Somebody on here (and I believe it was tedhorn) stated these were the cat's ass for making a dull knife cut:
https://radakitchenstore.com/collections/featured-best-sellers/products/quick-edge-knife-sharpenerI'll be damned if this isn't the best $7.00 you can spend for a layman's kitchen.
Yes I can put an edge on a knife in a traditional fashion and yes I can use a steel. But this thing flat works and if you want a gift idea...
Dave
I bought my sister-in-law one last year for Christmas.
I'll stick with my Spyderco Sharpmaker.
My Birthday is this month.
It's butter, dude. Dave. Clark. Travis.

What if you are left-handed?
I agree Dave/Travis. I have a Spyderco and love it, but for kitchen knives the RADA is hard to beat and a lot cheaper then the Spyderco. I've used mine for 15 plus years now.
That's a stone with a guide.
This is not comparable to that.
Dave

Yeah I would never be without my Spyderco.
But this thing is far more effective than I thought it'd be.
It's pretty aggressive though. My Dexters may be worn to nubs soon... grin.

+ 100
This is what I use when I need to re-sharpen my blades. Kitchen knives get a few quick licks on a Dexter Diamond sharpener, but any knife of worth gets the Edge Pro.....
I've got an EdgePro too, but for quick kitchen sharpening, this can't be beat:
https://chefschoice.com/product/chefschoice-prontopro-diamond-hone-knife-sharpener-model-4643/The Diamond wheels are a lot better than the all-steel one's of the Quick Edge.

Yeah, but mine was only $7.00....
Ok you cheap bastid, they've even got a $9.99 Diamond model

Well no wonder you're concerned about knife sharpness.

Top of the morning to you Travis, I trust all is aligned in your world.
We've used that very same Rada model for at least 5 years now when we're cutting game. As you've stated it works very well on commercial grade cutlery and it's fast and simple as a bonus.
It could be my imagination, but I almost think it's a tad less aggressive now after 5 years of hard use - but then again if I wasn't so cheap I could cough up another $7 USD and start again could I not?
Oh and I've got a bench belt grinder like Scott has shown in shop where we cut meat and I prefer to use the Rada whenever I can as it's quicker. When I want to start the bevel on a dead edged knife again, then I'll use the belt grinder.
Anyway as always there's many roads to Mecca and all that, but you're right this works well for the price of a couple cups of Seattle coffee....
Lastly Rada knives aren't all bad either though perhaps a tad high in price for what they are.
Have a good weekend Travis - see you in church.
Dwayne
This thing has a carbide v section like the rada, a ceramic v section like the rada as well as square and round ceramic and preset ceramic angles for scissors.
It's simply perfect......and it's 2 oz......and 10 bux.

Top of the morning to you sir, I hope all is well in your part of the world and you're keeping cool enough.
I'm going to try out Rick's new photo thing here for practice, so apologies for the couple "thousand words" here....
So the Rada carbide wheels are for this quality of blade at our house.
Or maybe even these.
Never this one because I'm not even going to admit to myself what I have into it.
Like as not, never these.
Finally I'd think that this wouldn't be appropriate either.
As a random by the way, I have no clue how to make the photos the same size or why some appear larger than others???
Maybe it's just like people and the smaller photos are like me and only 5'5"?
Thanks for letting me practice in Rick's brave new cyber world Barry and have a good weekend!

Same here Dwayne. I have always scoffed at these type of gadgets but my mom wanted to be able to sharpen a knife herself so I bought her one. And myself two...
Five passes with a dull as schit Dexter and it was shaving hair. I believe tedhorn has posted they are a staple in slaughterhouses and commercial kitchens.
Save me a seat. And some of that wine...
Dave
Dave;
Thanks for the reply, I always appreciate it.
I'd think that the thing about the Rada unit being used commercially is that you can dunk it in bleach solution rather easily. Whenever I bleach my bench grinder it's pain to get the bleach out of the bearings and electrical components....
We don't do real wine at our church Dave - long story about that - but seeing as we live in Napa Valley North here there's no trouble picking up a case or two just down the road afterward. That's likely better anyway though as we might snore a bit too loudly if the wine was consumed pre-service instead of post.
No doubt that's part of the grand master plan.
Have a good one sir and careful with that Rada when you're sharpening your cutlass in between repelling the next group of pirates trying to board the raft.
Dwayne
Nice, Dwayne!
Some really nice cutlery in there!
I have a few good knives. Not many. I guess I don't need many for what I do.
Grew up working in my dad's meat packing company. Learned at an early age how to sharpen a knife by hand with a correct bevel. In my experience, nothing beats an edge put on a knife by someone that knows how to hand sharpen a knife.
Thanks Dwayne! Canoeing is on the itinerary today believe it or not.
Take care,
Travis

Interesting. In Idaho we trim/butter the toast with a dull knife.
I don't like grit in my toast nor butter in my sandpaper, but the South thinks different sometimes.

Does the gizmo work like a steel or does it remove metal? Maybe a little of both?
RJY66;
It removes metal for sure as the shavings pile up underneath after a few knives are done.
Dwayne
Does the gizmo work like a steel or does it remove metal? Maybe a little of both?
It removes metal. Lots of it.
I've found a few passes with the gizmo followed by a steel give you one helluvan edge in zero time.
And like Dwayne said you can just throw it in the dishwasher when you're done if using it to butcher.
Dave
I've always liked Rada's knives for the kitchen, I have a few of them. I'll have to throw one of their sharpeners in the drawer too. Thanks Deflave.
Thanks for the info!
Just ordered the 2 pack off Amazon Prime
I am going to take you guys word and give one a try.
They go 3 for $17.59 on Ebay with free shipping.

I'm buying 5. Just so's you bastids know I'm well heeled.
Yep I'm picking up the slack from Spano's absence
But first I have to go check on our livestock (read chickens) 3 acres to cover, I'd best break out the gps
I've heard Dave does not have trouble in that department.
My latest wife left me so I have been crushing the Buds.

Probably.

That sharpener is OK for junk knives you don't use often, but all it's doing is ripping steel from the edge, creating a rougher edge that will grab and cut. Just use a Dexter Russell Steel to touch up when necessary and only sharpen when you absolutely have to. I prefer to sharpen with a DMT stone but only actually have to sharpen kitchen knives rarely. I just use the steel, keeping the edges straight and cutting. Your knives will last a long time with this method.
All steels are not created equally. The Dexter Russel steels are my current favorites of several I've bought. The others have just been junk compared to the DR steels.
What's with the Böker Magnums? Are they on the MAGA plan?
i use those on my rada knives. thats all i butcher with anymore. hard to beat for the price. especially if you only do 2 or 3 deer a year like me.
Ah yes.
A bit of jewel that unexpectedly found its way to my doorstep. A friend wanted it more than me so away it went. But then I ordered more. Apparently.

Yes. They are not a do all. As I stated I'm well versed in sharpening a knife and using a steel.
Agree with you on the Dexter steels. My parents have several.
Dave
Clark, thanks for the tip and link. I'm gonna get some of those for my daughter, wife, DIL. They look easy to use and foolproof in the short run.
For myself, that kind of sharpener seems to change the shape of the blade, and over time, changes it quite a bit. IME if you start with a pretty good blade edge geometry, a dual wheel sharpener works well for several sharpenings, until it shaves off enough edge material to make the blade thicker and thicker, closer and closer to the cutting edge. Maybe this item works differently than others of its ilk and I admit that I have not yet used it. My plan to to make a way for wife and daughter to sharpen knives quickly and easily. Then once or twice a year I'll reshape the shoulder of the blade edge so that they can continue using the little quick sharpen wheel tool.

My butcher knives are the black synthetic handled commercial type, the same used at some of the local processing plants. The double steel wheel sharpener works fast and easy for me. Was never said they were used on the collector blades.

I'll stick with my Spyderco Sharpmaker.

Cept for buttering toast..nothing like having a "sharp" knife.
Thanks
OK, after listening to you guys I ordered one off of ebay for six bucks. To say I am impressed would be an understatement. Going to order some more for gifts.
me as well, my old lady sliced her finger open, was use to her dull knifes.
And here I thought I was the only fool to take Dave's recommendations.
My came in yesterday from E-bay and it does work well on the wife's kitchen knives.
Phil
okay, i suckered in too. is anyone getting a commission on these things?
But i had my inside house servant purchase a rada knife set too.
I try to reward a little bit.

So you're the inspiration behind King Missile's song Detachable Penis?
How many sharpenings before they change the edge geometry so much that it must be completely re-shaped again?
How many sharpenings before they change the edge geometry so much that it must be completely re-shaped again?
I bought on on Clark's recommendation. $7.00 shipped from Amazon...how could you lose? Well, the darn thing works like a Mofo. Would not use it on any nice blades but put a quick shaving sharp edge on a knife it does. I've heard about and seen a lot of claims regarding quick, cheap sharpening tools but this one is as advertised.
As to the question above...I guess time will tell.
RJY66;

They work Ok on semi disposable knives made of fairly soft steel. Don't use them on any knives you want to hang onto for a few decades.
Jerry
How is it differenter than these gizmos, other than being hardened steel rather than carbide/ceramic?
Jayzus that things big! lol
Only way it's quicker is to just SHOW it to the knife, I think!
As a kid, we had one of these in the kitchen. They're OK.
i did all the kitchen knifes then hit them a few licks on my hard Arkansas oil stone and they're razor sharp, old lady sliced her finger open barely touching one.
Thanks 'flave, I grabbed one for my wife to use on her kitchen knives, one less thing for me to piss about with.
Sorry for the Mrs. Roger, but glad they are working for you.

How many sharpening's do you normally achieve before having to re-shape the edge?

Dave
Interesting question and I'm curious how others will answer. On my personal knives I shape the blade geometry every time I sharpen, a little bit to retain the contour(s) and once a knife is sharp, never reshape it again unless somebody else like my wife or kids uses it. My personal hunting knives, never, and keep my knives away from them. I keep a few cheap knives around to loan people... including other hunters.
I'm the official old codger knife sharpener for my extended family, usually working over my married daughter's knives once or maybe twice a year. On those knives I start each sharpening process by renovating the edge geometry.
I'm willing to bet your run of the mill Victorinox kitchen knife will turn into a nub before you had to reshape anything. And it will still cut like crazy.
Time will tell of course.
Dave
this little tool help me reshape a blade that i let some else sharpen. they put too much angle on it and it folded and nicked first time i used. this cleaned it up real quick and i will finish it on the stone.

WHAT DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH SHARPENING A KNIFE?
A NAP? IT'S NOT EVEN NOON YET, YA [bleep]' [bleep].
That one works for a little while, then the knife gets to the point where it does nothing.
Just bought a Ken Onion Worksharp for the boat. See how that goes.
I've been using a diamond steel to touch up fillet knives on the boat
I'm going to have to order a couple of flave's sharpeners to compare.

That has not been my experience in the four years I have been using them. My knives get a couple of light strokes every time I use them.
I've been using a diamond steel to touch up fillet knives on the boat
I'm going to have to order a couple of flave's sharpeners to compare.
I have a few of the diamond steels, and keep one everywhere I need them. They work. They are easier on a blade than the carbide scrapers and work much, much better. Out on a commercial fishing boat I don't know as I would keep a 1/2 inch diameter 1000/1200 grit ceramic rod, but, in the kitchen I like them a lot.
I would never put one of my decent knives on one of the carbide scrapers
Okay, I got my Rada sharpening gizmo in this afternoon. Its freakin amazing for what it is and for the money is a no brainer! First try, I grabbed a dull old Hickory butcher knife out of the drawer and pulled it through about 6 or 7 times until I felt it smooth out a little. To my amazement the thing shaved hair and sliced newspaper, and it probably did not take 30 seconds. This sharpener is MUCH better than other versions such as the yellow one pictured in a previous post and much better than I expected.
Thanks for the tip Flave.
What if you are left-handed?
Not a problem, just get some left-handed stones.......smile
Any time friendo.
That is where they really shine IMO. Softer knives that are in need of attention in short order.
Although I did use it on my TrailerMaster and it made that bitch into a razor blade in short order.
Dave
What knife is that MM?
Travis
I've been using a diamond steel to touch up fillet knives on the boat
I'm going to have to order a couple of flave's sharpeners to compare.
Those are great but I wouldn't consider the Rada a tool for touching up.
Matter of fact one of the kitchen knives I used it on lost a bit of edge and I just hit it with a steel and it's right back.
Dave
I like it. Might need one.
Travis
I got mine from Walmart.com for $65 delivered. Stripped the blade and honed the heck out of it to get the edge I wanted.
I didn't know if I would like it, but I kept coming back to it and figured what the hell. Turns out I really like it for an every day belt knife. I use it all the time.
The issue sheath is ridiculously huge for the size of the knife. I ordered a kydex from 7 Rattles Bushcraft. Perfect.
This is the issue sheath, the Falcon, and the custom kydex with large tek-lok.
Hahaha. Yeah, I can see not caring for that original issue sheath. Jesus Christ.
Never heard of 7 rattles. Do you just send them the knife?
Travis
this is the one i used the rada to reshape. will finish up on the oil stones.
7 Rattles is a small custom shop. Veteran owned business. Pretty much a one-man operation.
The owner has a lot of knives in the shop for forming, I didn't need to send the knife.

Thanks MM. That is helpful.

I have one of the Smith's little $5.00 sharpeners. If you have a knife that gets daily use, these are the cat's ass for sure. My little Smith's ceramic/carbide sharpener gets it sharp enough to sort-of shave with, and that's good enough for my daily pocket knife.
I do not endorse the Smith.
Dave
That one works for a little while, then the knife gets to the point where it does nothing.
Just bought a Ken Onion Worksharp for the boat. See how that goes.
Ken Onion worksharp is good to go. Finally got around to using it this morning.
You fugk around with that thing on a boat?
Dave
Finally got around to trying out the Rada on a few knives last night. Clark wasn't lying. 5 to 6 times each through the wheels and I had them shaving sharp.
My left arm is now bald
Not a problem, just get some left-handed stones.......smile
Everyone knows one should simply flip the stone over and use the other side.
Broke down and order 3 via eBay - good deal - they work. Even the wifey can use it.
I'd like to thank Dave for turning me on to these.
Clark
Give my thanks to Dave, Clark.
You fugk around with that thing on a boat?
Dave
Oh yeah, even in seas on the ocean off the beach. 40ft boat. I process a lot of fish.
How do you " sort-of shave"?

Rooster,
Did you have to use the left handed version to get those sharp enough to shave your left arm or vicey/versie?
I use one of these, probably similar to the Smith's?
http://handysharp.com/However, after reading through this I may have to spend $$$$ on deflaves "gizmo" and MM's knife as I'm hooked and addicted to this kinda crap!

PS, wageslave likes sharp knives for his manscaping duties, to hell with his left arm hair.
How do you " sort-of shave"?
Some way you get them sort-of-pregnant.

I found something similar in some junk I bought from an estate....it was pretty old....I will have to find it and try it out...

The original version of this video took place under a bridge and advised using a stone from underfoot. It's since disappeared and has been replaced with two 'produced' versions.
That flat stone he carries looks so convenient.
Travis
I use a soft and a hard Arkansas stone. Then use a razor strop. Been using the same ones for 50 years on the same Buck knife. Never tried any of that new stuff.
Thanks for that hanco.
I had never heard of Arkansas stones and strops until your post. I'll give them a try some time.

I am too. Just got back from Sam's club where some southern chick did a demonstration for Hessler's Gourmet Series Plus stainless kitchen knives. Came home with the 19 piece set.
Yea, I don't know why he stopped promoting stones found under the Powder Point Bridge. Maybe Arkansas became a sponsor.

You must not have ever gone to Warehouse Club Giant Store Shopping 101. The First Rule of shopping there is:
Never ever stop at the demonstrations of kitchen appliances, air conditioners, vacuum cleaners, or kids swing sets.
It is permissible and even recommended that you "graze" on the food items they are offering you to taste. Change your shirt and wear sunglasses and go back a second time. Whoever said there is no such thing as a free lunch hasn't been to Costco/Sams on the right day!

PS, I'm betting they didn't have one of deflave's gizmos there to sharpen those fancy knives with.
PPS 19 piece set? How many of those can you use at one time? There oughta be a law! Knife control, to stop knife violence! I certainly hope none in that set were the deadly automatic knives. Were any black and have a pistol grip?
If you zoom in it's the brown type.
Contextually, this just made sense.
However, after reading through this I may have to spend $$$$ on deflaves "gizmo" and MM's knife as I'm hooked and addicted to this kinda crap!

I am too. Just got back from Sam's club where some southern chick did a demonstration for Hessler's Gourmet Series Plus stainless kitchen knives.
Came home with the 19 piece set. Rooster, Rooster, Rooster.

All stainless including the handle. We needed new knives so it worked but yeah I hear ya.
Just used one to fillet up a big pork loin into 1" chops for a shindig tomorrow. Injected and marinating in creole butter right now. Will hit the smoker tomorrow afternoon.
I just bought two based on Deflaves endorsment. They do exactly what I wanted ; a tool that gives you a sharp knife very quickly 5-6 strokes. One for home use and another will be in my pocket when dressing out deer. They are small , light very easy to carry and use. The edge I get with a stone and belt is just a little sharper but a lot more work.
I got one, MFer works!!!!
I use a soft and a hard Arkansas stone. Then use a razor strop. Been using the same ones for 50 years on the same Buck knife. Never tried any of that new stuff.
I have worn out a bunch of knives over the last 50 plus years, including a couple Bucks.
I just got email notification that my Arkansas stone was delivered today. I want to use it to finish of the knives I sharpened with the Rada.
Will any old oil work on the stone or do you need a special oil?

It seems like those two methods would be incompatible?

I was just going by what others in this thread said they did after sharpening with the Rada.
I.e. Roger touched up his knife with the Arkansas stone and then cut his wife with it. lol
I use KROIL for everything from honing blades, triggers, and Chronarch fishing reels. Well not quite "everything."
I wouldn't sharpen my hunting knife with it, but it's great for kitchen knives. Gave it to wifey, she won't bother me about steak knives or her kitchen cutlery. She thinks it's great.

Any form of lubrication will work on an Arkansas stone. Depending on grit it may not even be necessary.

I got mine today. I wound up ordering 3 because the shipping on 1 was $6.00. They really work as everyone has said but they remove a lot of metal. 1 for the knife drawer, 1 for my hunting stuff and another because I grew up in the 70's and I can't remember where I leave things.

For us that grew up in the 50s that goes about ....................what was I going to say? Oh yes about double.

Whoa, A lot said in one very short sentence.
Well I'll be damned - I bought one of these things and it actually works! 5 or 6 swipes on a kitchen knife and it's sharp!

I don't think I would word it exactly like that, seeing as most on the 'fire are men. 'course I don't know you that well...😙
Wifey has sharpened all her kitchen stuff. She is happy.
