56 here. I notice sometimes I'll turn my upper body and lean to walk but my legs don't follow causing a slight stumble.

I am almost 65 Mickey but with the Meniere's disease there are days I cannot walk a straight line and other days just standing is a chore.

Spinal arthritis. The nerves that deliver signals from brain to legs and back, by way of the spine, are becoming gradually constricted, interrupting the signals. It's very common, and why most old folks gradually lose mobility. You can minimize it by addressing the cause, which is a high starch diet. Get rid of starch, dramatically reduce sugar (except that in the form of fruit - not juice), and eliminate processed foods.

At 70 I still haven't had my balance affected. But, besides an afternoon nap, I now often find it necessary to take a morning nap. blush

Yep and with bad hips, a fused ankle and worn out knee on the opposite side it is an ADVENTURE walking around. Not so much the house but outside and in the shop......

I guess it is one of the "gifts" of aging, I would rather have received wisdom. I fight it at every opportunity. I work out on the treadmill or elliptical 5 days a week, if I don't use my hands for stability it is much more difficult and works my balance. At least one day a week I hike off trail w/ a pack and rifle and find this helps also. If I am in steep country hiking poles really help. At 67 I find it important to move slower and watch where I am going at all times. I have had a lot of friends debilitated by poor conditioning and falls and will do all I can to avoid it. A body in motion stays in motion.

I love to walk but see that this constant vertigo may end it and start a fast track slide down hill. I have had to give up driving and walking any kind of a straight line when the world is spinning out of control is getting harder every week.

No! I don't drag my feet when I walk!

If you'll put a bit of 'pee gravel' in your shoes or boots....it will help you to do the same!! grin

And at 74...I can still give this SNJ-5 a 'work-out' on occasion!!

I could bust my azz just getting a beer out of the fridge; I've always been a bit of a klutz. It's funny, when I was young I was REALLY agile, but still a bit of a klutz. Now I'm just more klutz than anything else.

Been doing it lately and I'm only 36. Doc said it's scrip side effects. People look at me funny because I'm using a cane.

Wanna feel really weird - spend a day in a wheelchair in public. Some of the looks and stares I got - just really made me think about how I treat others and those immediate pre-conceptions we all seem to have.

Last 2 weeks sure have changed my outlook on a lot of things.

The older I get, the more table edges, door frames and door knobs reach out to get me....they didn't used to do that.

Luckily my skin is still pretty thick, so I'm not a bleeder yet...

I can start to tell I"m not as good as I used to be as I approach 50.

Have used walking sticks since the 30s though on hunts with packs and such, and really, the 3rd point of contact always did help a person.

Fairly sure from what I"m seeing approaching 50 that there can't be anything good about further aging. Other than maybe being able to retire from work before I die, and the fact that I'm closer to dying every day... though I sure hope I"m not really close at all to that...

Try Cialis. It gives to a balancing rod to hold on to.

i have a herniated disc center back, spinal stenosis, and a bum right ankle from a m/c accident as a kid. Doc guy says about the only thing for the ankle is to fuse it, don't think so. So on bad days i just wobble around. Tried to take the dog down to the end of the street last night, couldn't do it, her pulling was aggravating by back. And this a guy that some years back could do 20miles in a day in rough country.
