I was talking to a National Parks Service archeologist just this morning.
According to him part of the reason for relocating the five San Antonio Missions here in the first half of the 18th Century was the local pre-existing abundance of feral cattle and feral pigs.

According to the journal of Governor Alonzo de Leon the only thing to prosper out of the abandoned French post on Garcitas creek (Ft. St. Louis) were the settler’s hogs. Upon his arrival at the site in 1690 he stated the pigs were everywhere!
