It's not puzzling at all. All "gangs" evolve from individuals that don't have the fortitude to accomplish anything on their own. They have to display evidence of their affiliation to boost their confidence.

The local bar and grill is a biker hang out
I bet not a single biker that shows up makes less than $80K a year in his white collar job.
They wear the leather, drink beer and if they are lucky, get the soccer mom wife out of the mini-van and onto the back of his weekend toy to ride along. The local Wal-Mart does a brisk business selling bandanas.
They show up, do a lot of motor revving at idle, wave at each other without making eye contact when they pass on the road and then ride their 7 miles back to their house and park it until next weekend.
I think the reason I don't see gang bikers anymore is Gentrification.
Not that I miss them.

Not in that sense, I interact with 'em in juvenile form every day and am fairly well acquainted with all the psycho/socioeconomic factors. What I meant was its a puzzle they can label themselves so plainly while doing so much that has to be hidden. Still, I suppose a patch wearer can just remove the vest as needed. From the photo I dunno if that guy was wearing his. Makes me even happier the Deputy didn't get shot. Birdwatcher

I was sitting in a bar in Dubois Wy a couple years ago and up in front pulled about 10 or so Harley's. A guy a couple of stools down looked out the window at the new looking,
bikes and the leather coated, bandanna wearing guys and said Man look at those bada$$ Sons Of Arthritis. Was a good laugh.

Anyone that thinks any member of the Bandidos, or another gang like them that has a sole purpose of organized crime, doesn't know much about them, or the track record that precedes them.
