I will be in Fairbanks the entire month of Aug for a military exercise. I'm not sure how much free time I will have but is there anything there that is a must see or do? Doesn't look like I will have time to hunt, but is there anything close to check out? Hiking trails, gun stores...ect. Any advice is great.

Cliff, I lived there for a long time prior to heading to Idaho.

There are plenty of things to do....
Hiking? Hit the angel rocks trail....hit the Chena hot springs for a relaxing soak, the place is great.
For a good dive bar, head down to skinny dicks halfway inn on the parks hwy.
Great food at the Pump house, Pikes landing, and the turtle club in fox...great prime rib!

Head up to the chatanka lodge for a brew if you can..great place. Wet a line in the river up there too, great grayling fishing.
Enjoy your visit!

Pioneer's Park is worth an hour or few just because you can get a few snapshot views of some local history. As well, if you know a bit of the area's history, a walking tour through the old down town might be of interest. Fairbanks has an interesting past. And actually, a lazy paddle via canoe, down the Chena River through Fairbanks: (start a few miles outside) gives one a different perspective.

Nice museum at UAF, some good animal mounts. Drive up to the Arctic Circle, there is a pull-off and tourist signs. AT least one right-there place to look at the pipeline near town, too.

I'd do the arctic circle too if you've not been there, kind of like a bucket list, being that close and not saying youv'e been above the circle... well seems lilke to close not to, if you have time and wheels.

We liked teh UAF museum.

We were not much on food or bars, though there are some good ones around from what I've heard.

Creamer Field was good and I'd wonder through there again if I had the time.

Take an hour and head over to Mark Knapp's workshop (The Cutting Edge) on Fox Avenue and check it out. He's a great guy to meet and his wife is about as nice as they come you will learn more in an hour with Mark about custom knife making then you would ever think possible. IMO, he's the best maker in N. America
