Polar Brand
Smoked Brisling Sardines.
Inexpensive and yummylicious.
Saltines for a perfect combo.
With a touch of Tabasco.
Mmmm
Butter bread, get all the mustard.
Not sardines, try the Polar salmon fillet.đđđ
SometimesâŠ.but sometimes anchovies while other times herring works best or even squid. It really depends on what the fish are feeding on.

Thats nastyass farmed fish.
Skinless boneless sardines are where its at.
The big ones in tomato sauce in the 1-pound oval cans. The small ones are possum bait for a live catch trap!
King Oscar.
Extra Virgin Olive oil or mustard.
Crackers and a shake of Frank's Red Hit make it veddy gooda!!
I really like herring filets but eating eyeballs and gills stops me cold
Love to eat them.......hate to burp them up an hour later.
King Oscar.

King Oscar is at the top in my book, also. Right from the can with crackers, or mashed up with mustard, pickle relish and hot sauce then spread on bread.
There's a brand of herring fillets that comes either in tomato sauce or a white wine and dill creamy sauce. Outstanding.

I had two cans yesterday for lunch. Excellent!
Love sardines, good for heart health! Can never find the small cans with tomato sauce though.
King Oscar Mediterranean Sardines are my favorite. I buy them by the case.

I like those in the oval cans with tomato sauce but can't find them in my area anymore. What store you buy them at?
skinless boneless sardines in water
In Louisiana hot sauce....
The ones packed in mustard or just in oil, have to have them with saltine crackers. This reminds me I have not had them in years, will put them on my deer camp packing list...Joe
Particularly good on a day where I want the Redhead to leave me alone.....
That's about all I can do for a tinned peel top fish snack.
The ones in hot sauces and mustard sauces.
And then once every 5 or 6 years if I get a strange craving for them.
I like em, my wife thinks they stink.
I like them in olive oil or with jalapeños.
Saltines for a perfect combo.
I see that your taste in hors d'oeuvres is as good as your taste in music. Saltines for the win , nuthin' better.
My paternal grandma (1894-1994) "loved" sardines.
My dad (1920-1981) "loved" sardines.
My paternal grandpa (1893-1973/WWI vet) would buy sardines for them, but absolutely "refused" to allow grandma or dad to open a can of sardines in the house! đ€Ł
About as close as I can get to sardines is the "Kipper Snacks" (kippered [whatever that is?] herring). Can't recall the brand, but I can recognize it when I see it.
My mom fed us "salmon croquets" quite often (actually canned mackerel) as kids. We fed our kids lot's of it.
Won't eat that canned crap today.
When I fished Alaska (Kodiak) and came home with salmon, the wife and me would marinate fillets overnight and grill them. Anything left over, we made salmon patties!
My mom would have blushed! Damn, those things are good! đ
Love sardines, good for heart health! Can never find the small cans with tomato sauce though.

Ebay is your friend- - - -buy 'em by the case to cut down on shipping costs. Haven't tried the Goya brand yet, but they're considerably less expensive than other brands, and other Goya foods are very good quality.
Smell reminds me of when I forgot to wash out the bait well on my boat.
Great protein that fits in you wallet pocket, big fan here and you don't ever have to shave because nobody wants any!
I like the Beach Cliff brand. Big ones cut in half will cover a saltine cracker. Pour the oil off then douse them with malt vinegar. Good eatinâ!

Love the $hit outa MV on Fish n chips.
Always a few cans in the pantry. King Oscar brand usually.
I just tried these based on your recommendation. Damned good stuff!
In oil or tomato sauce with raw onions and French bread.

When the horn blew my grandmother and all the other ladies in town went to the factory to pack sardines.
I remember when the boiler blew up when Port Clyde Packing burned down, my brothers and sisters and I were about 1/2 mile away watching from Marshal Point, it broke windows a mile away.

I just found some Mediterranean chicken of the sea mix I'm going to have to try that out I did that one yet
Try some good ones from Portugal or Spain some time.
Or Latvia?
You folks aren't listening (reading?)
These are the bomb. 2 layer small ones like the best King Oscar ones. I was a fan of the King for years, now they're overpriced when I can get these which are essentially the same but less expensive.
Yes, two boxes of them, they're that good.
The Riga Gold ones one either side are really good too, either the round cans on the left or the oblong ones on the right. There's a box with those "boneless, skinless, in water" ones from the Costco there...............................they've been there a long time................nowhere near as tasty as the Polar or Riga Gold.
I hope I remember to get a can out for lunch tomorrow.................but.........................the wife just made a curry meatloaf tonight which we haven't even gotten into. It smelled wonderful while it baked.
Decisions, decisions.
Oh, that's not a picture. You're looking at the sardines there.Plastic lid is the only drawback I can see. Might not store for 10 years like a good can will.
Boneless fillets for my sensitive pallette. Costco on sale the other day....

Dehead and pull the guts out Or, just pull the gills and guts out and leave the head.
Roll, dip or coat in your favorite batter/breading stuff.
Fry until golden brown.
Don't think I've ever pulled them out of the freezer to cook, shouldn't be too hard for an Eskimo fella to figure out how to deal with frozen fish though.
Smoked smelt from Grandpa and Grandma is a distant memory. I picked some up in Vancouver WA from an E European deli several moons ago. Didn't try prats.
I lost my love for bone in a couple years back when I opened a cheap cheap cheap Grocery Outlet can that'd been bouncing around in the truck for several seasons. Putrid mush....
I don't do mackerel either.

Yeah, I've had a few things from Spain that came in a nice glass jar.

But, I understand the complete turn off from something, once it happens there's no going back. I got that way with tequila/mescal/aquardiente a few years before I stopped drinking even. The smell would make me start to retch. Too much of a good thing I guess.

Did you have your food box over the back axles on an empty set of doubles??? Looks like you went down to the local Ace Hdwr and strapped it in the paint shaker
OH, them were Polack sardines. Latvian or Spanish ones would have never done that.
You shouldn't have eaten that.
So, I went boneless skinless after seeing that.... I am convinced to try some higher grade stuff now though, Spanish maybe or that two layer stuff.

Smoked Roundheads here... and Tanner Blues.
Shark jerky in November/December.
Shrimp season starts soon. Oyster already in (but smoked/oiled oysters are nasty).
Nothing like the taste of a rotten sardine....
Did a bit of sampling last nightâŠ.
The top two are from Costco and I feel are the best sardines on the market. Nice and firm and flavorful.
I bought some of the king Oscar as so many here recommend them as top tier but man I gotta say I was very disappointed.
Small fish, soft, mushy and fishy tasting
I wouldnât eat them if they were free to be honest
Sam Olson nailed it. Perfect lunch or snack.
Sardines and saltines.
John, you'd not love, canned Jackmackerel.
Had some with crackers a couple of days ago.
Ya ainât lived until youâve had a genuine Scottish kipper, in Inveraray Argyll yet, on the shore of Loch Fine. Fattiest, most oily fish I ever ate.
Dunno where that photo is but hereâs my present ration, two each week. All the way from Poland. Iâll be pi$$ed if Putin fuggs this up.

Small fish because you bought the can with small fish, says so right on the front of the wrapper.
The can I am eating now has firm little fishes. Yes small but I knew that from looking at the can. They make em in larger fish sizes with less per can.
Also, those others are boneless and skinless. May make a difference, dunno, never had boneless skinless minners.
I like them on crackers spread with jif peanut butter. Truck lunch

I eat these kippered herring filets occasionally. I can't take the salt like I used to, and these are low in sodium at 100mg (4% DV).

The King Oscar Skinless/Boneless in olive oil are the same thing as the Season brand. Same can, same country of origin, different box wrapper. Bumble Bee has the same ones as well, probably others not available here.
Yes, thats a good plant for sardines(Morocco). Polish plant sardines kinda suck cause there's no smoke and not much goes into the prep.
Every now and then the crunchy bone in ones are nice for a change up, I think they are Admirals.
I won't eat anything from Asia.
I love tinned seafood. I love dried seafood. As long as the quality is there, I'd happily survive on the stuff.
As another posted, many other nations from Asia to Europe and beyond have outstanding seafood tinned/other products. We keep a significant stash around always. Straight out of the can/bag, tossed on crackers, added to soups or ever better, served on rice or pasta and heated, whatever. I'll not be without a bunch in the house.
Mrs. KG has standing orders to bring back as much as she can carry from any place she travels to on business. Portugal and Spain have fantastic examples-- some seen below-- as do most any Euro nation. Excellent seafood products go far beyond sardines. Herring, tuna, salmon, crab, mackerel, anchovies, squid, oysters, clams, octopus and so much more. Packaged in oils, tomatoes, chili sauce, mustard, whatever. Food of the Gods.
These look good. I'll be on the lookout

My favourite as well. They make'em just one hr down the road from here.
I found a sealed can of them in a lake in the Yukon during a fly-in hunt in 1998. A bear had torn the outfitter's camp apart looking for food. He missed getting his teeth into that can.

StxHunter made a post about these a few weeks ago. Odered some on Amazon and they are the bomb. Really good!!
I will order some :o) Thanks Skankhunt42
UPDATE: $5.46 PER 3.78 OZ CAN............. I Will stick with the beautiful Smoked Sardines I found for <$2.00 per can lol
Haha I've been getting them for $2.31 (US) a can. They're showing unavailable now. Most of the Amazon places they're around 32 for a 12 pack. I probably wouldn't pay $3.00 a can for them but at $2.31 they're a bargain. They are close to 3 bucks at Walmart.
With all this talk of Sardines, I broke down and bought these made by a Canadian Company on the East Coast, and Man Were They Ever Delicious! Give them a try you will be pleasantly surprised!
Cheers ~

$2.89 a can here. always have a few cans in the pantry.
I buy the skinless, boneless, add garlic olive oil, salt and pepper and a cold beer on the side!
I like the Wal-Mart Brand(Great Value) especially the ones in Louisianna Hot sauce.
Tried the Beach Cliff and they are alright but fall apart just trying to get one out of the can.
I like sardines but prefer the kipper snacks. I think the smoked flavor is what I like about them.
Grabbed a can of king Oscar today for lunch.
I'll look for the Brunswick brand next time I'm at the store, I haven't had them for a long time. I'd be curious how they stack up to the king oscar.
Grew up in England eating Kippers on toast.... with a little vinegar.

The fresh smoked (not frozen) kippers are 2nd to none compared to any canned fish listed in this thread but are extremely hard to find away from the source.
We did some work on Grand Manan Island a few years ago on some of the public wharfs and were given some by the fellow there that looks after the wharfs. He smoked them himself. I warmed them on a pc of tinfoil on the grill and ate them with eggs and toast. ..... WOW.
when considering going down town on a strange snatch, I always recommend a 2 finger check. but if you eat sardines, all pu$$$ y is edible.

Everybody can see you are trying way too hard.
There used to be a diner in Dillon, MT where they served smoked trout with eggs for breakfast. It was exquisite. That's as close to real English breakfast kippers as I'll ever get, probably.

That is always a good breakfast. Sometimes I take a kipper snack and scramble them with eggs.

Malt vinegar?
I'm usually open to trying new foods but have never tried sardines. My grandma used to eat them and they grossed us out as kids. Now that I'm old I'll have to step up and try them. I cook with fish sauce a lot and love sushi, sashimi, and ceviche. Just still haven't tried sardines. Costco had big packs of them on sale the other day and I though if I liked them they'd be a good addition to food storage.

When this thread started, I was dissing Sardines.
The other day I said what the heck and bought 4 cans when I was at Walmart. Not the whole sardines with the spines in them but Smoked Boneless Brunswick Sardine Fillets.
I just had another can of them with a Baguette for breakfast, man are they ever Delicious lol. Give these puppies a try, you will be happy you did, and way better then canned Tuna! Cheers ~

All this & I had to raid the cabinets. Found 1 single can of smoked oysters. Get the hot sauce & crackers. Memory poor, the first reminded me that my dislike of smoked stuff wasn't the meat, but the piss poor smoke. Imitation that taste like it was smoked with doty wood.
Oyster 1, not good. #2, somthin ain't right. See streaks of yellow slime on remaining oysters, check date on can, 2007. Damnit! eat 4 Zestas & hope for the best.
A frugal sort I are, I give the outdoor cat the rest. He wouldn't touch them, bad sign..
Four hours later, it looks like I've dodged a bullet

Happy to hear that there are zero detrimental effects!

Thanks Mr. Math. I check ruthlessly every store we go to for smoked oysters only to find made in China. Not a chance. At the beginning of this thread I ordered some fishy things from Spain and low and behold scallops are really there own animal and not a punch out of some other fish.

How much were the Herring? I paid $1.45 USD for the Sardines, as good as any canned Herring I have had!
Killer
The Brunswick herring was $2.14
The King Oscar mackerel was $3.54
Thatâs American dollars.

Well, boyz, I have to be honest.
If you look at my first posts, I was Anti Sardine, then I went and bought some Smoked Boneless Sardine Fillets.
Well, I was running low on provisions and went to the store to stock up.
First place I went to was too the Canned Fish section and bought a months' worth of my new favorite food, Yeppers, Smoked Boneless Sardine Fillets.
Unbelievable lmao!
Cheers ~
