I just noticed the 257 Roberts in the 77 Mkll. I know it's a favorite caliber to many. How do you like it chambered in the Ruger? GeoW

I have a Ruger 77 MK2 RL that has been converted to a 77 RSI configuration and a tang safety Ruger 77R that has been rechambered to 257AI. Ruger 77s in 257 Roberts are built on a long action, which some folks thinks is necessary to get the most performance out of the 257's case capacity. Both of my Rugers shoot good, but not great, groups and the tang safety version has been involved in its fair share of 'chucks, coyotes, and deer since I got it in 1983.

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.
A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.

Two years ago dad and I went in and split a MkII Bob. Liked it so much, we went in together again and split another one a couple of months ago, so we each could have one. Both shoot well under an inch. I'm sure he'll chime in with the bullet and powder particulars that each prefer.
Now if I could only find another minty MKII .250 Savage in a pawn shop for cheap...

I have an M77 in 257 Roberts. It hates 117 grain SSTs but loves 100 grain Interlocks (H4350) and 75 grain hollowpoints (Re-15).
I don't eat anything that didn't have a mother.

As Cheesy said, we have a pair of them. Both like the 75 Sierra hp. with H4895 and Ramshot Hunter. They'll both shoot 115 partitions or 110 Accubonds well with H4350. My biggest problem is they are both somewhat finicky about seating depth and the earlier rifle has .06 longer throat.

I had one and shot a couple of deer with it. I couldn't get it to shoot ANYTHING much under 2", though, so it went down the road. I know other people have had much different experiences, but the 3 or 4 Rugers I've played with have all been, let's say, less than tack drivers.
Only a fool would sell an accurate .30-06

I used to have a 77 MKII in .257 Bob. Nice little gun, and accuracy was huntable, but nothing to write home about. If I had reloaded, I am sure I could have gotten better accuarcy. I would like to get another Ruger, but will probably go with the .260 Rem next time around.

I bought a used M77 MkII RL in .257 Rob. a couple of years ago. So far the most accurate load shot through it has been Federal Premiums with the 115-grain Nosler. My own loads with Hornady 117-grain SPBTs and Speer 120-grain SPs have not been anything to brag about. The rifle is plenty accurate enough for deer hunting, but I doubt that it will ever make it as a varmint gun.
On the other hand, this is great hunting rifle. The M77 RL is light, well-balanced and points like finger. I like it a lot. I'll bet it would make a real nice .270 as well.

Thanks all for the replys. Think I'll let this one rest on the back burner for a while. I have a 77 mk2 in 6.5x55. Been to the range once. Did 1 1/2" with 139 gr factory loads but opened to around 3" with factory 120 gr. I think theres a few things I can do to get the 139 gr under MOA. free floating the barrel for one. Thanks again, GeoW

I also have a 77MkII Ultralight. My rifle with a little bedding and trigger work has been a really good shooter, and velocities aren't bad considering the 20" barrel. Attached are a couple of photos. Here is a target showing the 115 gr. Barnes TSX in front of 44grs. IMR 4350. The group measures .6875" and the load averages about 1 inch for all groups. Velocity is a little above 2900 fps. This little Ruger is a keeper!

I have the Ultralight as well. I love the caliber and the gun. It's all a man would ever need for a whitetail woods rifle.
