The only thing that pisses me off more than someone drive at or below the speed limit in the left lane is an EV driving at or below the speed limit in the left lane.

Wish more cops would stop these idiots.

January first a new tougher law went into effect in FL for that very thing. Left lane drivers who are NOT passing someone are liable to get a ticket. $150 fine for just riding along in the fast lane. This only is for highways of two or more lanes in each direction, not city driving. I can't wait to see a trooperette writing a ticket for this.

Come on guys, if you are driving at or below the speed limit, you need to be in the slow lane. That is on the right hand side. Don't slow down when you get alongside a semi either. You like fu cking with other drivers, and then wonder why there's road rage.
Posted By: JeffA Re: Left Lane Campers - 01/15/24
People are as ignorant about left lane laws as they are about changing lanes when turning at a intersection and sweeping across three lanes.

No comprehension at all as to how it could possibly be their fault when an accident occurs as a result of their stupidity.

Yep. The fastest car on the road doesn’t get to dictate the speed limit. I try to be courteous, but if some pos is going to tailgate when I’m passing slower traffic, they’re going to sit there a while.

My ex's parents moved into a senior's condo building. In the laundry room there was a sign that said

"There is only one rule for driving. If people are passing you on the right - you're in the WRONG LANE!"

If you're in the left lane on the interstate then you are the problem.
Posted By: Alaskajim Re: Left Lane Campers - 01/15/24
The speed limit is the speed limit no matter what lane you’re in. The left lane isn’t only for ‘you’. I don’t camp in the left lane, but if I ain’t going fast enough for you, tough chit, pass me on the right if you can find a spot to pass b/c if I’m in the left lane it’s b/c I’m passing.
It amazes me that grown men don't know how to drive on the highway and what the left hand lane is for. And then their dumba$$ attitude they have towards other drivers that are in the right. WOW! I'm sure some of you guys are the first one to flip the bird and get the road rage going. I can actually hear the road rage in your remarks! You can't make this shiit up either.
Posted By: Vic_in_Va Re: Left Lane Campers - 01/15/24
VA has a law that says if you're in the left lane, you need to be passing. No reference to speed. If you are blocking the left lane while riding beside somebody, you need to find a way to move over.

That's exactly what a County Police officer told me after I asked him about it after the law was passed. No, I hadn't been stopped, he was hunting with us.

He also said enforcement is a discretionary thing....
Posted By: STRSWilson Re: Left Lane Campers - 01/15/24
Georgia House Bill 459 - Slower drivers must move out of the passing lane (most left-hand lane) and over to the right to allow faster-moving traffic to proceed. Regardless of the speed you are traveling, you must move from the lane when faster traffic is approaching.

Ignorance is bliss for some drivers, then again ignorant drivers are just ignorant and cause a lot of accidents for everyone else.
Posted By: Steve Re: Left Lane Campers - 01/15/24
If I'm actively passing people while in the left lane, ride my ass all you want. I'm not moving over.

I'm also not moving over if some one in the lane to the right of me is probably going to cause me to slow down before the ass rider gets around me.

Other than that I try to stay out of the PASSING lane.
Posted By: Scotty Re: Left Lane Campers - 01/15/24
The town I live in there are a lot of people that drive in the lane that is what they want for their next turn. If they are going to make a left turn 3 miles down the road they will do 40 in a 45. This use to make me upset. Now I just realize they don't know how to drive so just accept it. I usually get in the lane I need for a turn within a couple of blocks. There is one turn I take about 4 times a week that with heavy traffic I will turn in the lane I need about 4 blocks ahead of time.

A year ago we were in South Dakota. Coming out of Rapid City the speed limit changes to 80 all the way to Sioux Falls, I think. I told my wife if she was more comfortable driving 70 that was OK. But I told her to stay in the right lane. I also told her if she needed to pass someone make sure no one is coming up behind her. If they were let them go the speed limit and she could slow down for the vehicle in front of her. She had never driven over 70 before and was learning to drive so I thought that was best for her.

I tend to drive in the right lane at the posted speed limit. Pass slower traffic as needed and then back to the right lane. Ride my ass while I'm doing the limit and refuse to pass on the left will only frustrate you. IDGAF if you sit there all day. Plenty of times I've seen some hotshot who passed by in a blur get pulled over just up the road.

Why am I an azzhole for not breaking the law?
I see everyone always hammering on old Sharpblades or whatever he goes by, for baiting deer or whatever he did.
Law is the law. Big difference in baiting a deer and speeding? Both can get you a fine.

Back when they enacted the 55 MPH speed limit, years ago, I got nailed for speeding. Got me on radar doing 57 MPH in a 55 zone. Cost me the price of a new pair of boots for the ticket. The officer was a prick, granted. But I DID break the law and paid for it.

If you are in the right lane of a divided 4 lane or on a two lane when that happens, understandable itch.

If you are in the left lane of a divided 4 lane, simply move to the right.

Not being racist, but why do blacks not know how to use Bluetooth and cruise control?

I set my cruise control at 85 and I'll pass the same moron 10 times in 10 miles. I eventually tire of the game and crank it up to 95 to put some distance between us. Then, 20 minutes later they are trying to pass me again...

I'll speed up and move over and then drop back dow to 5-7 mph over the speed limit. I do it to be courteous, I'm mindful that the person behind me "might" have an actual emergency or some other good reason for speeding. It's not my job to slow them down and I would rather have them in front of me than tailgating me. I don't tailgate either.
Posted By: PaulBarnard Re: Left Lane Campers - 01/15/24
I typically set the cruise on 73 in a 70 zone. You have speed governed trucks and a few people who will not go over the posted speed limit. Then you have those drivers who will run 77 or so thinking they won't be ticketed at that speed. This group seems to be the majority. Then you have those that haul ass and those that go really slow, those typically being large towing vehicles. That speed works great for me, because I won't get a ticket and don't have to do anything when I see enforcement. I often find myself in a nice bubble with nobody around me.

When I go to pass, I look behind and make sure that nobody is going to have to jam on the brakes. I'll keep my speed at 73 if nobody is coming up behind me. I'll run it up to 76 or 77 if someone will arrive at my back bumper before I complete my pass. Someone who thinks I am supposed to dive out of their way into a tight gap between vehicles or speed up to a speed that will get me a ticket, so that they can do 95, will be disappointed.

If i come up in the left lane behind someone who is actively passing, I remain a safe distance behind. If I come up behind someone running a rolling road block, I stay back and give a few flashes of the lights. If that doesn't work, I start crowding them.

I don't play games when driving. Probably because I'm a lifelong motorcycle rider. I do whatever's possible to stay out of people's way.

A 2 lane highway leads to the road that I live on. People habitually speed on that highway. It's not unheard of for people to pass me doing 70+ when I'm doing 5 mph over the 55 speed limit on the 2 lane highway.

I move over a little and hit the brakes a bit for them when they pass me. I try to keep those idiots from killing themselves to the best of my ability.

That stretch of 1-10 in the OP, between Phoenix and Tucson is notorious for major accidents with fatalities. It’s the one highway I hated to drive when I made frequent trips from Phoenix to Casa Grande.

Ohio Buckeye drivers are the worst! We live across the river from Ohio and there's a running joke about slow drivers in the passing lane nearly always being Buckeyes. I've been on vacation hundreds of miles from home and seen Buckeye drivers holding up traffic in the left lane.
Posted By: MartinStrummer Re: Left Lane Campers - 01/15/24
I've pulled some "fecal cranium" stunts in my time, but for the most part, they were youthful ignorance and exuberance! i.e. stupidity 😖

These days, left lane is for passing, right lane is for speed limit driving. Three lanes, I take the center.
With cruise, I set it 4mph above the limit.
What perturbs me is when I'm doing 74 in a 70 and I look in my review and here comes a "herd" of vehicles doing WAY over the speed limit.
I call them "wolf packs"! There always seems to be AT LEAST one jacked up, monster tired 4WD with stacks or loud pipes defying everything their vehicle stands for! LOL!
When a wolf pack rushes in, I slow down just enough to let them go WAY ahead. I want nothing to do with their shenanigans!

The next is the semi that just KNOWS he can pass the semi in the other lane.....and he ain't giving up the inside lane until he's successful! 😖 The semi being passed ain't about to give up the momentum he's achieved! HE ain't slowing down to help clear the road! 😡

Then, there's the "motersickles"!
Passing on the shoulder, running the striped line or some other stupid, life altering stunt! Usually at 90+mph!

(sung to the tune of Willie Nelson's "Blue Eyes Cryin' In The Rain"!)
"Blue hair driving in my lane!"
Granny is white knuckle in the fast lane and she ain't doing more than 45 mph, even at the risk of missing the K-Mart "blue light special"!

Am I the perfect driver? Heck no! ....but I try!

About 3 years ago, the wife and me drove to Phoenix, AZ.
We traveled US Hwy 287 to Amarillo, TX, IH40 out to Flagstaff, AZ then south to Phoenix.
Interstate 40, from Amarillo, TX out to Flagstaff, AZ was absolutely INSANE!
Speed limit was 75mph. If you weren't doing 80+mph, the SEMI'S would run over you! 🤯
Truck traffic was unbelievable, accounting for at least 40% of traffic!
Posted By: Bristoe Re: Left Lane Campers - 01/15/24
Reminds me,..a couple of years ago, New Years day--that same stretch of 2 lane highway.

A raggedy ass old Toyota Corolla came rolling up on me weaving all here and there and passed me doing about 75--literally tossed a tall boy beer can out the window as he pulled back in front of me.

I'm not much for calling the cops on people. But if I had my phone on me I would have called him in. He was going to get somebody killed.

I-80 between Omaha and Des Moines is my least favorite piece of Interstate Highway because it is rolling hills, you're either going up or your going down, and there are always a lot of trucks on the road. You'll get behind a group of several trucks and when one attempts to pass the ones ahead of him, he'll block the left lane for several miles if get behind him on the uphill side of a roll.

Speed limit 65 MPH. Get behind someone doing 63. Set my cruise on 65 and take time passing them for 3 miles or so. LOL

My niece and her family were out visiting from back east last summer. We took them up to Rocky Mountain National Park. Drove up top and admired the views and then drove out the west entrance along the headwaters of the Colorado. They said they wanted to see some moose, so I said "no problem, we'll just drive along here until we see a bunch of cars stopped in the road and we'll know there are moose there." Sure enough, we hadn't driven more than a mile or two before we found the moose

If i come up in the left lane behind someone who is actively passing, I remain a safe distance behind. If I come up behind someone running a rolling road block, I stay back and give a few flashes of the lights. If that doesn't work, I start crowding them.

Gotta give you credit - that's pretty fast for a bike!

I have hit 50 one time in my life. This is more typical of my downhill max. On this trip there were a lot of slow moving motor vehicles that would get out of my way, so I passed them, some on a double yellow.

You have no control over what others do - only yourself. You aren't any kind of 'enforcer of the law' or hall monitor.
Just move over and let people by. Safer for you, for them, for adjacent drivers AND no stress. Pretty damn simple really.

Nope. Sorry. Like I said, left lane doesn't mean 90. They can GFT. If they're doing 90 and need to get around me, they can pass on the right. Fugk em. They're the danger. Not me.

A few years ago near here 3 young azz wholes decided that 100km/h means 100km/h (62mph) and they were going to enforce it!

They blocked three lanes across on a busy highway during rush hour doing exactly 100km/h. IIRC, the ensuing traffic jam caused a serious injury. All 3 were convicted of serious traffic offences - dangerous driving, I think - for following the law to the letter, supposedly. In reality, because they were being azz wholes who put people in danger.

There are a lot of Meatheads in S FLA dirt, as you are well aware I'm sure. As soon as I hit Ft Pearce heading south the traffic picks up and people are off to the races.

Jahrs, exactly. Some of these meatheads around here would run 150 if they thought they could get away with it.

There is a main east-west thoroughfare a couple blocks from my house that runs from the beaches to the Glades. I used to take my Harley out there and air it out after I got everything dialed in just right. People are still doing that now, but the problem is there is a lot more traffic and side roads onto that thoroughfare. Now, It's not safe to do that anymore. The population has grown so much down here in the time I've been here. Stuff like that is not safe at all anymore. Only place I do that now is out on 27 right up next to the Glades. Smokey is out there more now, though.

Posted By: Jim1611 Re: Left Lane Campers - 01/16/24
No matter what the speed limit is getting in that left lane and not staying with the faster traffic is not safe. I-70 across Missouri is a good example. Most of the time that left lane is going 80 mph. It doesn't seem unsafe to me as long as the traffic doesn't get bunched up but when it does it's almost always someone with their cruise set and lollygagging along. I wish we had more guys in our state like this guy in the video.
Posted By: mart Re: Left Lane Campers - 01/16/24
The left lane campers can be irritating but the real boneheads are the APD guys who like to do what is called pacing, during rush hour. They'll get in the left lane and match the speed of the guy in the right lane and back up traffic from Eagle River to the flats. Apparently they think its funny. I followed them a couple times to make sure it was a cop because of the unmarked car and sure enough they drove straight to APD. I miss Alaska but I don't miss that drive to Anchorage.

Exactly!!! New Mexico drivers play that game a lot on Interstate 25 between Las Vegas and Santa Fe. They don’t do that on I25 between Santa Fe and Albuquerque because they will get their heads blown off by the guy they’re Fuggin with!

My point is that neither side is entitled. If you’re not passing then stay in the right lanes. Still doesn’t give clowns the right to speed and create unsafe driving conditions which both conditions can and do create.

Slower traffic keep right, it's pretty self-explanatory. If someone is behind you get the he'll over. I try to be respectful and not ride up on someone's bumper. But if I have to pass someone on the right I always flip them the finger.

This left lane discussion says “there is no speed limit”, or maybe if your going 85 in the left lane in a 70MPH zone, and some one wants to pass you in the left lane and they are going 90, you get the ticket for going too slow while camping in the left lane. I will not camp in the left lane when everyone on the road in the right lane goes at least the speed limit.

There’s other reasons to be in the left lane if you are not passing

The highways here in NM are in such disrepair from Semi traffic that the right lanes are often full of Giant cracks, potholes, ruts with stretches of rough fuqked up asphalt

I often cruise in the left lane because the road is in better shape, always aware of faster drivers approaching
Posted By: dassa Re: Left Lane Campers - 01/16/24
The best time ever to drive was during the covid lockdown. All the knuckleheads who were worried about the speed limit were cowering in their houses, so the people who know how to drive had the freeway to ourselves. Folks going 100+, no accidents, no rush hour, just good, wide open travel.

It seems people who think the govt can tell them how fast to drive to be safe also think the govt can tell them to stay home to be safe.

The comment above about NM highways is spot on. The left lanes are crap. Pick a multilane road in NM, all in disrepair. Federal tax dollars aren’t flowing down to interstate road funds.

The right lane 40 from Santa Rosa to the TX line was horrible when I drove it this summer. I used the left lane, then moved over when vehicles approached from behind. We're sending hundreds of billions to the Ukes and our roads are worse than theirs.

Oh, I see plenty drive in the left lane for that reason or some other and claim to be aware. Almost every single one of them makes someone slow down before they pull over though. Thankfully I don't drive too fast these days, but the roads are full of [bleep].

I've learned you can't beat the left lane game either played by a few mario idiots or a couple smart truck drivers.
It comes down to self defense driving. I am not a slow driver by any standard.
The biggest amazement to me is how many wrecks happen and deaths between here and town, It's basically a straight road interstate with two lanes where we're all going the same direction.
One guy hit a tree and died which I count as skilled because trees are scarce for the last 100 miles he came from.
Now the No joke: Feds banning humorous electronic messages on highways across the country, with an 1100 page manual. )))

Its 130 or so miles from Omaha to Des Moines and they can be frustrating miles if you want to go 75 and get caught behind a semi going 65 or less on the uphill side of one of those rolls.

I do agree that older folks should be required to take a driving competency test every couple of years after age 70. I'm 68 and haven't had a car accident or a ticket for over 20 years.

A wreck ahead of you could block / stop the whole highway, you included.
Why would you want that ?

All you speeders, think that right lane is always open.
. It's not, and I'm not going to bob and weave.around a bunch of slow pokes just to make some speeder happy. I used to travel Alligator Alley almost every week. And i've seen some grizzly ass wrecks out there. A lot of them because of some speeding fugking [bleep]. I've cut people out of their seatbelts that I knew weren't gonna make It. Try that after that same person just blew by you 5 min earlier at 90+ mph. You can all kiss my big lilly white ass and go kill yourselves and several other people somewhere else, but not around me. Fugk you.

I don’t block traffic and loathe the drivers that do. But if im doing 75 passing 65 mph traffic im not jumping in the slow lane because the guy behind me wants to do 85. I’ll move. Don’t push.

And it’s polite to jet your windshield washers when they’re 8 or 10 feet off your bumper just to let them know you care.

Thanks for putting a name to this. I’ve seen this happen twice now, the second time I figured out it was a New Mexico State Patrol scam to enhance revenue …

In this case the wife and I were leaving Santa Fe at about 5:30pm heading north (east) merging onto Interstate 25 on a Friday into heavy fast traffic going north from Albuquerque.

Being Friday people were speeding 80-85 to get to Pueblo/Colorado Springs/Denver etc for the weekend.

On the outskirts of Santa Fe a NM State Trooper car got in the left lane going like 5 mph under the limit (70 in a 75 zone). Big jam up of cars because nobody wants to pass a cop on the right. Prolly 200 cars. After about 5 miles of this the trooper went into right lane then exited the interstate.

The pent up frustrations of the car jam broke loose and it was pedal to the metal Mad Max. Of course a couple miles further up there was a speed trap with multiple state trooper cars. They were pulling people over right and left, most going over 90 mph. Easy money!

And I bet the first State Trooper went back and repeated the “go slow in left lane” trick again and again!

Laughin' 60 doesn't seem so old when you're looking back at it!

I do agree that older folks should be required to take a driving competency test every couple of years after age 70. I'm 68 and haven't had a car accident or a ticket for over 20 years.

The test isn't the question. You been running interference in the left lane?

I-44 going through Missouri is very heavily traveled by trucks. What I hate is when the speed limit is 70 and there is a truck in the right lane going 56 and a truck in the left lane going 57. It really back up traffic.

Slower traffic keep right signs aren't a suggestion. And they don't say slower traffic keep right, unless doing the speed limit.

Same goes for keep right unless passing.

I miss driving in Germany, they actually know what they're doing.

Don't know about everywhere else but there's a minimum of 3 lanes on the highways around here. Left is for those of us passing or wanting to really break the law. Right is for grandpa, grandma and the truckers. Middle for the people doing the speed limit.

Seems so easy to pull over and let someone go by and it takes much less room to pull over than it does to pass someone on the right.

[quote=STRSWilson]The German Autobahn works because every German knows how to drive and I love driving there -

So true STRS.

Driving to the right is taken seriously there

Also EVERYONE has to go to driving school in order to get a driver license.

All are taught to the same standards nationwide.

Cars also have to pass a rigorous inspection that keeps unsafe and clunker vehicles off the road.

Wish we did both here.

Our accident rate would decline.

I felt safer there driving at 90-100 mph than I do here at 60.

Another reason to be in the left lane for reasons other than passing is moving over to allow on ramp traffic in. Seems like when I do this, I often have some self-important cockweasel drive up my butt. It's even more frustrating when the merging vehicle speed matches me.

I guess the moral of the story is, I had better put the pedal to the floor if I move into left lane to pass. I sure wouldn’t want to inconvenience the pos that’s burning up the road in the left lane. That pos deserves complete compliance from anyone entering his lane. Laffin…… Yea right. I will extend the courtesy that I’m given, and nothing more.

Type A. Yep some of y'all are. If I'm passing someone I will continue to pass. If the folks in front of me are not going faster than I am I will continue there as I pass folks.

Nope never wanted to monitor halls. Or snitch. Ever.

Drove 50K a year for 17 years, ATL 75 was usually the worst. I stay in the right lane unless it’s a three lane and there’s lots of on ramp merging traffic.

Four way stops seem to confuse folks regardless of age. The one below the house got its signs busted up every week, until the DOT made it a single lane traffic circle, now they just run straight across it busting up more signs. Can’t seem to figure out the vehicle in the circle has the right of way…

A couple weeks ago actually saw a driving school vehicle in the HOV lane doing exactly the speed limit. On the busiest highway in the country! Traffic was way backed up for this douche. If this is the quality of driving instruction we have, then its the younger ones who need extra testing, not the boomers.

One other thing. Slower traffic keep right doesn't apply on the divided 3 lane 40 MPH retail district roads. In heavy traffic, sometimes you have to get in the far left lane to set up to turn well ahead of time. Not turning soon, no reason not to leave the left lane open for those in a hurry.

I can't believe the amount of self-centered A$$holes are on this forum. Regardless of any speed limits, the left lane should be used for passing. If there is faster traffic behind you GTF out of the way. I've driven on the Autobahn in Germany. and it can be seriously dangerous to hog the left lane. It's unlawful to pass on the right. So one does not want to be in the left lane when a Porsche can be coming up behind you at 125mph or more.

I drive I-5 in Central California six or more times a month, and it is dangerous to stay in the left lane there, as well. All the CHP drive 78 miles an hour on that freeway for self preservation.

Oncoming ramp traffic should be going the speed limit by the time they merge but half of the azzhats want to poke up/down a ramp and not be up to the speed limit when they're ready to merge.

My late mother in law would ride the brakes down the entrance ramp to I 84 in Danbury. Just coasting you would be doing 50 plus by the time you made the merge. I got behind her once and would have rear ended her if my wife didn’t clue me in. Petrified of the interstate.

I once saw my wife’s aunt STOP at the end of an interstate entrance ramp!!! How she’s still alive today is one of life’s mysteries.

Not going to read past the first page because like every time this comes up there's idiots on both sides of the argument. As if there's one rule that applies everywhere.

"Passing lane" doesn't apply everywhere in every state. Those of you who can't get this into your hard heads look pretty stupid, and are half the problem. If you did much driving outside your little world, maybe you'd learn. Lots of places where exits are on the left. Others where signs designate "through traffic keep left" (but yeah - who reads signs?). Not to mention those times when it's just smart and safer to avoid those idiots who don't know how to merge onto the freeway from the onramp.

And yeah, I get out of the way when I can safely do so - regardless of who's going how fast. You dolts who refuse to do so out of spite are the other half of the problem.

But I laugh at you guys claiming "passing lane". Around here, all four lanes are jammed almost all the time. Pick any lane during rush hour and I guarantee that it will be stopped as much as it's moving. You might as well resign yourself to get your ass out of bed earlier or be perpetually pissed and late for work. What a sorry life.

No idea what was wrong yesterday morning on Boise, Id I-84. All lanes were running at about 55 mph. Temps were in the single digits, so could be they had just not warmed up yet.
Posted By: StoneCutter Re: Left Lane Campers - 01/16/24
It's a very simple to understand state law here with signs on both sides of the road every couple of miles, but they're still clueless and continue to block the left lane. Actually, I think that they're just clueless to their surroundings when they have someone riding their ass all of the way up the road. Most of these people have no idea that they're blocking traffic.

The signs read.....

State Law
Slower Traffic
Keep Right

The problem is that Americans don't read signs. They need to put the signs up in Spanish also. Half the perpetrators are Hispanic and they do read signs (in Spanish). That would take care of half the offenders. The Americans would then see the signs in Spanish and wonder what they say. So the next batch of signs in English they might read it and learn something new that day.

Worse are the ones that come screaming up behind you, so you change lanes and just as they catch up to you they slow down and match your speed, so you have to brake for the slow cars in front of you.

I turn my cruise off unless I’m on open road.
If a car ahead of changes lanes ahead of me, meaning getting out of my lane into another one, my truck applies the brakes. It fuggin sucks.

Just now reading some of the thread for the first time but didn't read all the posts. When I'm running along our I49 interstate which I try to avoid because I rather drive on the slow roads I usually go about 73 in the 75 MPH zone. I'll come upon a truck that is going slightly slower than me so I get in the left lane and bump it up to about 76 or 77 and it takes awhile to get ahead of him and then return to the right lane if there isn't another truck right ahead of him that I need to pass also.

Now, what is the problem? I'm over the speed limit but invariably someone going about 85 or 90 or more (which is illegal) shows up behind me passing and wants to be frustrated. What is up with all this fast driving and feeling entitled to break the speed limit to the tune of 10 or 15 MPH or more?

The speed limits are there for a reason and we have an obligation to not unnecessarily endanger others (except pedal bikes of course).

I try to stay in the right lane if I am not turning left anytime soon, but what pisses me off is when I stay right up until it is time to pass someone, only to have someone else hauling ass up behind me, getting into the left lane to pass us both.

I then have to either move left, cut that person off and make him slow down, or slow down myself, wait for him to pass us both, then I get over and pass the initial vehicle I came upon.

Who is to say what distance is or is not too far away from a slower vehicle, to get into the left lane to pass?

Seems so easy to pull over and let someone go by and it takes much less room to pull over than it does to pass someone on the right.

Posted By: Mannlicher Re: Left Lane Campers - 01/17/24
under normal conditions and with the traffic flow unimpeded, folks tend to ride along in packs. Groups of cars running about the same speed. When I see them coming up behind me, I will slow to 65 and let them all go around. Then I match their speed, maybe a mile per hour less, and I can ride for miles alone. Next pack coming I just repeat that.
FL Turnpike, I-95 and I-75 are as bad as any in America.

Don't be in such a hurry, leave out on time. If someone is going a mile or two over the speed limit in the left lane and they are overtaking a semi-truck going a mile or two under the speed limit it is going to take a while. High speed and high blood pressure kills.

The thing about people driving fast in the left lane is, when they come up behind, you have no idea why they're in such a hurry. Is it a first-time father with a wife about to give birth, driving her to the hospital? Is it a family member rushing to the bedside of a relative who's dying?

If so, maybe "GFY and pass me on the right if you dare (which is illegal in some states)" is not the best answer.

Sam goes for people driving too slow for your tastes. If it's a 90 year-old woman driving to get her meds at the drugstore because she has no one to help her out, cut her some slack.

Perhaps I'm wrong but I don't see this thread about anyone wanting to go 90+mph, although on I45 that's about the norm for cars and trucks alike and it's posted 75. I don't but dayum is it too much to ask for people to drive courteously and keep out of the passing lane? I've witnessed trucks commanding the passing lane to lumber around another truck for ten miles. I have no choice but to drive home on a two lane highway with no shoulder posted at 70mph. Many people drive 50-60 and there are few passing lanes lined along the way. I've been passed before by someone that stopped to turn right on a road in front of me. I wouldn't do that to anyone else but some people sure have no problem doing it to me and it does sorta grate on the nerve. There's nothing you cna do about it except shake your head and wonder what kind of fool it is. Sometimes the guy in front happily going 60 suddenly speeds up to 75 or 80 on a straight passing zone only to slow down after passing it to keep me from passing. That's downright insane. A lot of things some people do are down right malicious if not dangerous. Driving your car or Pu on an east Texas road through forested areas at dusk without any lights on is dangerous. I can't figure our whether they just forget, don't care or think they're saving electricity but they're damned near invisible. That can get you and someone else killed.
Posted By: 240NMC Re: Left Lane Campers - 01/17/24
The law as written is that you yield to the faster traffic in the left lane and move over to let them pass. There are no clarifications that say if you are over the speed limit you can stay camped in the left lane and others can just deal with it. I (we) (you) are not the regulators of speed and if someone is speeding, there are plenty of ways to deal with it. Entitlement does not equal driving in the left lane…

I always enjoy driving in Germany where the rules are the rules and there is little discretion as to how they are applied. We have cars going 175mph in unlimited speed sections next to cars going 60 mph. Trucks are limited to 62 mph (100kmh) and restricted to the left lane unless passing a slower car. When a car or truck in the right lane signals to pass, the faster car in the left lane has to yield and let them pass. That is unless the faster car is too close to slow down. Most drivers in the left lane will signal with their left turn signal when they see you signal that you are pulling into their lane to let you know they see you. Also flashing headlights on the faster car when a car is ready to move into the left lane is not a middle finger but it lets the slower car know they are coming fast. the cameras will ticket you for following too close and for not moving over. The speed limit is the speed limit so you follow it. They also have variable speed limits that change depending on traffic volume. If we had that here and better trained drivers, we’d like it and be able to drive faster…. No way in hell it will ever happen here!

My time is more important to me than anyone else's.
When I was younger I had the mindset that if you started out behind me, you were going to stay behind me. Not sure why but grew out of that. Now I just hate sharing my world with people. All lanes blocked and ill go around on the shoulder. Not wasting my life sitting in a vehicle trying to get A to B.
Posted By: Heym06 Re: Left Lane Campers - 01/17/24
So we have a left lane for speeders, and the other lanes are for those that go the speed limit. Kinda like the left and the right in politics. Left does what they want and feel entitled to that. And the right plugs away trying to do the right thing. My two cents.

He got pissed at me when I asked why old people should get automatic respect in another thread. ie, "respect your elders." He said I'm what's wrong with the world but just showed a prime example of why its stupid to automatically assume old people are worthy of respect.

To their credit, those drivers doing triple digits and slaloming between all the other cars almost always give their turn signal. I appreciate their attempt to be safe, legal and courteous.

So I’m driving in the left lane at 70 mph passing a truck in the right lane. And you come up behind me honking and flashing lights (and giving me the finger), wanting me to go faster. Hmm, the speed limit is just that and applies to both lane. So your wife s in the car and having a baby, try telling that to the trooper who pulls you over for reckless driving. Or you’re just careless and don’t care about my safety or for that matter about the safety of your kids or grandchildren in the car with you. Why not, why don’t you care.

Yes I’m a disabled vet, a conservative and a republican. Yes your name calling and poop throwing reflects in you.

Laffin…. You must be kidding. I’ve driven that stretch several times, and it doesn’t hold a candle to I-85 between Charlotte and Atlanta. Not even close. That stretch can be absolute traffic misery.

I haven't driven between Atlanta and Charlotte since January 1986 when I finished my MBA internship with Burroughs Computer, back when they were the go to technology provider for the banking industry and were trying, unsuccessfully, to compete with IBM in the PC market.

The off road version of this drives me mad. Cruising down a dirt road, come up at a decent clip behind some guy doing 20. He knows you're there, eating his dust, and he won't pull over to let you pass.

If you're truly concerned for your safety, you should get off the highway and drive 5mph on a back road.

When I pass a semi I always proceed a good way ahead before moving back over. I don't believe the typical driver has a good grasp on what it takes for a semi to stop.

I drive like 90% of the drivers on interstates. Traffic in the right lane is usually moving about 75 mph. I drive in the right lane doing about 75. When I come up on slower cars I move over and pass them. Then I get back in the right lane and carry on.

Many times there will be a string of cars in the left lane doing 80 to 85. None of my business. Sometimes I'll move over there and drive along with them at that speed for a while if the situation allows it.

If I am trying to get somewhere in a hurry, most won't pass me! Usually I don't have any reason to hurry, I drive the traffic speed in the right lane. Bigger problem than lane choice, is tailgating, and not using and acknowledging others signals! Easy stuff!!

What's the problem? I am driving 2 or 3 MPH under the speed limit. I overtake a vehicle slightly slower than me. I kick it up to 1 or 2 MPH over the speed limit so as to get around him and not put myself in danger of a citation for speeding or worse a high speed crash. It takes a few minutes to get around especially if there are 2 tractor trailer rigs to get around. If I'm going over the limit by 2 or 3 MPH you are going fast enough.

I made my living in the middle of the highway/interstate. You aren’t the only one who has seen things.

And I also more over to let the really fast speeders get on their way. Let them attract the attention of any cop sitting in the median.

Yep, let 'em pass and then fall in behind at a safe distance. Radar screens.

Thank you for recognizing this sacrifice as few have ever done so. Your mother must be somewhat disappointed with her sacrifice. Thanks anyhow.

Well for sure, your not concerned for your own safety

I worked for several years out of Walton, Kentucky while living on the north side of Cincinnati. I had a considerable commute, and often had to visit warehouses around the 275 loop going and coming. My coworkers talked about the Buckeye Block. That is, a guy with Ohio Plates playing wingman to a vehicle and riding the left lane. It was a real thing. It was remarkably different than the decade or more I had on I-75 commuting to Dayton and back.

The problem arises from Kentucky residents being comfortable driving pretty fast in the fast lane. Ohio Residents tend to be more conservative and are very slow to pass vehicles. As a result, you can get two vehicles really jamming things up with a trail of increasingly irate Kentucky drivers strung out behind.

Yes, it is a real thing. Me? I'm kind of a "When in Rome. . . " kind of guy. My general habit was to let the faster drivers blow on by and let them shake the trees while I laid back a mile or two back and raked the leaves. I drive the AA highway a lot now and tend to stay in the left lane, passing slower traffic, but keep an eye out in the rearview for anyone who wants to pass. There are more than enough Harvey Wallbangers who want to do 80 in a 55 and I'm not going to get in their way.

It's interesting how the morally superior claim that they're following the law by doing the speed limit in the left lane.

There's also a law that says get the [bleep] outta the way.

Try obeying both.
