I use a hard Arkansas stone for doing my knives and the wife's kitchen knives.

I still have the one like that from moms kitchen. Screwed it to a small piece of 1x2 and clamp it in the vise

Next to a drill press a vise is the best kitchen accessories since the dishwasher pistol.

That one works for a little while, then the knife gets to the point where it does nothing.

Just bought a Ken Onion Worksharp for the boat. See how that goes.

I've been using a diamond steel to touch up fillet knives on the boat

I'm going to have to order a couple of flave's sharpeners to compare.

That has not been my experience in the four years I have been using them. My knives get a couple of light strokes every time I use them.

I have a few of the diamond steels, and keep one everywhere I need them. They work. They are easier on a blade than the carbide scrapers and work much, much better. Out on a commercial fishing boat I don't know as I would keep a 1/2 inch diameter 1000/1200 grit ceramic rod, but, in the kitchen I like them a lot.

I would never put one of my decent knives on one of the carbide scrapers

Okay, I got my Rada sharpening gizmo in this afternoon. Its freakin amazing for what it is and for the money is a no brainer! First try, I grabbed a dull old Hickory butcher knife out of the drawer and pulled it through about 6 or 7 times until I felt it smooth out a little. To my amazement the thing shaved hair and sliced newspaper, and it probably did not take 30 seconds. This sharpener is MUCH better than other versions such as the yellow one pictured in a previous post and much better than I expected.
Thanks for the tip Flave.
