Simple question, because I really don't know much about bipods. What would be a good choice for
Longer range hunting as well as shooting. In my head i picture something where the legs go out in front
towards the barrel being better than straight up and down. Is there anything like that?

I must admit that I have never used any bipod other than a Harris, but I've always been happy with them.
Posted By: Sheister Re: Best bipod - 02/09/19
Nothing wrong with the Harris bipods. I have one on my rifles every time I go out these days.

The toughest part is picking which one works best for you. They have short ones for prone and longer ones for sitting when you have obstacles to shoot over like grass, blowdowns, etc.... Also, swivel models, 3 section legs as opposed to 2 section legs, etc....

The Ckye Pod really has no equal, not in a single bipod. The ability to vary stance width tops my list of features separating the Ckye Pod from the competition.

$500? I will stick with my Harris and Atlas. It's nice but I don't know I need $500 nice.

The old Sako TRG bipod and its derivatives..
Posted By: horse1 Re: Best bipod - 02/12/19
For actual hunting I prefer the Javelin bipod. It's exceptionally lightweight and doesn't have to be attached to the rifle until you want to use it.

I've got about a dozen Harris of different lengths and configurations and I hate them all. Unless I'm actually shooting, they're in the way to get in/out of a case, in/out of a vehicle, and since they stay attached, they make the rifle balance poorly when you're not shooting off of them.

My thoughts exactly, and why I’ll be acquiring one (Javelin) soon to replace all my others.

horse1 and Dave,

Would either of you guys get the leg extensions for the Javelin so it could be used sitting?

Never laid hands on one myself, but have been looking at them online for awhile now and they look nice.
Posted By: iddave Re: Best bipod - 02/13/19
Lonny,

That's certainly my intention. I'll use mostly for BG hunting of course, but the longer legs should be perfect for doing coyote call/stands.

Dave

p.s. You gets getting as much snow/rain up there as we are in Boise?

Thanks for the info Dave. Prone shooting while hunting just isn't something that can be done much of the time up here due to the vegetation, but sometimes it can be done. So the long leg attachments would be pretty much mandatory in my book.

Yes, we are getting lots of snow and some rain mixed in down low. Mostly snow though and it's piling up. Up until now, the winter had been very mild, which was nice for the critters. This might push them a bit, but hopefully it will start to let up soon.

I have the longest extensions they make on mine. If I want to shoot prone, I'll do so off of my pack. The bipods for me are for sitting/kneeling, when prone isn't an option for whatever reason. Even with the longest legs they're still under 8oz.

I shot my bull elk last fall @ 350yds while kneeling. There was just enough contour to the land that sitting and prone were not viable positions.

I have only used a Harris, but am happy with it. My gunsmith tried selling me something else, that looked nice, but it was too short.

I just picked up a javeline. Pretty good idea and mounting system. I have an atlas too but it is heavy and doesn't detach real easily.

The Harris is OK for prairie dogs and shooting steel, but they suck ass on a hunting rifle. Way too heavy and bulky.

Off the pack is what I grew up doing and really haven't been able to justify the 1000 or so dollars I have spent on bipods over the years.

One thing I like about the Kifaru Hunter's frame is the "Y" in it, which is an awesome rifle rest, at just the right height for a sitting shot. Lay the pack down and depending on how much stuff is jammed in it, it's great for a prone shot.

I do carry bipods at times, but always go back to my pack.

Bipod mannerisms, are factored by both stock design and recoil. Milk jugs always suck and McMillan tends to shine.

I had one and returned it. It felt really light duty. The center pivot is a 10-32 machine screw with lots of leverage on it. My other gripe has to do with the picatinny mount being sloppy. It’s surely light weight though. With its hefty price tag, I wasn’t compelled to keep it.

Spartan 300 bipod

(I sent the following in PM to Dennis last week.)

I don’t have a Cyke Pod, but I spent considerable time fondling them at SHOT. I hadn’t yet seen one in person when I stumbled on it at MDT’s booth in the LE and Mil section on day 1. I was so impressed took a few pictures, but didn’t write down what I was looking at. That evening, back at my room, I spent an hour scouring the web, trying to figure out what I’d seen. It’s really well designed. The wide stance is a very attractive feature, that and the 170° of cant.

Then on day 3, I stumbled on MDT’s booth on the main floor. They had one sitting on the counter. We discussed the design, availability and price.

The week after shot it was announced that MDT bought Cyke. The price should come down considerably and availability should improve.

I also spent some time with Warne’s new bipod. It’s a well designed unit, but has swivel and cant. I don’t do swivel. It interferes with getting the rifle to recoil straight back, complicating getting back on target.

I also looked at Magpul’s new bipod. It’s a bargain, but narrow.

I currently shoot numerous modified and stock Harris bipods and the Evolution CF bipod. In the past year, I’ve done a pretty comprehensive survey of most of the new stuff coming to market including the Hatch bipod which was flimsy.

I’ve fully expected to transition to the Atlas Gen. 2 CAL, if they’d ever become available. The Cyke Pod changed that.

I see you’re shooting the Spartan 300 Javelin. I looked at it hard last summer, but resisted it due to the proprietary connection and the swivel/rotate function. It look’s like it could be an excellent hunting bipod.

For hunting, I generally either shoot off a little tripod with a padded saddle or off a pack. You’ll see the Eolution Bipod in the second pic.

One $300 bipod with $20 pic mounts for each rifle makes more sense than lesser priced, lightly constructed bipods. Until you try a good, higher-end bipod, it is hard to appreciate.

Just saying, if a bipod is your stress gear of choice, you're already behind....

That is an analysis of futility....

LOL.

That AR in the picture.

It's a Sig piston gun and the can is steel.

Judman was disparaging bipods and ARs so here is another one.

We've already established that you can't shoot without training wheels.

Everyone else can shoot without a bipod, but choose to use one for ease. You, on the other hand, have no choice.

So, you make all your long shots freehand? Or????? No rest needed?

Not every shot is long. In fact, 95%+ aren't. I don't need a rest for short shots. Offhand is fine to 200 on deer. They are big targets. If I want to bump up the steadiness, sitting does the trick. Out to 600, prone without a rest is fine. It's only when you get beyond that you really need a rest. Until then, it's optional.
I personally don't like very long shots on animals - they tend to move. At 600 yards, a typical TOF is about 7/8 of a second. A deer walking is about 5mph. That's over 7 feet in a second. So, if a stationary deer takes a step at the same time you trip the trigger, it could easily turn into a gut shot. That's more than I'm usually comfortable with.

Sometimes it's about the rest allowing a much more agressive trigger pull when needing to time a shot.

Magpul guys Tray and Chandler simultaneously shot these cows from a herd of 30 on a countdown.

The shot was only 320yds but having the bipods on the ground and proned out made it easier to time the shots to get 2 cows.

That's some nice shooting!
You really have to keep your ducks in a row to get off a shot on someone else's command.

It's amazing how good Leupolds work when mounted on a decent rifle. laugh

That said there are sure a lot of good optic these days.

John any experience with the new stuff from leupold mk5 vx-6 vx6hd ect.
I had to many mk4 go back for repairs. But wish for a state side optics Co that hangs with the high end stuff.

Keep in mind I have very few scope problems, maybe I am just lucky.

I did send a VX-6 back for track out and parallax issues but I also took the elevation turret guts out and reassembled it when designing our BDC. shocked

I have 4 VX-6s that I shoot and dial regularly and mounted another 3 digits worth.

Have not quite that much time with the VX-6HD but never had one that was faulty but each one goes on the collimator to be tested.

Retesting posting an image.

Copy I don’t have issues either, though I don’t twist turrets near as much as most do. That being said my cds’s and my m1’s are always $$$...

Whatever happened to “Two wrongs don’t make a right?” Or, “Treat others how you want to be treated?”

I dont think think feeling insulted is very good justification for taking things to a hateful and personal level.

Grudges and hate do way more damage to the person holding them. They also make everybody cringe from the sideline, not admire your courage for taking the low road.

Harris bipods have always been around my rifles as long as I can remember. They’re functional, adaptive to many hunting situations, come in various heights and are easy to locate in most sporting goods stores. Price is where I would expect to pay for this type of collapsible unit.

I did buy a Javelin bipod rebranded by Leupold after this past season. It’s proprietary adapter isn’t that big of an issue should a hunter/shooter decides it’s a good way to fly. You can purchase additional stock adapters, or remove the one you have and screw it onto the fore end of another rifle.

It’s got some precious earth magnet disk that holds the legs inside the adapter housing. It’s a strong enough hold that allows for front loading your rifle. Removing the legs is done with a hard pull. Legs are lightweight carbon fiber that allow for height adjustments on each leg independent of the other for uneven ground.

It’s a small and light, with a carry footprint that easily tucks inside a pack or can be put inside an outer side pack pocket then strapped across to secure while hiking in to an area.

Down side; currently if your buy this unit from Leupold you can’t purchase the longer legs offered through Javelin. You would need to contact Javelin direct to purchase taller legs. Legs purchased from Javelin will fit the Leupold branded bipod.

I am not endorsing the Javelins at this time, since I have only used them while target shooting and haven’t had the chase to expose them to hard hunting conditions.

Great post.

There have been far too many corrosive and spiteful posts on the CF lately...

A problem with the internet is that you can't punch someone in the nose & get on with life.

That would solve a lot of problems.

Bipod vids

Here’s a link to some great videos on bipods. SHLowlight is a wealth of information on PRS/long range shooting stuff and has great instructional videos.

I’m not a huge fan of bipods for wilderness or Western big game hunting, mainly because its more weight to pack around, and for my style of hunting (not long range) a pack, prone, or sitting is how I prefer to shoot given enough time. I own a couple Harris bipods and an Atlas. I think they are great when you need them if you’re willing to pack them. I think they are handy on varmints and handy for shooting paper when you don’t have a bench but want to be more accurate.

I also have/use a tripod and Hog Saddle on a ball head, or a RRS plate with a ball head. I think that setup is even better than a bipod in certain circumstances, but its even more bulky and heavy.

(edited to add: It just dawned on me that my comments about not being a long range hunter are ironic considering I'm posting in said forum. Per usual, my advice is worth what you pay for it!)
