Very cool Mart! That sounds like a real good load as well.. Need to grab some 4320 one day.

I tried a few powders in it, 4895, 4064, RL15. When I first got it I had a fair amount of 4320 on hand. It was recommended to by a couple of friends with Whelens. It has worked so well I really haven't tried any others with the 250 grain bullets in a long time. I have been playing with RL15 and some Hornady 275 grain bullets. I lucked into a little over 400 of them so will have plenty for a long time.

Yeah, I almost scored a new box of 275 grain Barnes Original's, but the fella that had them was in Canada. I think those would have been fun to work with..

I think if I keep coming up short finding RL15, I may get some 4320 and give it a whirl. It looks about the same on QL, but I have been stubborn as RL15 has been really good with everything, accuracy and speed wise.. Tough to give it up. BUT, if I can't find it, well, I'll move on.

The pictures posted look just like my 7600 in .300 Savage which was a 300 piece run put out by Grice Gun Shop. Also have one of their limited run .35 Remingtons but that one wears a black plastic stock and both are great shooters.

My .35 Whelens are both bolt guns. A 700 Classic and an 18 1/2" barreled Savage 110 with an ER Shaw barrel. I load the 220 Speer FN in the shorty 110 with H335 @ 2550fps. Also like the HDY 200 Spire point, and Remington 200 pointed Core-lokt. Really haven't found a bullet that won't shoot great or kill deer dead! The Whelen my 358 Winchesters and my 350 Mag are just hammers from hell on deer.

beretzs,

I think I have a partial box of the Barnes 275s. I get home from the slope tonight. I'll check and let you know.

Sweet, thank you. Been wanting to try the old Barnes or the Woodleigh 275 PP's. Appreciate it.

For deer, consider downloading.

I keep my Whelen zeroed for stout loads behind stout 225 grain bullets, currently an X-bullet, so I'd be lazy and just use that load rather than resight. I'm loaded for elk and moose. As is, it was a bit "more than needed" for the three whitetail I killed with hot loads. But If I was going to change it to a deer-only cartrige, I'd probably download a soft 200-grain bullet. I really like the 200 grain Hornady round-nose soft point, downloaded to 2350 fps. Its a load I worked up with H4895 for plinking. The bullet was apparently meant for this velocity, as expansion and penetration are real purty. The load is maybe 100 fps faster than a 35 Remington, Hornady ammo factory load.

I do something very similar. I have a 7600 in 35 Whelen that I got from a fellow on this august forum. I shoot the 200 grain Remington SPCL over H4895. In the past decade, I have taken more deer with that gun and that load than any other.

If you dig around on my weblog (see signature) you can find details about all of it, including load development.

Edit: Here's a link The Whelenizer

For deer with the Whelen, I use the 225 gr. Sierra pushed by RL15
