I know we aren't a pure democracy (at least not on a national level). But we are, fundamentally, a democracy.

We are a democracy, fundamentally. A direct democracy all the way up to the state level. We even vote for national representatives (congresscritters and senators) by direct vote. In fact, it's only for president and things like constitutional amendments that we differ from that.
