I saw my Dad dump a pile of elk with his Winchester 70 pre-64 with 130 grain Sierra bullets, some on a dead run. Did you ever see an elk do a somersault?

Not a elk but a few whitetails.

I can't see the sense in going any heavier than the 160 grain Partition?

I have played with the Woodleighs a little bit and actually shot a black bear last week with one. They are quite accurate out of a Model 700 that I bobbed the barrel on. They make a pretty good short range hammer out of a 270. In all honesty, however, I think they're more a novelty than anything else.

For elk I've been using Barnes 130's and 110's with great results in recent years.

Lotsa great choices for a 270 on an elk hunt.

I've shot a lot of elk with a 270. I always used 150 gr, either Partitions or Speer Hotcores. I could never tell much difference between them for performance.

If a 270 Winchester shooting a 150 grain won't work for you then go use a 338/9.3mm/375 something to kill with. At that point IMO not take baby steps

A 270 should get the dang job done with 130 gr. partitions, let alone 150's wink

My last years bull, a 5x5 Roosevelts took two 150 Core Lokts that were pass throughs. They worked perfectly.

Unless you already have some Woodleighs handy or a cheap sourse, I doubt they're worth the effort.... My humble $.02

A cup and core 150 no kidding when you could have scared them to death with the Barnes Thriple XYZ bullet?

I've been in several elk camps where hunters used .270 Winchesters, either with 130 grains or 150 grains bullets, both factory and reloads. They killed elk without any problems. I know a number of hunters here in Idaho who use it resulting in great benefit to their freezers. They use the same bullets as above.

The only problem with the .270 Winchester is that it is not a .280 Remington, like mine. wink grin

You can, today, with the ammo shortage, get 270 ammo at Wallys. Try THAT with a 280. grin

Quite the contrary here. Nothing around but odd ball stuff: plenty of 280 rem on the shelves...Go figure. Guess no one uses it here in this town..

Stick with the 130 or 150 grain bullets you will be fine, 130 grain partitions have done well for me in the past.

Both 130 & 150 bullets have proven themselves. I preferred the 150 because they'll shoot to almost the same point of impact but hit a little harder when they got there.

go with which ever groups the best, they all will work. my 270 favors 140 grain over 130's.

Yea, group size is more important than bullet performance on a 600 pound animal that has a vital zone 12 inches in diameter

grin....Yeah, some of us get carried away. I've got most of my rifles dialed in so I can take their eye out at 200 yards if I so please wink....That is, if I have a nice steady rest anyway grin

I killed my first 6 elk with 130 gr partitions in .270 in the 1970's. Then I bought a light weight .338 Win mag because I got a good deal. I have killed a lot of elk with it but the .270 did just as good. In fact I got a really good deal on a weatherby ultra light weight .270. It will probably be my rifle of choice now with 140 grain accubonds.
