When I was growing up in the 70’s and 80’s being a millionaire was huge. I remember our neighbor won a million in the lottery and immediately quit his job and bought a 1500’ house with a 2 car garage 2 blocks up the street, and we looked at him in awe.
Wondering today what’s the equivalent now of a millionaire in 1980. Apparently its $3,650,000 in adjusted dollars. I was actually surprised that’s all it was.

I'm basically pretty rich and here's what works for me.

Keep driving your old vehicle.

Keep living in your old house.

Keep working and making money.

Keep living like a king at home.

Keep humble bragging about being rich.

You’re actually on point, I read a book called the millionaire next door at the request of my CFP a lot of years ago. They pulled together a huge group of millionaires they managed money for and asked a series of questions. Most popular watch, Timex. Age of your vehicle, 8-10 years. Favorite beer, cheap domestic.

Lot of unsuspecting folks are millionaires…

Have a buddy, you’d never know he has money.

If you see in Home Depot or Walmarks he’d prolly have dirty work clothes on. Driving a bear up truck.

They’ve done the $3 mil house in Destin. The fishing yacht. The private plane.

He rather be a deer camp drinking beer.

Guy I trout fish with had great paying jobs for this area , was left several million from his parents estate. To look at him you'd think he was broke . Same bibs all the time , reels taped to his fishing rods ( his have reel seats ) just broken and not replaced. Drinks Bud longnecks . His one somewhat big expense is a membership at a local golf club. Plays every day he's not fishing. Another one used to come in where I work hauling industrial sludge as a side gig. One night he asked to look at one of our rubber tire loaders a Case 821 . Told him to help himself , next time I talked to him he had bought 2 to move corn silage on a couple dairy farms. Guy usually wears the same clothes and drove a Chevy luv pickup when he wasn't in a road tractor or farm truck.

So there’s 58 times more billionaires, 44 times more millionaires now than 1980.

Without a doubt.
1982, Daniel Ludwig was the richest man in the U.S., worth 2 billion.
Today,
Musk = 180B
Gates = 136B
Bezos = 114B

8 total worth over 100B just in the US alone.

So why? Give the value to the next generation snot heads? Enjoy life! We bought a new pickup and trailer and camp, eat steak, gamble a bit and drink good booze. Life is too short! Do what you enjoy and help others.

I tell my dad to spend his money on him. Don't worry about us. I told him him to "rent" a couple 20 year Olds (female) and go to the Caribbean and have fun. He'd be broke afterwards but the 80yo would have a smile....lol

I'd bet there are more folks worth a million that don't look it,
then folks who look it, but are in the red.

New cars, a McMansion, and braggy vacations doesn't mean you actually own the pot you pìss in, or the window you throw it out.

We don't get to the number based on worth.
Lotta folks think we are poor, they live better. In debt.
Actually owning little

Using the 4% rule that's $40K/year today. Not much unless there is a pension in the mix. Of course social security will help. Twenty years from now?

Exactly.

All depends on what you use to calculate “million”.

Take out of the equation primary home equity and a retirement account you can’t touch and I would like to see the millionaire numbers.

$1M in liquid assets vs $1M net worth?

I specifically said $Mil in the bank. You can make 5.25% in a basic CD. Draw your $2900/mo SS, wife draw $1800 = $9075/mo.

My friend was worth, depending on the market, between $700 million and $800 million years ago. His dad passed away and left him an average sized bank, which he sold for an additional $96 million.

Easily the most paranoid and depressed human I’ve ever met.

I’d rather have passive income/liquidity than equity i couldn’t tap. Lots of land poor millionaires living at welfare levels. Net worth is worthless if you can’t afford your grocery bill.

I about shot when he told me that. He bought a lot down here for $45k told me in Long Island it would bring $450k. They’ll sell their house up there, move down here to a house twice as big and pocket a million to retire on plus pay 1/10th that in taxes. That’s the reason red states are turning blue. Libs can’t afford the policies they voted for.

Yup. I read that. I was replying to Calvin.

Some people can't handle money very well. I am reminded of a case in Los Angeles about 25 years ago. A black gangsta in one of the Blood sets, a former prison inmate, sent to the slam for dealing dope, was out of prison on parole, living in South Central. He bought a couple of lottery tickets, became lucky and won several million $$$$$. Within a year, he was back dealing dope, was again arrested and sent back to San Quentin.

Even though he'd won all that money, blown much of it , he just could not stay our of "the Life."

FWIW.

Yeah net worth is a bit misleading when it comes to wealth given the recent rapid appreciation in real estate.

One of the first 50M lottery winners in Fl, back in the 80s IIRC, was won by a woman, took the annuity, no choice back then.... 2.5M a year for 20 years....

Had to go to a financial advisors after a year or so, she was going broke!?!?!?!?

First thing he said was OK Mrs Jones first thing your going to do is STOP buy $3,000 worth of lottery tickets every MONTH!?!?!?!?

People that have never had to manage a lot of money often don't need to try!!!! At least without some guidance.

YMMV

We live rather modestly, drive cars til the wheels practically fall off......

Drove the Cherokee to the dealership this past July, after driving the new car, salesman asked is there anything we should know about the Jeep????

IDK I said, it's 15 years old and 280K miles..... He said it won't start!! I tried several times, it didn't.

I abandoned it at the dealership, they still gave me 1K trade in! Only time I thought I won at the dealership!

Probably DIDN't, but it felt like I did,,,,,

Inflation in general is causing a lot of the “wealth” creation, sadly few recognize its relationship to purchasing power/value of the USD. People aren’t getting rich, they just have twice as many dollars that are worth 1/3 of what they used to be worth. If you’re retired you better have your wealth in assets that appreciate parallel to the rate of inflation.
I agree with Calvin, the equity you have in your primary residence, unless you’re planning on selling at retirement shouldn’t be considered when talking net worth for retirement purposes. Same with any other real estate that doesn’t generate income like second homes etc.

I’m 52 in a few months and SS/Medicare is not a factor in my retirement planning. If there’s something there I’ll take advantage of it, but I’m doubtful. Migrants will collapse it which is likely part of the plan

40k a year with no debt is a lot and easy to live on. In the future this will be almost impossible to achieve.

Thanks boomers.

I've got an uncle you'd never know was one. He's pushing 90, stayed in the old sketchy part of town all these years in a paid for house. Literally just bought his first new vehicle ever as a treat to himself...a tacoma. Claims to have saved and/or invested 33% of every paycheck he had ever made, he was GT grad in chemical engineering, traveled the world for chalk companies and ran plants. Had millions but so stingy he wouldn't even buy my aunt a clothes dryer, she had continue using the clothes line. Has given the max gift to all 6 of his grandchildren each year since they were born, so they left HS with a nice little next egg. When he kicks the buckets, leaving each daughter a cool mil and each grandkid 500k. Aunt died from brain cancer in the 90s and he remarried, he spoiled the next wife and it was bad subject for the daughters. She got to enjoy his successes and not their mother.

Now my other uncle was one too, VP at Abbott and ran between all their international offices and facilities. His kids never wanted anything, and they ended up being two of the most liberal jokers in the family and married other liberals too. Lets just say one works for the DA in Fulton county. One has already blown through about 6 mil of his inheritance. Uncle is dead now so glad he's not around to see it but I'm sure he would be missing those grandbabies.

I don't know, I'm not sure I could live like I'd want to on $40K/year. Without factoring in mortgages or vehicle payments my expenses are about $2500/mth or $32,250/year. Doesn't leave much for vacations, fishing tackle, whiskey and beer...

His wife drove a nice Caddy, though. A very sweet, unassuming lady - and unpretentious.

Most of my relatives that others would consider 'wealthy' pretty much live the same way.

Last vehicle I bought new, was my 1988 4Runner.. still drive that one.. has 600K on it.
Got a couple of cousins, who still drive trucks they bought as far back at 1979.

but the wives still always get a new vehicle every 10 years of so.... My wife has started complaining about driving her 2004 Camry, as its got 200K on it. Guess it will passed on to me fairly soon. I'll buy her a newer vehicle, like a 2010 to 2012 or so....She only puts around 7K a year on a car... chuggin around town, and commuting 6 miles to work at the hospital 4 days a week.

there has been lots of studies on where people feel comfortable ...retired ...on a yearly income, 75,000.00 a year seems to be a sweet spot. of course depends on where you live. quick math....1mil....you could draw 50,000.00 a year for 20 years with no interest. add in 25,000.00 ss per year.....interest stretches it out....also depends on how much you want to leave behind. I have taken pretty much all of my big ticket items off when I was working....couple left then it will be hunting and fishing locally and couple of different states, that's the way I planned it....also when you retire start off with new or fairly new cars/trucks, it may sound cool to be driving around with 350,000 on your truck...no thanks...bob

I'm no millionaire but I haven't made a house payment since '07 and it's been years since I made a car payment. You can live pretty well if you can keep everything you get.

Social security will probably be kicking in at 70 when I get to that age.

I always thought 6k a month would be plenty doable when the kids are out of the house.

When you look at the statistics of what most people retire on, it shows it can be done on much less.

My plan is a mix of part time commercial fishing, rentals, leasing out my business, leasing out quota/permits, SS, and interest income.

Plan on staying on the boat until 55, then hiring my replacement until 65, then leasing the business.

I already own one free and clear. I wouldn’t jump into rentals at today’s prices. And yes, it is a pain in the ass. If rent stays high it’s good income.

I’m all for this.
And I wonder how many people die before collecting SS, or collecting a significant portion of what they contributed. The theft by the government in SS from those who paid in over 30-50 years, is staggering.

Wondering today what’s the equivalent now of a millionaire in 1980. Apparently its $3,650,000 in adjusted dollars. I was actually surprised that’s all it was.
Getting back to the point of the thread, a million bucks in liquidity isn't very much these days. I'm also a bit surprised that $3.6 million will let you live "like a millionaire" although that's compared to 1980, after the massive inflation of the 70's, so it's probably accurate enough.

I do remember when eccentric billionaire Mr. John Beresford Tipton gave away $1,000,000 to some person every week - all taxes paid. In the late 1950's and early 60's a million dollars really would set someone up to live high on the hog for life - if they didn't live too long. $20,000 - $25,000 would buy a very nice house and $3,000 - $4,000 would get you a brand new Corvette. Even in 1970 a hot shot Hemi 'Cuda started at around $3,300.

At least until the mid-70's when home prices just about doubled. Even 15 years later in 1990 you could buy a new Ford F150 XLT Lariat for $14,000. Try that today.

Point is, unless you have liquidity coming out your ass you can't just sit on it (the liquidity or your ass) and expect to live well until some unknown age of death. You still need to keep that money diversified and protected against both inflation on the one hand and large stock market bears on the other.

My best friend used to be a real estate broker. He said you would be amazed at the rich people in this town that are upside down on everything they own. He said you can never tell what someone is worth looking at where they live, what they drive, or the toys they have.
I used to hunt and trap on an old man's place and visited with him often.
He was a millionaire, He lived in a small house trailer overlooking Eleven Point River. Had a 14 foot jon boat tied up with a 7.5 mercury on it. He retired at 40.
He told me then everytime you make or get some money save some of it and put it to work. He was right.

I think these days you need at least a couple million to retire. That number will grow a bunch when the US gove goes bankrupt in the next decade. A million isn't what it used to be.

Most ballers with expensive cars, houses, boats are the most broke dicks in the country. I think the average million+ folks drive a F150 and live a more upper middle class life.

A sister told her two boys that while they were still in high school. One took her seriously, became a millionaire by age 40. He takes his family on outdoor oriented vacations,, has 3 squared away sons..

The other would work enough to set aside a bit, then travel. He married young, his wife did the same. After 5 or 6 years they built a tiny house and started a family. Now he has a good job and is living comfortably, their 5 kids have a great upbringing with a lot of outdoor activities.

I think both approaches worked well.

It depends GREATLY on where you live. Not only because of the 24K in property taxes, but all the other costs of living associated with daily life, from mechanic’s hourly rates to having to pay to park to go shopping or a $500 a month AC or heating bill. In a place with moderate taxes and a reasonable cost of living, $40K after taxes and no house payment isn’t a great luxury, but enough to eat well and not impoverish over time.

The big wildcards, of course, are health care or nursing home expenses. They’ll crack the nest egg in a hurry.

My retirement account was doing well before Bidenomics hit. We lost a bunch in the slide, but it recovered slightly and is holding steady. What hurts now are the prices of everything. Just got a quote on auto insurance, $3200 a year for the truck, older jeep, wife's car, and our 25' travel trailer. Spent $421 bucks last week for a full cart of groceries ! Stopped at Sonic the other night, one burger, a corn dog, large fries and drink was $18.46 ! I don't know how long the country can survive this crap.

Interest on a banked million is marginally enough today to carry a family through all of life's events. If one could get 8% return annually and not touch principle, that's only $80k, so the sail boats, planes, and Jaguars are likely out. One could squeak by, but would not be the talk of the town.

Cookie and I worked hard, saved some, have pensions, some IRA's, and social security, and are probably spending about a million bucks about every 11 or 12 years. We are comfortable, still saving some, but not living high on the hog by any means. Inflation is a concern too.

If I could time travel and return, I'd go to the future, look up my obituary, and come back knowing just how long my resources have to last. Could die tomorrow or last another 25 years. That uncertainty keeps me on the conservative side.

Win one of those substantial lotteries though, and I'd likely never post here again. I'd be way to busy traveling and doing sh-t.

Using the 4% rule that's $40K/year today. Not much unless there is a pension in the mix. Of course social security will help. Twenty years from now?

40k a year with no debt is a lot and easy to live on. In the future this will be almost impossible to achieve.

Thanks boomers.

They still think they "earned" their SS.

It's sweet.

Just let people keep their own money. Don't need some fugked up govt program buried in adimistrivia to give your own money back to you after using it for 40 years to fund wars all over the world.

That about says it.

With some actual guidance...I bet the money would have been put to better use.

As it stands though....people are getting more than they paid in....so your taxes are long gone.

I live in a subdivision surrounded by million dollar plus homes. The retirees own them free and clear, the young folks, its doubtful. Including housing in net worth here it is easy to be a millionaire. But, I don't know anyone taking trips to Africa. Liquid cash available- who knows.

The government keeps saying it want more affordable housing constructed, it is essential! When asked the government spokesmen admitted they didn't have a definition of "affordable housing".

The 6 Ps with proper execution of plan makes for a more pleasant retirement. Planning on the lottery is a fools plan.

Those million dollar homes in your neighborhood are not an asset to the young folks. They're a chain around those young folks' neck. They only realize any liquidity when they sell, and if it's worth more than what they paid for it. I do know people that are constantly buying the next bigger house.

I don't know, I'm not sure I could live like I'd want to on $40K/year. Without factoring in mortgages or vehicle payments my expenses are about $2500/mth or $32,250/year. Doesn't leave much for vacations, fishing tackle, whiskey and beer...

there has been lots of studies on where people feel comfortable ...retired ...on a yearly income, 75,000.00 a year seems to be a sweet spot. of course depends on where you live. quick math....1mil....you could draw 50,000.00 a year for 20 years with no interest. add in 25,000.00 ss per year.....interest stretches it out....also depends on how much you want to leave behind.

Hah. That's funny, Bob. My vehicles don't usually make it anywhere near 350,000. But, that was when I was always buying American cars. Mine might make it to 200,000. If they do, they're usually crawling into the dealer lot. We'll see how this 4Runner does. In 4 years, this thing is still tight as a drum. But i'm not beating it up every day with construction material going in and out of the back of it.

I've heard it said of millionaires that the first generation earns it, the second generation grows it, and the subsequent generations spend it. That has been, pretty much, a reflection of what I've seen, although sometimes the second generation is so deep into drugs and alcohol that they burn through a lot of the capital before the third generation gets their chance to spend much of it.

I know a guy whose family sold their business for around $40M. He is deeply into drugs and alcohol. His older sister was also deeply into drugs and alcohol, but she died in her 50s. His younger brother is also deeply into drugs and alcohol, but lives the life of a ski bum and mountain biker, winters at Grand Targhee followed by northern hemisphere summers at Thredbo. The brother that I know spends money in amounts that make you shake your head. Private charter jets to Europe. Private yacht charters on the Caribbean and Mediterranean. At one time he had a Saracen armored car. He has at least 6 houses or condos in places like Telluride, Palm Springs, and Palm Beach that I know of that he pays caretakers to maintain. He has 2 daughters who are in their 20s, but he doesn't take care of them because they remind him of his first, of four, failed marriages. He is toxic, living proof that money doesn't buy you happiness.

If I had generational wealth and my kids were irresponsible, I'd put a fair portion of it into a professionally managed trust for each of them that would make distributions in amounts that would allow them to have comfortable lives, but not be able to piss away the capital.

that right there is exactly class act type people. this day and age especially on farms it doesn't really take that much to have a million dollars in assets. the key is to have it all paid for and not borrow any more money and operate within your means..

Keep your 2nd house and your first wife, and with a little luck, you’ll retire a millionaire. Problem is retiring with $1 million in your 401k doesn’t really go that far these days.

There is a farmer near me that has more money than God.

He farms a fairly large piece of ground and does it all with older machinery that he fixes/maintains himself. Still lives on the old home place and keeps it up nice.

Old International tractor pulling a 6 row planter. His neighbors all have new machines and huge disks and planters. I know who has the money....

Great old guy that knows how to make it work for him.

8% on $3,600,000 would be $288k a year without touching principal. Not sure how realistic expecting 8% return over a long period is though. Figure 5% as an easy number, that’s $180k and still a reasonable amount of you don’t live crazy extravagantly.

Friend of a friend…

Oral surgeon…

Oral surgeon + something else.( i don’t recall ) not many are both.

Most down to earth fellow you’ll meet.

He’ll tell his story….

Literally came from a trailer park.
Grew up with ppl telling him “John, you’ll never be anything”

He’s successful now. But you wouldn’t know it talking to him.

Throws hella a crawfish boil each year…

Average person at retirement age has $476,000 in savings.

The financial industry will try to convince you that you have to work your entire life and have millions of dollars in a 401(k). That is so they can skim their percentage off the top and make money but the reality is you really don’t need as much as you think you do, if you’re not an idiot with money.

Empower says the average retirement account they oversee for people ages 65-70 is $185,858. That’s absolutely nothing! That’s just over $20k a year for 10 years when accounting for gains. Most Americans don’t save.

Good for you. By the time I put money into 401k’s, brokerage accounts, 529’s, and back door the Roth, well, I’m pretty much paycheck to paycheck.

Buddies mom passed last year.
She worked for DeKalb co schools and retired in the mid 90’s.

His Dad died around 1980 and she was a single mom. Never remarried. Woman bought a new Crown Vic about every 10 years and that was about it.

Buddy about schit when he went through the finances etc….She had millions (as in more than a couple) dollars packed away.

Steady saving, some good fortune in investments, and living within your means has left a lot of wealth with a lot of the Boomer and Gen x crowd.

Trust me, while I’m living rent free in your head, you are about the last thing I think of, or care about. Matter of fact, I’m currently enjoying a Gin and Tonic (basically the official drink of Africa safari) at my bar watching Cape buffalo hunting while planning my next safari. I couldn’t care enough to hate you! Cheers!

You're just some dumb liberal twat on the internet twat that comes over here to make a stink for a while, and then you leave with your fugking tail stuck between your legs. Your writing style goes right to you thinking that you've got more than and are better than everybody else. You obviously have zero friends, So you come here to try to stir up schit. You're not above me, you ignant liberal twat. But you're painting a beautiful portrait of yourself by thinking that and then come on here and actually write it what a moron.
I call a fugking skunk a skunk. It's the way I was raised and I'll die that way. You're a low life piece of schit that's got herself a couple bucks now and thinks she's Elvis Presley.

I really like how you say "trust me". Con artists and rip offs say that. We've got a new category now. Lying liberal twats that don't know how to keep their mouth shut.

Now FOAD.

Based on all your vulgarity, I’d say it’s you that doesn’t know how to keep their mouths shut. That’s OK though. Something tells me I wont have to worry about you booking the spots in Africa I want. I have some gin and tonics to drink, so good night to you sir.

You just don't get it. Nobody cares what you do, have or where you go. You've proven what an ignorant chkunt you are over and over. And I'll use vulgarity or anything else it takes, against the swine who are aligning with the communist pigs trying to destroy our country.

Like a moth to a flame you are. Just. Can't. Let. Go.

Don't think wiki mentioned it, but he was debt free. Owned everything outright. The Amazon project was about a billion dollars and paid for with no banks.

My neighbor is a wealthy man. He once mentioned that the first rule of wealth is to not talk about wealth. When you have it you do not have tell people you have it. They just know you do. Stay humble about it, money can easily bring about arrogance. No one likes a person with those two qualities. I would rather just be called an [bleep], as being called a rich [bleep] is even more insulating.

Matter of fact, I’m currently enjoying a Gin and Tonic (basically the official drink of Africa safari) at my bar watching Cape buffalo hunting while planning my next safari. I couldn’t care enough to hate you! Cheers!

Quit lyin that ain’t ur bar

Your right. But if you look REAL close you’ll see the two bottles of Blantons on the upper right shelf, and just to the left of the 291, you’ll see some Bookers as well. But it’s not my bar. If you go back and look at the gun room picts that aren’t my gun room, through the double doors you’ll see the bar that’s not mine as well!🤣

Hey, look at that. Two more coming inbound. A 1920 LC Smith Specialty grade, and a Sako 85 Finnlight 7mm. Still looking for a 375 H&H I can’t pass up. Any leads?

I remember back during the bubble bursting in 2007-2008, my folks told me the only people in their circle who got hurt were those who retired with a mortgage.

Debt can be a crippler, retire debt free.

Everyone has different wants and needs. Some people are happy living in one of the poorest counties in the US, driving old Ford diesel trucks, trying to grow and kill what they eat while living in a double wide on a private lake. Anyone want to buy a house? I have one for sale and will even throw in all 3 boats.

Good friend has amassed over 500M and still growing. He has owned two rifles his entire hunting life and not many more shotguns. In fact, until just a few years ago, he was still hunting with a Browning his parents bought for him on his 16th birthday.

If you're living off interest and SS as I posted before, how long you live is irrelevant.

I recently completed a post-retired budget on a spreadsheet. Listed everything I could think of, then started guesstimating how much we’d spend on each item per month. Summed it, annualized it, subtracted SS, then multiplied the remainder by 1.3 to account for taxes. Then I divided the result by 0.05 to see how much I needed to generate the result in interest at 5%.

When we tip over the kids get the principal.

Looks like I’ll need to keep saving for awhile.

Edit to add, love was a line item, but I called it “gas.”

HERCULES AND PLUTUS

When Hercules was received among the gods and was entertained at a banquet by Jupiter, he responded courteously to the greetings of all with the exception of Plutus, the god of wealth. When Plutus approached him, he cast his eyes upon the ground, and turned away and pretended not to see him. Jupiter was surprised at this conduct on his part, and asked why, after having been so cordial with all the other gods, he had behaved like that to Plutus. "Sire," said Hercules, "I do not like Plutus, and I will tell you why. When we were on earth together I always noticed that he was to be found in the company of scoundrels."

Not really. We have been doing retirement planning. We owe 0 to anyone. Our bills total $3k/mo. We want $6k/mo after taxes. We will die with more money than we have now.

I turn 61 in a few months. Social Security in 14 months, and in 2 yrs. I get $750 month from a pension. That should be about $2,800 month.. We dont owe anything and out house is 15 yrs old so no major repairs. As of now, we have a fair amount per yr. in dividends from our home made retirement account. Some is old 401K's though. That will bring us to about $60K a year, and $75K yr. after the wife gets her S.S. ( fingers crossedwith S.S though).. We will be fine, only cause I live so cheap . All those millionaires you all talk about, I could make them blush. Snicker. But I like it that way. Millionaires straightening out nails? You mean some people throw out crooked nails? I hang my clothes on the line 12 months a yr. and I live in Wis. They do dry in winter fairly well. Heat with wood . My electric bill was $67 and gas was $19. last month.. I don't always work on my cars anymore though.. I hunt 5 miles from home , fishing hole is 26 mi. A person can live pretty good with quite little. My son works at a " wealth managment firm. He sais " dad, the ones that have money live poor and are the happiest. The trust fund people are seldom happy, always have to complain about something and got their money for free. He sees 1,200 accounts , including his bosses. Monday God gave me a wakeup call. Many times I complain that I cant retire yet. That day , I tore my rotator cuff again . The pain is just unbearable sometimes. I worked 4 hrs. Monday and by Thursday the pain lessened to soreness and was bearable when sanding the oak floor. I was so happy to be back at work and said I would gladly work late into life than live in pain all the time. It was a blessing to be back at work.

Wondering today what’s the equivalent now of a millionaire in 1980. Apparently its $3,650,000 in adjusted dollars. I was actually surprised that’s all it was.
That's based on fake inflation numbers. To live like a 1970s millionaire today would take ten million dollars or more.

Got in equities at 23. Looking at selling off $70k or so for a car I want. No issues here. Missing my gold/silver opportunities... Just fact here.

My wife and I were always self employed. so no pension (or sick leave or paid time off). We did fund our IRAs and saved additional amounts in an investment account. We learned that paying other people to manage our money resulted in less money actually being earned. So we manage our own funds. We were debt free at 45 and we retired at 53, although I worked on limited special projects for another 8 years, mostly to fund capital expenses (pick up, travel trailer, bulldozer, excavator, dump truck, NULA, etc.). We can live on Social Security and next year we both face RMDs. What we have found is that a lot of people underestimate the amount of tax they have to pay in retirement - including on SS and of course on the RMDs. Our taxes are going up a lot next year as we move funds from our IRA to our investment account.

A million invested in the DOW in 1979 is now worth 40-45 million.

A million in a 401K isn't any big deal, especially if it's combined household with you and your spouse. Pretty easy for both of you to combine to a million by retirement time if you can manage your money.

Pretty easy math on pensions. Mostly as long as you live, and maybe longer for your spouse if you go first. No need for a calculator.
