Spit on the inside of he windshield and use your hand to wipe it off. Doesn't get things too clean, but it does re-distribute the dirt.

About the best one I've found is on the end of my arm. Paper towels, Invisible glass and my hand. It's awkward but effective.

It's the awkward that he's trying to eliminate. The Windshield Wonder tool linked to above is the answer. I just looked at the tool in the Invisible Glass ad, and it looks to be about the same.
