This looks an awful lot like an interesting Griffin and Howe so I decided to take a chance on it. What do you guys think, legit or not?

I don't know if legit, but it is a fine looking rifle in my book! The only thing about the rifle that doesn't work for me are the scope blocks.

Looks very similar to all G&H's I ever saw, and looks very close to my G&H model 70.

Where's reelman? He likes the G&H rifles... Actually that is a damn nice rifle. Tons of character... I think you did well..

The barrel is serialized to the rifle on the bottom of the barrel and the trigger is a single set. I am pretty confident its a legitimate G&H. What do you guys think?

Looks like you scored, nice gun. I was just ready to chime in if it was a G & H it would be stamped on the barrel.

Like other custom gunmakers Griffin & Howe would build a rifle to the customers specifications. I have examined many G&H rifles over the years but yours is the first with a Mannlicher style bolt handle.

Very nice. Agree that the whole gun may well have been built by G&H, but I'm not so sure about the crude attempt at a butterknife bolt handle. On the other hand, G&H would do anything a customer was willing to pay for. (But I can imagine the arguments between Seymour Griffin or one of the 'smiths and the customer over the aesthetics of it!)

The bolt handle was something that I was uncertain about until I had the rifle in my hands. It is well executed and feels good in the hand. It certainly looks better than it appears in the pictures. The thing that confirms the originality of it for me is the fact that the stock isn't notched for a bolt. It does seem odd to me that someone would want a 22 inch bull barrel though. I am looking forward to seeing how she shoots.

I know this is an old post, but thanks to Michael Petrov's volume two I believe I have finally figured out who made this rifle! While it was barreled by Griffin and Howe, it is not a G&H rifle per Bob Beach and Paul Chapman. What I thought was black and white plastic inlaid into the stock are actually ebony and ivory. That feature along with a few other subtle characteristics lead me to believe this is a James V. Howe rifle.
