If you like "vintage" reels you might want to consider something made by Abu Garcia (Cardinal), DAM Quick, or Langley. I have had luck and a lot of enjoyment over the years first being introduced to them as a kid by my dad and then using them as my "mainstays" for many years. You have to take care of them as parts can be a challenge to find. E-bay has been good to me in that regard.
If you don't want the bother, it is hard to argue with the Shimano Spirex route!!!
