I don't think you could round it out any better than that!

Bob,

Many rifle loonies don't realize that a .223 (or even a .220 Swift) can be handloaded with cast bullets to duplicate a .22 Long Rifle or .22 Magnum--and more cheaply than the cost of .22 rimfire ammo these days.

Of course, rimfire ammo is more compact, allowing a hunter to carry more. If that's a big consideration the .22 Hornet can also be loaded the same way, and when loaded full-power with today's powders is a 300-yard varmint round.

That's a good point. And not only cheaper but actually available.

John that never entered my mind....true enough!

My comment was along the lines that the three cartridges are too common, reliable, and effective in their class to get the rifle loonies all excited. smile

I agree with the choices completely.

Sounds like a winning trio right there..

Thanks buddy. However, I actually sold my great shooting FN PBR XP to gunnut308. That rifle in the middle is my 2008 limited with a 300 wsm extreme weather barrel screwed on. It's a damn good shooter too..

But it begs the question, who in their right mind would want to handload for the volume of shooting a 22lr encompasses?

I think the only thing I'd change with my 3 gun battery would be a .264 Win Mag in favor of the .257 Wby. As soon as the barrel goes, that is exactly what this .257 will become. With the 223 AI covering paws and the .350 claws, the .264 should be "magic" on all of NA's hooved animals....................

+1, I like the middle one, a .350RM? This is on a Classic-70 action and what else? I have quite a few rifles that look much like this, mostly .338WM and 9.3x62s.

It'll make the rifle loonies fit to be tied, but have to admit....this is "it". smile

That is basically where I've ended up... 'cept my 375 is the Ruger version.

The 223 is a 8 twist, cause shooting those little 75 Amaxes at long ranges is just way too much fun.

The 30-06 is just all business, sees 90% of the action and is beat up. McMillan stocked M70- of course. wink

And the 375Ruger Alaskanish is just cause no one else has made us southpaws such a handy little SS cannon...

I'd be way happier to have the option of a fourth rifle. It would be a 6MM in a M70 FW w/ McM Compact EDGE.

.223 AI
Rem 700 factory sporter re chambered. 1-12" twist.
McMillan Mountain Rifle (BDL) 50% dark gray, 25% yellow, 25% black
Pictured with factory bottom metal but usually wears Gen 1 HS detatchable bottom metal that is currently off getting coated.
Shilen trigger
Graphite black cerekote
Talley LW's
Leupold VX-III 3.5x10x40 w/M1 elevation installed

Despite the 12 twist it shoots 65gr Gamekings sub 1/2 moa.........

.350 Rem Mag
SS Win 70 Classic CRF.
20" Lilja SS #3 12" twist.
NECG Masterpiece front and rear irons.
Rifle Basix trigger.
McMillan Compact Swirly 34% dark gray, 33% black, 33% white
Tungsten Cerekote
Leupold VX-III 1.5x5X20
Talley QD rings w/levers coated graphite black.

Shoots 200gr TTSX's into a ragged hole, 200 and 225gr Accubonds only slightly worse.

.257 WBY
Stiller Predator LA coated graphite black. Bolt and handle are titanum, the flutes were polished out and Campfire knob added.
Jewell trigger.
Lilja SS #3 3 groove 10 twist fluted by Karl and crowned at 25".
Kampfeld lug.
Talley LW's coated titanium.
6x42 FX-III w/M1 elevation
McMillan Sporter (BDL) 50% black, 50% orange

Shoots everything I've tried under MOA but it really likes 100 TTSX's, 110 Accubonds, 100gr Scirrocos, and 115 B-tips. Currently shooting the B-tips....

Sooner or later our heritage of hunting is going to be a rich mans sport and the words "Outfitter" and "Hunt Industry" will be synonymous with cancer and A.I.D.S. among blue collar hunters like me and my family! (A.L. Williams - 2010)

I've been acquiring rifles for a while and I notice that I have my favorites that get used and a few that are unscoped and will likely live in the safe.

As many have done, I'm thinking of selling the ones that don't get used so I can just get a few that I really, really, like.

I'm thinking I want three rifles. Once I get the core battery, I might go back to getting more (because its fun) but I'm leaning toward refocusing my dollars into three.

Calibers are the question.

I'm sure one will be a .260 or 6.5x55 - love the 6.5, covers all deer, hog, etc. needs. I have a .260 now. Like the history of the 6.5x55.

Next is a .30 cal - will either be 30-06 or 300 H&H. Leaning 30-06 because the more I shoot one, the more I feel it fits a great balance of recoil, effectiveness, large supply of available ammo. Like the H&H over the win mag because of history and tradition. I own one of each.

Lastly is an africa rifle. Specifically, buffalo. Don't think I will ever go after any other dangerous game. Thinking .375 or .404. Don't have one of these.

What would you do?
