cooked. If you have eat'in at the same place twice, you most likely have had the fly or bugger special. They WILL remember you when you come back. A buddies daughter worked at the local Red Lobster to put herself through school. She said she always wanted to ask the old geezers that gave .25 or .50 cent tips what 10% was when they were in school. Did math change?

18% is an absurd tip amount regardless of the service or food. Peroid. Ever waited tables? I doubt it...... Ever buy your buddies beer at the local establishment? Or are you too cheap for that as well? Places I frequent know I'm a great tipper, they definitely remember me. I get outstanding service from my usual places as they know I'm not a cheap ass.

Thats the trouble; tips are no longer for excellent service, the staff expect them every time.. And I don't see it as my obligation to make up for crap wages, that's between the staff and the business owner.. In other lines of employment, staff do a good job because they take pride in their work, not because the expect a tip..

One or two quarters for the red plate special is more of an insult than a tip. You can bust your arse or sit on it, they will not change.

If the Applebees policy of charging 18% for 8 or more is clearly articulated and printed for each customer to read, the group then made a choice to proceed with ordering and eating and being responsible for the 18%. Do we know that piece of info?

And I don't see it as my obligation to make up for crap wages Aww heck, I just pay the friggin' tip, usually shoot for 20% More if the service was good. Cranky waitress? I appreciate her honesty. And the cranky ones generally give the best service afterwards if ya tip 'em anyway the first go-round. Prob'ly works the same way with whores I dunno

I tip 20% at restaurants. I leave a tip for the room service in hotels. I tip when I get a haircut.
God always seems to pay me back double.

I guess it comes down to tippers and tightwads. Tightwads think we a stupid for tipping. It's not right, unfare, rip off, yadayadayada. Tippers sit back and smile, the bugger went into your meal, not mine.
