How many sharpenings before they change the edge geometry so much that it must be completely re-shaped again?

I bought on on Clark's recommendation. $7.00 shipped from Amazon...how could you lose? Well, the darn thing works like a Mofo. Would not use it on any nice blades but put a quick shaving sharp edge on a knife it does. I've heard about and seen a lot of claims regarding quick, cheap sharpening tools but this one is as advertised.

As to the question above...I guess time will tell.

They work Ok on semi disposable knives made of fairly soft steel. Don't use them on any knives you want to hang onto for a few decades.

How is it differenter than these gizmos, other than being hardened steel rather than carbide/ceramic?

Only way it's quicker is to just SHOW it to the knife, I think!

As a kid, we had one of these in the kitchen. They're OK.

i did all the kitchen knifes then hit them a few licks on my hard Arkansas oil stone and they're razor sharp, old lady sliced her finger open barely touching one.

Thanks 'flave, I grabbed one for my wife to use on her kitchen knives, one less thing for me to piss about with.

Not sure.

How many sharpening's do you normally achieve before having to re-shape the edge?

Interesting question and I'm curious how others will answer. On my personal knives I shape the blade geometry every time I sharpen, a little bit to retain the contour(s) and once a knife is sharp, never reshape it again unless somebody else like my wife or kids uses it. My personal hunting knives, never, and keep my knives away from them. I keep a few cheap knives around to loan people... including other hunters.

I'm the official old codger knife sharpener for my extended family, usually working over my married daughter's knives once or maybe twice a year. On those knives I start each sharpening process by renovating the edge geometry.

I'm willing to bet your run of the mill Victorinox kitchen knife will turn into a nub before you had to reshape anything. And it will still cut like crazy.

Time will tell of course.

this little tool help me reshape a blade that i let some else sharpen. they put too much angle on it and it folded and nicked first time i used. this cleaned it up real quick and i will finish it on the stone.

Thanks again for the tip.
