I just ordered a new one in .270 Win. I see the barrels are finished in gray now as opposed to the old almost chrome finish. My question is are the new AW finishes as durable as the old ones? It almost seems like a barrel coating now and not true stainless?

It's not a coating, just a rough bead blast. The finish doesn't last all that well on the new rifles, prepare to see lots of scratches. The first one hurts the most! Though it seems like the recent rifle matte finishes are better than those from a couple years ago. A guy could almost scratch those with a fingernail.

Does that mean that it will rust everywhere it's scratched?

Nah - it shouldn't rust any different than before.

I hope this thing isn't going to be a POS as it's costing over $700 which is more money than I ever shelled out for a rifle before.

I believe they use Aluminum Oxide beads to bead blast the barreled actions on the Hawkeyes. I think the MK2's are just in their raw, if not polished, state. The metallurgy is the same. You'll not see any rust.
By the way, in case you missed it, Jeremiah was a bullfrog.

Mine has been out in some downpours and hasn't had an issue with rusting.

Some liked the polished metal look. I didn't and consider the dull finish a huge improvement. Because the texture is a little rough it will smooth up in spots that rub against surfaces and create a shiny spot easier than the shiny metal.
I could care less the Rugers are all work horses, not show horses anyway.

The target gray finish was very nice. I was hoping that they would just switch to that for all their stainless rifles when they decided to get away from the polished stainless.

I like the target grey finish... Is that what the Hawkeye All Weather comes in or is that something else?

That's pretty cool. I haven't seen that finish on a 77 before.

+1, I agree.
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA
