pseshooter - No wrong choices in anything mentioned here. Someone mentioned that in the T3, the .243 & .25-06 share the same action size. I hand-load, so ammo is not an issue. If you travel and get separated from your ammo, .243 may be slightly easier to find in a pinch. I've owned a new T3 in .25-06 and liked its light weight, but never used it for hunting. I traded it for a used Ruger #1 in .243. Altogether, I own or owned 7 6mm rifles; Parker-Hale .243, had it for 43 years and planned to be buried with it. My current go to is a Kimber Montana in 7-08 and have killed 2 deer, 6-7 pigs and <6 coyotes with. Those animals ran a combined 200 yards +/-. The furthest I've shot an animal when I knew its exact range was 157 yards. I've shot further (up to an estimated 300 yards), but have always enjoyed getting as close as possible to the animal. As everyone knows, shot placement is the most critical element of success, followed by bullet construction, how easily an animal can be retrieved (a huge consideration in the steep canyons in the CA Coastal Ranges), etc.

Do you work on the Pacific Stock Exchange? I was a market-maker on the options floor from 1985-91.

Geedubya - You have an interesting group of rifles. Can you provide details? Would also like to hear the hunting stories of some critters you have displayed.

Went to the range earlier this AM to try out a couple more loads in the 243. Also wanted to check zero on a couple other rifles.

If all works well I'll go back to my lease Thursday for a few days R&R and try to stick something with my crossbow. But a couple rifles won't be far behind.

Decided check out the 6.5 WSM hoginator, see if it was still good to go.

first try out of the box with 100 gr. partitions @ 100 yds........




loaded some 90 gr. accubonds and shot them, but after a couple tries I notice one of the base screws was loose, Bummer. Took the scope off, tightened the base screws and that changed the POI.

I'll load both as they shoot pretty much to the same POI.

Guess I'll use the TSX's.

gee, I too would like to know the calibers of those beautiful rifles.. No need to go back, I am sure we will see them again.. How do you like the 6.5WSM????

Might try F210's in the WSM with MagPro rather than the mag primers.
I've run more than a few through 7WSM with MagPro and tried lots of combos. The LR primers are all that are needed and tightened things up - at least in the 7. CCI large rifle are another choice if you have those on hand.

First, some background.

Years ago, before I had sense to pour piss out of a boot, I would tend to go to places where there were women in attendance and sometimes adult beverages were consumed to excess. Usually toward closing time I could always convince myself that there was something about that girl I liked.

I'm still that way when it comes to different rifle calibers. I can find something about most of them that I like. I think at my zenith I had dies for 57 different chamberings.

So with that in mind, I like the 6.5's. I've had rifles in
6.5 x 55, 260 Rem. 6.5 x 284, 264 Win Mag. and 6.5 WSM.

My Sako Varmint in 260 Rem is a shooter.

My favorite is the 6.5 x 284.

The 6.5 WSM is growing on me. I found it pre-enjoyed on GunBroker. It was smithed by the late Bo Clerke. I bought it very reasonable (as in cheap). Just the way I like it.

This particular rifle has a 1 in 8 twist so it should be good for heavier bullets. It is not the easiest round to load for and you won't find brass with the correct head stamp. Don't know why but I've never availed myself of Quickload, and load data is sparse, I'm not a hot rodder so others can probably get more velocity.

I neck down 270 WSM brass. The rifle came with 100 rounds, loaded with 140 gr. Hornady SST's. To my mind the Hornady SST's are much too frangible. I've tried quite a few different 140s. The Sierra Spitzers.


Here are some groups I've shot at 100.








I very seldom shoot past two hundred yards, but this rifle should be capable of reaching out a ways.

There is one spot I'm set up to shoot hogs at 165 yds.




but also where I can shoot from 200 yds. to infininty.




The turkey are at 675 yds. according to the range finder. That's the shot I plan to set up for.



The hog under the black dot in the photo below is +/- 1,200 yds. IIRC (according to my rangefinder)

I didn't, and most likely won't try that shot. I climbed down and rode to within 300 yds. and put a stalk on him. Wind was wrong but I took a chance. He got my wind and started running. I flung a couple bullets after him, but no blood.


One of these day's I'll get set up to reach out and touch something.
