My second favorite word that starts with F is Friday.
My parents never used or allowed it but I went to work at a restaurant at 14 and construction at 16 so it kinda came naturally. Still don’t understand why people are so offended by it. The same folks offended by words are ok with actions I find offensive.

It’s a [bleep] sound, get over it you pussy!

Jack,
As that originated in my high school days during the 70’s, it was simply an end-&-around ploy to say the F word whilst thinking “the old folks” had no clue. Cursing is an attitude & thoroughly exposes ones illiteracy. It’s not funny nor edifying. Paul stated in Ephesians I think, “Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth but such as is edifying for the moment.” Jesus told us, “...for every man will give an account for every word spoken.” Ultimately, Moses recorded in Deuteronomy,..”Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord in vain. For God will leave not leave him unpunished that takes His name in vain.”

If you think it’s funny or harmless, that’s your choice.

I find prosperity theology or the fact that the average salary in the US of a pastor was $99,000 when the average salary of all other occupations in the US was $40,000 a hell of a lot more offensive than the word “ass” or “[bleep]”.

Bad nasty habit.

A couple times I have gotten a bit ticked off at the red light on the bypass.
And dropped The Big One. When our girls were little.

A quick adjustment,
"Did you see that duck?"

Lucky, the river is right there and ducks fly around a good bit.

I use it wayyy more than I like.

I’m sure there’s a Freudian explanation for my vulgarity.
Probably something to do with my deep rooted desire to highly offend societal norms due to my disdain for society at large and it’s hypocrisy(s) specifically.

Never understood how A Man of God could live in a fancy personage,
utilities paid, car/clothing allowance, making 2-3 times his average
parishioner, and gfet up there pounding them to "give 'till it hurts".

I have one in mind. In the 80s he was living that life with a $50k salary.
At a time when few here made $10/hr. Average family still under $45k.
Plus, with a farming congregation, he rarely bought food.

When he retired in the 90s, they did a fundraiser, with the thermometer sign
showing progress out buy the road, to help him buy a house in retirement.

I hauled blacktop for his 1/2 mile driveway leading to a $300k house.

Always wondered if thats how one is supposed to $erve the Lord, and
$erve his fellow man?

PS. He really did preach the tithing sermon often, and did use the "til it hurts" line.

Never thought much good of that phugger disguised and a preacher!

Cursing is different than cussing. Cussing is just language, to curse someone is based on intent to deny someone salvation, spiritual wellbeing, sunder from God.

Any judgment of another's salvation, even without 'cuss' words is a curse... and frowned on by God.

Serious question. Please explain. It’s a sound. There are 7,102 languages in the world. I’m fluent in one and got a decent grasp of another. That means there are 7,100 more that I have no idea what the sounds mean, so by default I can’t be offended by the sounds they’re making. As long as my actions are pure why would my words be an issue?

Here’s my small take on church and pastor/preachers.

I’ve sat countless hours in pews, and I’ve seen and heard some incredible sermons that were designed to fleece a flock, or move a congregation to act or feel a certain way, that wasn’t IMO, Christ like.

Not judging....Just an informed observation. The last time my ass warmed a pew I watched a preacher hop around on his stage pleading for donations to improve upon the already massive and beautiful church. All while saying Jesus says, Jesus says, Jesus says.

In the back of the church a transient/homeless dude was seated and he started saying “Amen” after the preacher would say his Jesus says line of BS.

The Decons escorted the homeless dude out of the church. LMAO !

Amen

I think your explanation is actually quite profound. Harsh language seems like a way to be edgy and sort of generally offensive. Shock value, if you will. Kind of a persona some choose to adopt. I don’t mean you personally, as I don’t know you, so no offense intended.

Discussion here: https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/15794440/1

People who use some profanity tend to be more intelligent and honest than people who never do. Less filtered.

I use it for emphasis and humor. I almost never use at AT someone. On the rare occasion that I do, it's someone who really needs to hear it.

Sometimes, it makes an emphasis that is needed or accentuated the humor of something.

Anecdotal Example: When I was 17 I was arrested for a DUI. My parents were divorced. I lived with my mother. My father had moved a couple thousand miles away for job reasons. My mother couldn't understand and thought I was just a bad person.

My father knew better. He called me up, and we talked about it. He paused and said: "You're a good person and you have a bright future. I know it will be that way. You're eventually going to stop f***ing up. Here's the thing: Why not make it now? Why wait a few more years or so? ..."

That was emphasis. If he had said "messing up," it wouldn't have had the same affect. His intent was pure and his impact was elevated. It helped me decide to stop f***ing up.

Profanity also can be hilarious on occasion.

I never cussed until I was about 4 years into a 40+ year construction occupation. Didn't think much one way or the other about others that did, just didn't.

My wife would let slip a word or two or more if pushed. She grew up in a different kind of household.

My daughter had decided early in life not to cuss. She tells the story of a coworker asking if she grew up in a house with no cussing because she never uttered a bad word.

Well, my dad's a construction worker...

Coworker answers... Oh, knowingly...

But my mom... she can talk flies off a gut pile...

In my experience, most folks pushing the squeaky clean lifestyle have a chitload of skeletons in their closets and or are pretty rotten themselves.

Some folks are more expresive than others.

Some have had enough of the BS and just call em like they see em.

Yes, it can be a bad habit.

Psuedo intellects have tried to condemn some for the usage.

Just because you dont cuss, that doesnt mean you are smart or decent. Just means you dont cuss.

Do agree, that the power of words may be lost when over used.

I know who and what I am, Fuqk'em.

When I was a teen I fell in love with this girl and her father hated me and my long hair, I was never anything but polite to this man and he did everything to break us up. He finally succeeded by telling his daughter that he would never talk to her again if she continued to see me. a few years later she married a guy that beat the hell out of her several times, the last time he damn near killed her.

A few years after that I saw him and made a point to tell him that I had intended on marrying his daughter and taking care of her for the rest of her life but instead he fuqked all that up and damn near got his daughter killed. he hung his head, said nothing and walked away. I sincerely hope he suffered.

I understand she has remarried and I hope she is doing well, despite her father, she was a very selfless and giving person.

Moral of the story is, Don't judge a book by it's cover.

In science groups it was pretty clean cut.

In manufacturing everybody cussed.

Odd, the little old ladies in the lab had a " swear jar ".
My adhesives expert came in one day and slapped a 5 on the table ( F word cost a quarter ).

It was gonna be a loud n funny day!

And they let him rant and rave and F bomb here and there.

See the little church ladies claimed offense, but that swear jar was what kept the candy dish full.

And most of the little church gals werent so little.

First saw the "F" word at about 4-5 years old, walking down the back street to the main drag where I grew up with Mom and Dad. Maybe to get a pizza or something. Painted in big red letters on a loading dock on the back of a building there. Seemed like letters as tall as I was. I was a compulsive reader even at that age, and was taught "phonics", so I sounded it out in my little kid's brain, then asked the folks what does F,,K mean?

I think I got whacked and some soap to taste when we got home and told to never say that again.

The old man rarely used much more than "damn, Jesus Mary and Joseph, and very very very rarely gotdammit.

Me, I turned pro before high school.

Was working on a car in the driveway of a place the wife and I were renting, maybe a year or two after we got together. I let loose with a string of expletives the likes of which are rarely heard nowadays.

She remarked "I have never heard anyone string together so many different cuss words in one sentence. And it even made sense"

That my fellows, is the way to cuss when needed.

Nice story. Should've had a haircut and a bath, hippie. JK bro'. Your story is familiar, but the girl's dad hated gooks. Ended up knocked up and marrying a two-bit soldier in the Irish mob. Rosanne killed herself with heroin before she turned 40. She was my first love @ 15. Rest easy, Rosy.

People who cruse nearly every time they speak seem like Jr high-school kids in the locker room trying to sound "grown up". Obviously they are not.

They seem very juvenile and unintelligent, as if they were stunted, yet they don't know it and have no idea how idiotic they sound. It's not the "f-word" or some trashy words said when they fit the circumstance that is telling, but the fact they can't seem to communicate without them. I know some boys and a few girls who can't tell you how to make pan-cakes or give directions to a corner market without trying to impress you with cruse words said 1-4 times in every sentence.

It may be other things.......but it's not impressive.

They sound like un-parented 12 year old ghetto rats. As if they aspire to someday be "as cool" as a 12 year old from Harlem, a street rat who could have a father chosen from any one of 70 males who used their willing mother. No one ever taught them any better and they seem to think being that low is an accomplishment.
Nothing like "setting the bar high" huh?

HUMANS
Swearing Is Actually a Sign of More Intelligence - Not Less - Say Scientists
RICHARD STEPHENS, THE CONVERSATION
2 FEBRUARY 2017

The use of obscene or taboo language - or swearing, as it’s more commonly known - is often seen as a sign that the speaker lacks vocabulary, cannot express themselves in a less offensive way, or even lacks intelligence.

Studies have shown, however, that swearing may in fact display a more, rather than less, intelligent use of language.

While swearing can become a habit, we choose to swear in different contexts and for different purposes: for linguistic effect, to convey emotion, for laughs, or perhaps even to be deliberately nasty.

Psychologists interested in when and why people swear try to look past the stereotype that swearing is the language of the unintelligent and illiterate.

In fact, a study by psychologists from Marist College found links between how fluent a person is in the English language and how fluent they are in swearing.

The former - verbal fluency - can be measured by asking volunteers to think of as many words beginning with a certain letter of the alphabet as they can in 1 minute.

People with greater language skills can generally think of more examples in the allotted time. Based on this approach, the researchers created the swearing fluency task. This task requires volunteers to list as many different swear words as they can think of in 1 minute.

By comparing scores from both the verbal and swearing fluency tasks, it was found that the people who scored highest on the verbal fluency test also tended to do best on the swearing fluency task. The weakest in the verbal fluency test also did poorly on the swearing fluency task.

What this correlation suggests is that swearing isn’t simply a sign of language poverty, lack of general vocabulary, or low intelligence.

Instead, swearing appears to be a feature of language that an articulate speaker can use in order to communicate with maximum effectiveness. And actually, some uses of swearing go beyond just communication.

What's it worth? Typical article from some Psycho - first para sets an assumed stage ("it often seems") and second para opens the gambit ("studies have shown - - - may in fact") and then on to the theory presented toward convincing.

Normal SUP-SUP principle at work.

Cussing is always appropriate in life or death situations, moving heavy objects that take all of ones strength, breaking nuts loose from corroded bolts, or throwing down the gloves prior to a fist fight.

I do not, however, appreciate cussing in common language as it looses it's effectiveness and I never appreciate hearing a lady cuss.

Carry on!

Haven’t said the GD word in 5 years, not since I locked myself out of the house when I was on crutches for the third or fourth time. The spare key is down by the barn on a tree, exhausted me to go down there on them SOB’s. It had been at least ten years before that.

I've never understood the constant use of the "f" word except for using it for the real meaning. I lived in Baton Rouge back in the early 90's. It seemed like you weren't able to grow out of puberty unless you could use it five times in the same sentence. To some it was more of a competition to who could use it the most and how creative they could be with it.

But of course 90% of the idiots that fill up those big buildings every Sunday morning will gleefully tell you it's a sin.

Taking the Lord's name in vain means you're using people's faith and belief in God to do evil things. Examples of this would be convincing minors to suck your dick in the name of the Lord (Dave Koresh) or to swindle people out of their money (Jimmy Swaggart) or to commit heinous acts by presenting yourself as a prophet that can communicate with God directly (Jim Jones.) It can also mean to blaspheme God. i.e. "He is not the one true God."

If people actually read the God damned Bible, they would know this type of schit.

The replies are diverse – ranging from it’s OK – it’s nobody’s business – I don't trust or won’t associate with anyone who does not use it – it exposes illiteracy and indicates low class – you should not use it in certain circumstances – nasty habit and shows you have no self-control – it is not Christ-like and indicates sinfulness, etc., etc..

More analytical (maybe) types chose to give rather elaborate interpretation of Scripture (maybe self-serving?) – cite scientific studies claiming that use of the F word indicates superior intellect – say it’s offensiveness is the same as prosperity theology – doesn’t deserve holier than thou judging – explain the difference between cussing and cursing – handy way to be edgy, defy societal norms and attack hypocrisy – those who don’t like it are fake-ass Christians (that is forbidden judging and is cursing according to a definition) – and so forth.

What’s new? Most expect the freedom to say anything they wish. Some wish to offend with speech. Others choose to not listen to vulgarity. Some say it is good for their expression. Some say it denotes low character.

Some say it is none of your business if I use it, but it is my business to put you down you if you don’t like it. Some want to use the “literature” to support it, some want to redefine certain literature for similar reasons. Some who use it seem defensive and need/seek justification. Others see no available justification. Etc.

I do wonder about the intent of the OP and what may have been expected.

That’s a ridiculous comparison.

The same could be said about a word and the context of it’s use.

Great looking pups...Who bred your bitch? Vs. Your wife’s a hot bitch, I’d like to breed her.

Calling the spoken word just “a sound” ignores that it is intended to communicate an idea. A gesture, likewise, is more than a hand movement. The OP will get it. He’s not a moron.

Edited to add: Your point about context is well taken. I agree.
Posted By: Beaver10 Re: Cursing - 05/08/21
You’re making this about the intention of a word. Which, obviously, can be used passively or aggressively.

The majority here, speaking against the swear words, aren’t speaking about how the word is being used, but, rather it’s being used at all.

In the long run it can be better to just cuss and get it over with Jim.

Let me explain myself.

(The following is a 100% true life story)

Way back when I was in my late 20's, I took in 2 disadvantaged youths.
They'd come from fcked up homes with fcked up parents.
They were both in their mid-teens, It seemed all they needed was a roof over their heads some food and a little guidance to get along in life.

Both were in good physical shape and strong.
I was feverishly flippin' old houses at the time and figured I could get cheap labor while teaching these boys a trade, win, win.

Right away I found nothing could pizz me off more than 2 wayward teen boys, I had a tendency to cuss at them as a result.

Like you Jim, I felt bad about it.
Calling a kid who might not really know who their father might be a little basterd or a son of a bitch was just wrong.
I had to get away from it, I had to righten my ways.

I decided I needed a strong key word that could replace every cuss word in my vocabulary. It had to be a good word and I had to be able to commit it to permanent memory.

I thought long and hard on what word would work and I came up with 'Cowboy',
The word 'Cowboy' holds special meaning, it's emotionally burned into me.

You see, I had this gal staying at the house once that had a cat named 'Cowboy' that she dearly loved, I'm not much on cats but she came with the cat and at the time she seemed worth putting up with a cat to have her around.

All was well up until one snowy azzed day when I was backing the truck outta the yard to run into town and ran over her cat.

I didn't even know I'd run him over until I got back from town and seen him laying in the track my truck had left in the snow.

Cowboy was dead as a hammer and there was no denying I'd killed him.

I scarfed him up and took him up into the treeline to hide him.

This was my first mistake.

I already felt bad about killing him and lieing about it then I had to spent the next two days feeling worse as I watched this gal try to find him.

I fessed up, told her what had happened, I came clean.

Then she wanted me to go get him so we could bury him. Fair enough, I grabbed a old boot box tossed it in the truck and headed up to where I'd tossed him in the timber.
Soon as I got close to the spot I knew I was in trouble, there was pieces of cat everywhere. The coyotes had gotten to him and there was cat fur all over the place.

I drove around a little bit thinking of what to do.
Finally I decided and grabbed an appropriate sized rock, wrapped it in a old shirt and put it in the box.

Thank God she didn't want to see him, we buried the rock in the box just off the driveway and made a wooden cross with RIP Cowboy on it.

I'd lied again.

I'm reminded of this double lie I told every time I return to that property and drive by the rock in the box to this day.

I'll never forget 'Cowboy', that was my word that would replace all cuss words.

I used it for years, it worked marvelously with the boys, they didn't have a clue what was on my mind when I'd scream 'Cowboy' when I'd bitch them out.
It actually worked way to well.

You see, years later, myself and a couple other investors bought a apartment complex that had a swimming pool.

I go cruising by one day to check on the place and the guy we had managing it told me about half our pool furnishings had been stolen the night before.

I took a walk around, all the apartments had sliding glass doors in the back and you could pretty much see into most the units. Didn't take long and I see all our stuff in this apartment, tables, lounge chairs, regular chairs, all of it.
I was pizzed, I hate being stolen from, I headed around to the front door and loudly pounded on it.

This heavy set, African American young man answered the door.
I went off, I told him to get our stuff back to the pool ASAP. He came back with a smartazzed reply.
I blew my top, first words outta my mouth were "LISTEN COWBOY" and off on a rant I went.
Our furnishings made their way back to the pool area.

Two weeks later I got a certified letter in the mail, I was being sued.

It was from the lawyer father of the heavy set African American, pool furniture stealing youth.
I recognized the name right away, he mailed his sons rent payment in the same envelope every month.
He was suing me for verbally attacking his son with racial slurs.

He figured the term 'Cowboy' was referencing his fat azzed sons weight condition (cow) and the fact that he was black as the ace of spades (boy) which was a popular racial term in the day.

I had to hire a lawyer.

Just to keep a long story short, we all got together for a preliminary legal meeting and hashed it out.
I told the same story I've told here and had one of the boys I'd called 'Cowboy' for years and even photos of the cross over the fckin' cats grave with me for the meeting.

The truth set me free.

So Jim, in the long run just cuss and get it over with, just never tell a lie.

You might be correct - but I don't tally such aspects - simply have a penchant for trying to get it right, fully described/explained. And, vocabulary exercise is refreshing. Sometimes inadvertently feeds the odd and ugly needs of who those who like to pick nits or try to degrade others.

This guy must be miserable - usually trying to be the class clown but, typically, failing to cover his deficiencies with the deprecatory comments. Makes stuff up, apparently trying for effect through exaggeration and lying. Usually tries to tell you what someone said - but lies - they never did. I did work with a lot of folks in various settings - some of those educational - enough to discern that a guy like this is a sorry mess. Some here seem to appreciate him - all well and good. Once saw written on a chalkboard - "you are what you consume".

Thanks for the reply and explanation. Beaver10 had a thought, but apparently missed the mark with regard to your purpose. Observation of the various posts has been interesting.

I am not smart enough to explain what you wonder "how" but, in general, people condition themselves to social norms, behavior standards, higher aspirations, social niceties, etc., etc. through the strength of efforts by loving parents/families and the qualities/influences of those they choose to be their friends. Sometimes their spiritual beliefs have such influences. For certain, we all are free to make our choices, set our own discretionary standards, display who we are, etc. "telle est la vie humaine"

Thanks, again, for explaining.

It can also mean to blaspheme God. i.e. "He is not the one true God."

Odd post. Seems like it's not in the "reading" - it's in the interpretation and personal understanding. The relative quality of such may give what you ultimately cite.

Exactly. When I stub my toe on the wife’s tread mill at 3am trying to let the stupid dog out and yell “Fugg!” I’m not talking about intercourse. When I say “no [bleep]?” I’m not talking about a bowel movement. When one the idiots on the crew hits my brand new truck with the forklift and I yell out “GOD DAMNIT!!!” (True story by the way) I’m not asking God to damn him.

Odd post. Seems like it's not in the "reading" - it's in the interpretation and personal understanding. The relative quality of such may give what you ultimately cite.
Realize that you’re replying to Flave, the drunkard and it all becomes clear as to how and why.
The fact that some of you retards are ignorant to how sharp he is, is never not amusing. I never heard a grown man use the f word until I went out west and started working ranches in my teens. Plenty of [bleep] and damn, but never fugk. Gotta admit I use it more often than I ought to.
Maybe I am quite ignorant about some things, but have never doubted that the fellow is sharp. Having sharp tools and quick skills is one thing, how they are applied is another.

Talk like that in a Court room and see what it gets you.

Old Coot,

Show me where Wabigoon made a comment relating to profanity in a court room.

Thanks.

I generally choose my words reasonably carefully, so if I perchance manage to be profane it is because I really mean it.

I don't care.

I don't care what people do or say.

I don't care what others think of me or how I did it.

If I did, and listened to all those blowhards, I wouldn't be where I am today.

You should have just called the cops and had the groid busted.

It’s a part of language. Like most any language, it can be artful and it can be coarse.

One of the funniest stories I’ve heard was told to me by a man to whom Jesus appeared and spoke.
Rest assured that Jesus does in fact drop F bombs.

Good. If the subject (religion) were banished from this wide open discussion forum...as some would have it...you wouldn’t have even seen the edifying posts to which you referred. I gain some valuable insight from guys here...including those who normally don’t routinely post on the religious threads, and including those who don’t profess to be Christians...there are some insightful men here.
