Beats me, average household income in Anchorage is ~$77k/year, state wide ~$70k/year. The state provides a ridiculous amount of services to low income families. Even if your working if you're low income you can get WIC for free food and Denali Kid Care for free medical. I've known a fair number of people that sponge the system and are getting by better than folks earning twice as much but paying their own way.

I can't imagine as a single guy wanting to live in AK if you were making less than $25/hr nor would I suggest a family making it on less than $100k/yr.
