Hot lunch on a cold day. Cook a scrambled egg in it while it bubbles. Or, I’ll run a hard cooked egg through an egg slicer and add it on top with some Frank’s.

I was on a train from San Diego to OC a year ago. Some homeless guy sat across from me. He digs two ramen noodle packs out of his backpack, and proceeds to eat them uncooked. I guess its not an uncommon way to munch them. The bum then got on his phone. His conversation was hysterical, didn’t know where he was or what stop he was at even though the stops popup on a screen.

Nope, no argument here.
Staple at our place. I don't even look at the grocery bill anymore. It's horrifying what two boys can do to a refrigerator full of food. They never stop eating. Never.

I pound on the bag to break 'em up. "Scramble" in 2 or 3 eggs while it's a cookin'. When it's done I crunch up a bunch of saltines to make some "mush" - flashback to eatin' with my grampa with his dentures removed.

I've tried it both ways, and a slow simmer to tenderize the veggies doesn't really hurt the texture of the noodles. Just don't let a rolling boil get going. A flame war or two on the fire is just about the right amount of cooking time!
I can honesty say, never ate it in 42 years walking the earth.

Ramen noodles without that damn flavor pack. Ramen noodles and a jar of chicken or beef bullion fed me many a time. A little chopped onion all the better.

Both Ramen and Cup O Soup around here.
A little Slap Ya Momma gives it a bit of kick as well.
I still wanna know about the little chink that peels the tiny shrimps in the cup of soups, must have a micro set of dick skinners on his hands!
Never discovered those until I was about 35. A cutting board with some leftover meat, onions, mushrooms, celery, carrots, etc with 2 minutes and 40 seconds in the microwave, and I had a pretty good lunch.
There's enough salt in that stuff to de-ice roads in the arctic regions.
Couple packages of one of the spicy varieties, break the noodles up good, add a tablespoon of butter or margarine, a tablespoon or two of dried onion bits, small can of mushrooms along with juice, dash or two creole seasoning, a little garlic and curry powder and both packs of the seasoning that comes with noodles. Add enough water to cover. Microwave for around 3 +/- minutes.

Knorr instant pasta is pretty good stuff. One of my quickie meals is a pack of Knorr noodles, some broccoli, a can of tuna, and a can of mushroom soup.
Boil the noodles and the broccoli, chop up the broccoli, then put the noodles and broccoli in an oven proof dish, stir in the can of tuna and the mushroom soup,...bake it for a while.
About $4.50 for more than you can eat at one setting.
This stuff.

Real ramen is like in Kamo Gari's pictures, it's got very little in common with the instant packages we have in the U.S. A lot of Japanese noodle shops make their noodles in house every day. A bowl of spicy ramen with pork on top with a half dozen gyoza and a beer is a pretty heavenly meal.
I'm in Japan right now but unfortunately because of Covid rules I'm restricted to the hotel. There are a half dozen noodle shops within a couple blocks of me but I can't go to them. Kamo Gari's pictures have my mouth watering.

Ever check the sodium content in that stuff. One serving is your sodium limit for the day.
Ramen was my lunch, along with a yogurt, at work for years. I didn't have time to actually take a lunch break, so it worked well and was cheap. Folks were giving me cook books for it, and I got several cases from them when I retired 2 years ago. They're still sitting on the shelf and I won't eat it again as long as I live.

https://ippudo-us.com/menu/Hey CW. Thanks for the response. Are you under the newer 4 or 7 day mandatory Q restriction on this trip post arrival? My wife hasn't been willing to deal with the whole Q requirement nonsense so hasn't been to get back to see her family in Tokyo for over two years. Are you at Narita or Haneda, or in a different part of the country?
As far as getting ramen or any other, quality sit down grub, might I suggest trying to get your hotel staff/concierge to order something local for you to be delivered to your cell, I man room?
Many, if not most little mom and pop type neighborhood places around metro Tokyo will deliver daily. As you probably know, many of those guys you see zooming around town in white aprons driving the 2 and 3 wheeled motorized scooters/mopeds are delivering food, including steaming hot bowls of ramen. My guess is they'll deliver food to your hotel no problem--though with the COVID silliness not sure. The only thing is that the places that deliver ramen/udon type stuff require that you leave the clean bowls for them when you're done so they can pick them up after. These old school type places will prepare and send you hot food out using real dishes and bowls, not plastic recyclable type stuff that goes in the trash. Of course, getting bento boxes delivered could maybe hold you over until you're 'cleared' and can head out and eat as you please.
Safe travels and eat up. And yes, Ippudo is pretty damned good. Hitting a ramen joint at 2am-4am after a night of fun and before the first train in the morning is a thing, and has been since I was introduced to the pastime in the 80s. Loading up on good hot food like ramen seems to help keep the Japanese hangover monster at bay when he shows up with the sunrise...

Osaka, but I fly into Narita often too.
As flight crew we've got crew exemptions to the standard procedures in most places. In Japan we're restricted to the hotel the whole time we're there. We don't have to stay in the room but we can't leave our designated hotel. That's actually a lot better than most other places in Asia where we're confined to a room lockdown, no stepping outside the room from arrival to departure. Without special exemptions for aircrew air commerce would basically grind to a halt so the exemptions to normal quarantine rules are necessary if they want to keep the planes moving. You're right that most of the noodle houses would deliver, and Uber eats has gotten pretty big in Japan also. A quick check of it in Osaka shows plenty of Ramen offerings. I like going into the noodle houses themselves though, they have kind of a Waffle House feel to them (I mean that in a good way). I'm back in the U.S. now and just ate in the hotel restaurants when I was there, they were pretty good in their own right.

Understood. Completely. There's something special about watching folks, many with a lifetime worth of experience at perfecting particular dishes putting together a special meal right in front of you. Even with things as simple as ramen joints. Obviously, you get it. A big part of the enjoyment of eating out is being there. The smells, the sounds, the anticipation...The beer buzz kicking in and checking out the bombshell that just got seated over there and...never mind.
Cheers, sir.
P.S. You mentioned that aside from salmon and halibut and a few others things, Pacific ocean seafood sucks? I'm confused.
That don't look too ramen-ish to me.
Kamo-
I always find your write ups and pictorials enjoyable. This time I’m a little pissed off as all that food looks amazing, and I’m sitting here not able to taste a dammed thing. When my taste buds reappear- ramen is high on the long list of things I’m looking forward to tasting.

Try to keep up, Fats. Part of the thread morphed into the actually being there 'experience' as part of enjoying tasty things, those even as pedestrian as a bowl of hot noodles. The concept kind of transcends the whole 'It's 3AM? Oh Snap, I'm Hammered Proper Boys, Let's Do a Cup Noodle!' thing. Make sense?

Thanks, Robert. Proper, practically made-to-order ramen is out of this world. As is so often the case, this thread has morphed. INSTANT 'ramen' noodles has zero to do with freshly made noodles prepared to perfection by someone who knows what good food means. As is so often the case, not everything is black and white.
Minani kanpai.
Ate a ton of them, when I was stationed in Taiwan 71/72. 1 1/2 cents per package. Drop a raw egg on top after it is cooked, stir, put a lid on top and wait a minute. Amazing eats for the price.
Leighton never disappoints !
Strangely enough... make sure to look up Ramen noodles on Youtube... the Asian people do a lot of different things with them and make some really good dishes... Most not even using the spice packets...
Ippudo is a big ramen chain in Japan and they're pretty good. It looks like they've opened a couple of restaurants in the U.S.

Hilarious pair of Ozzies on a stag hunt in Hokkaido a few years back. Drunken buggers but serious about the hunt and good people.

I’ll take 2x of each, please.
