I've ridden snowmobiles a few times, but have never owned one, and I am thinking of picking up a used machine for the winter. Riding would be primarily trail riding, and maybe some frozen lakes for ice fishing. I'm more concerned with a comfortable ride, reliability, and maybe carrying/pulling some supplies than I am with "race-like" performance. Given that background, does anyone have any recommendations of what to look for, or what to stay away from in a used sled? 2-stroke vs. 4-stroke? Specific manufacturers or models? I know that generally the liquid cooled machines are generally longer lived than fan cooled, just hoping to get some input here so as not to jump into the local used market blind. Thanks!

Polaris and Ski-Doo have the most models that can be used as work machines vs sport/hill-climbing. I'm not an Arctic Cat fan, but the Bearcat is a work beast, but a bich if you get it stuck. The Yamaha Viking is also a beast of a work machine.

I tend to stick with the longer tracked machines as they are less prone to getting stuck.

I've never ridden any of the 4-strokes so I can't help you there.

The above advise sounds good.

I bought a SkiDoo Touring for fishing through ice, but have yet to use it.

couldn't disagree more for his stated intended uses

great sled, though I like my 800 RMK mo betta

but for what he's going to do, I'd go Skandic or Tundra fan cooled

trails get packed down and trying to get snow up on heatexchangers and hi fax is a pain.

but really if you're not going to ride all that much, be hard to go wrong with an old Indy lite or an Indy 500 if you can find one.

probably not much more than 1K to 1500

lotta fun for the loot involved

I really need to sell 2 sleds I have, cause I'm lookin pretty hard at buying 2 more

I need 9 snowmachines, like Obama needs another Republican in office.

Sit on a few and get a feel for rider position. A lot of the newer sleds are designed with an upright or standing seat position compared to slouched seat of years ago. Tne newer suspensions are way better than they were 10 years ago - your back will thank you. Good luck

Ski Doo Tundra or Skandic WT's would be perfect for your intended use. If I were looking for a non-mountain off trail sled, the Ski Doo Tundra Extreme would be my choice.

All the advice so far is spot on if you lived in Alaska but ...

The OP lives in Vermont and I have no idea but I can only imagine that riding conditions might be a little different.

"Riding would be primarily trail riding, and maybe some frozen lakes for ice fishing."

And ... "maybe carrying/pulling some supplies"

A long track with deep lugs would not be the way to go if you're primarily riding groomed trails and a pure workhorse might be a bit of an overkill.

Just my two cents but this sounds like a trail or touring sled would fit the bill far better. Plus how many mountain machines and workhorses can you find in Vermont? What's popular in Vermont?

I can understand from living and riding snowmachines in Alaska that these aren't at the top of the list. You either had a mountain machine or a workhorse and very few people even considered owning a trail or touring sled. A two up might not be a bad idea either.

^^^ THAT'S IT. The perfect snowmachine.

I'd like to see how it does in deep powder though. The kind where you get off and sink all the way up to your chest.

Watch around the 5min 50sec mark..that looks fairly loose powdery snow?

I am going to guess those two tubes offer the machine *a lot* of buoyancy.

I seem to recall the Russians built an APC style armoured vehicle based on a similar system...

I don't burn gas and make noise - I have horses.

But, am I the only one to correct snowmobile?

It's not pure deep over your head powder like you find in the wilds of Alaska. You wouldn't be able to see those fence posts if it was really deep.

Description

Selling a 2002 Polaris Edge X 600. This sled has 4479 miles. It has a great condition studded track, Fox shocks, Extra 10 suspension, hand and thumb warmers, J hooks and hand guards, Runs excellent! No rips, dents, or broken parts. The entire sled was serviced by a professional Polaris dealer last winter and needs nothing but a rider! My sleds are very clean inside and out and are always stored in a enclosed trailer. Price is firm, no lowball
EDGE= smooth ride 600 = great power ...and that price of 1600...sold its mine !!!
